JOHN ALBERT SWINDELL, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
HEATING-FURNACE.
rooacii.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN ALBERT SWIN- nnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heating- Furnaces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a horizontal section of a heating furnace embodying my invention, the various fines being shown in dotted lines; and Figs. 2 and 3 are sections on the lines 11-11 and IIIIII respectively of Fig. 1.
My invention has relation to heating furnaces, for heating billets, blooms, ingots, etc., and is designed to provide a furnace of this character having means for preheating the billets or blooms to any desired degree before they are delivered into the main heating chamber.
The nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which I have shown a preferred embodiment thereof, it being premised, however, that my invention is applicable to other types of furnaces than the particular furnace shown, and that the details of construction and arrangement may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
In these drawings, the numeral 2 designates the main heating chamber of a heating furnace. This furnace is shown as being of the reversing regenerative type, although my invention is not limited thereto.
In accordance with my invention, I provide the furnace at one side with an extension 3, which incloses a preheating chamber 4:. This preheating chamber has its floor 5 at substantially the same horizontal level as the floor 6 of the main heating chamber 2, the chamber 4 being open at its inner end where it communicates with the chamber 2.
7 designates suitable doors in the side walls of the extension, and 8 are other doors in the outer end wall thereof.
Formed below the chamber 4: is a transverse flue 9, which communicates with opposite sides of the chamber 4 at the outer corner portions thereof by means of the vertical flues 10. The flue 9 has a stack flue connection 11, which preferably communicates with the regular stack fine 12 below Specification of Letters Patent.

the furnace reversing valves 13. The flue connection 11 is provided with a suitable regulating damper 11 By properly adj usting this damper 11 any desired amount of the products of combustion may be drawn off from the chamber 2- and into and through the preheating chamber at.
The billets, blooms, or other metal articles to be heated are introduced into the chamber 4. where they are preheated to the desired degree before being moved into the main heating chamber 2. In this manner the blooms or billets may be gradually brought up to the desired heat. In the construction as shown, the blooms or billets are moved in the chamber 4, and from the chamber at into the main chamber 2, manually by means of suitable bars introduced through the door openings at 7 and 8. It will be understood, however, that I may employ any suitable feeding means in connection with my improved furnace, the latter, however, forming no part of my present invention.
My invention enables the main heating chamber of the furnace to be kept at an approximately uniform working heat. The preheating being done in the auxiliary chamber, it is unnecessary to slow down the main chamber during the preliminary heating. This enables the furnace to be worked much more economically. My improved furnace is also especially adapted to heating special steels, such as high-alloy or other steels which require to be heated slowly during the initial portion of the heating operation.
My invention is applicable to various types of furnaces in which the products of combustion pass through the main heating chamber at substantially right angles to the movement of the billets therethrough.
What I claim is 1. A blank heating furnace comprising a main heating chamber, flues for causing a heat circulation longitudinally of said chamber from end to end in either direction, said fines having connection with a stack, a preheating chamber oflset laterally from the main heating chamber at one side thereof, said preheating chamber being open at its inner side for at least the major portion of the width of the chamber, and for a distance greater than the length of the blank to be heated, said preliminary heat ing chamber having a controllable flue leading therefrom to the said stack, and forming means whereby a positively controlled heat circulation may be obtained from the main chamber through the preheating chamber; substantially as described.
A blank heating furnace comprising a main heating chamber, reversible regenerator connections communicating with opposite ends of said main chamber and forming means for-causing a heat circulation longitudinally in either direction, a stack with which the said connections are to communicate, a preheating chamber offset laterally from the main heating chamber at one side thereof, said preliminary chamber being open to the main heating chamber at its in ner end for at least the major portion of the width of the preliminary chamber and for a distance greater than the length of the blanks to be heated, said preliminary heating chamber having a controllable flue leading therefrom to the said stack, and forming means whereby a positively controlled heat circulation may be obtained from the main chamber through the preheating chamber; substantially as described.
3. A blank heating furnace comprising a main heating chamber, means for causing a heat circulation longitudinally of said chamber in either direction, a preheating chamber ofii'set laterally from the main chamber and communicating therewith at its inner end, said preheating chamber having an olftake fine at each of its outer corner portions, said olftake fines being connected to the stack which provides for the draft through the main heating chamber; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
