Be it known that we, MArHUs O. KEITH and KING D. MCQUEEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention comprehends improvements in hat fasteners and relates more particularly to those especially adapted for firmly securing womens hats upon their heads.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature including a member fixed to the hat and a hair engaging member adapted to removably engage said first mentioned member.

\Vith these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in cer-. tain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of our invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which,

Figure 1 is a sectional view through a fastener constructed in accordance with our invention, showing the hair engaging member out of locking engagement with the member carried upon the hat, Fig. 2 is a top plan view, Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation, and, Fig. 4: is a fragmentary sectional view partly in elevation, showing the two members locked.

In the following description and accompanying drawings, similar parts will be referred to and designated by like reference characters.

Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates an adjustable band adapted to be secured within a hat by means of suitable fasteners, such as are indicated by the numeral 6. The band is formed with two pairs of depending arms 7, the arms of each pair being spaced from each other and extending from diametrically opposite points of the band 5 with respect to the corresponding arms of the other pair. The arms are bent upwardly at their extremities to provide the spring locking tongues 8. It will be noted upon reference to Fig. 1, that the arms 7 extend downwardly and outwardly and that the tongues 8 extend up- Specification of Letters Patent.

wardly at an acute angle to the outer faces of said arms.

9 designates, generally, a hair engaging member fashioned somewhat after the shape of the customary side comb and comprising the teeth or prongs 10 and base 11. A spring 12 preferably formed integral with the base 11, is extended upwardly from the lower edge thereof, forming a pocket 13. An inwardly facing housing 14, which is U-shaped in cross section is formed upon the free edge of the spring 12 and extends the entire length thereof. A locking bar 15 having its end portions inturned, as at 16, is secured at its extremities to the outer face of the base 11. As shown in Fig. 2, the locking bar 15 extends the full length of the base 11 and has its central portion spaced some distance therefrom. Two of these hair engaging members are employed so that the hat to which the band 5 is secured, may be firmly retained in proper position upon the head of the wearer. To thus secure a hat, the hair engaging members 9 are first run through the hair upon opposite sides of the head. hen they have been placed in the proper position. the hat is placed. upon the head, causing the spring locking tongues 8 to enter the pockets 13 and engage under the bars 15. Fig. 1 shows the relative positions of the members when the device is in use and it will be noted that the housing 14 is always in engagement with the bar 15 and that the spring tongues 8 contact with the inner sides of the springs 12. When it is desired to remove the hat, the hair engaging members are grasped and the springs and housings 14 carried thereon, are forced inwardly so as to throw the spring tongues out of engagement with the bars 15, after which the hair engaging members may be taken from the hair and then the hat removed or the hat removed first.

We have shown each of the hair engaging members and their connected parts formed integral, but it is to be understood that this is only the preferred construction and may be departed from if desired. Other changes in the construction of the hair engaging ed to be secured to a hat, a depending arm secured to said band and having an upwardly facing spring tongue formed upon its extremity, a hair engaging member, means carried by said member for positive engagementwith the extremity of the tongue, whereby said hair engaging member will be locked to the band, and means for disengaging the spring tongue from said first mentioned means.

2. .i-r hat fastener including a band adapted to be secured in a hat, a plurality of de pending arms secured to said band, upwardly facing spring tongues carried upon the outer sides of said arms, a hair engaging member, a bar carried by said hair engaging member for positive engagement with the extremities of said spring tongues, and means acting on the tongues to release the latter from engagement with the bar.

A fastener of the character described, including a band adapted to be secured within a hat, a plurality of depending arms secured to said band, a plurality of upwardly facing spring tongues secured to the extremities of said arms, a hair engaging member, a locking bar secured to said hair engaging member and having its central portion spaced therefrom, an upwardly extending sprin continuing from the lower edge of the hair engaging member, and a housing formed upon the free edge of said spring to receive the locking bar, the spring tongues being adapted for enagement under said bar whereby the two members are locked together and the spring and hous ing providing means for disengaging the tongues from the bar to permit the removal of the hat.
