Application filed January 2, 1914. Serial No. 809,810.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT Wroxs, a States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Electric Irons; and I h reby declare the following to be a full, cear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in electric irons. The object of my invention is to provide new and improved means for supporting the terminals of the heating coil so that the said terminals will 'not become heated when the iron is in use. With this object in view my invention consists in certain new and improved features of construction and combination and arrangement of' parts hereinafter described m the specifications, particularly pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings. L
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a view in elevation of an iron embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4: is a section on line 4.-4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on line 55, Fig.4
'The body of the iron comprises a base which carries a post 11 having a screw threaded socket-12. Around the edge of the base is formed a seat 15. The heating element comprises a porcelain member 16 which has an opening 17 for the passage of the post 11, and on its upper surface is provided with a groove 19 and a doublerow of ribs'20. The heatin wire shown at 22 is interlaced between tEe ribs and the ends thereof are brought to' the back or heel of the base. A layer of cement is placed 'on'the member 16 over the wire 22. A cover 23 ion the base over the; heating element. On
havinga seat 25 in its top is arranged top of the cover 23 is-mounted a U-shaped handle supporting member 26 comprising a bottom portion adapted tolfit into the seat and are adapted .usual type of plug 'within said extending standards piece 28; A screw. 27 v the bottom portion of the handle supporting member and through the cover 23 and is adapted to screw into the socket 12 in the post 11.
To the rear standard of the handle supporting member of the iron at the heel of the iron is secured a bracket 29 and on-this bracket are" mounted two terminal forming pins 30, and each pinis connected by. a conductpr 31 with one of the ends of the heating wire 22. The pins are of the usual type for forming terminals on electric irons to be received into the (not shown) which carries the terminals of an electric circuit. By supporting the said pins from the handle of the iron it is possible to prevent the pins becoming heated'as is now the case where the said pins are mounted directly "on the body of the iron. It is well known that when the pins become overheated they cause the wires 25 and two upwardly which carry the grip extends down throng connected to the plug to become brittle and when any strain is put on the wires they readily break and also the 'overh'eatin of the terminal pins causes a corroding o the pins which establish a resistance in the plug and prevents the electric current from heating the heating unit in the iron. On-the shell 23 is mounted a guard member 35, which extends around the pins 30 and serves to protect the conductors 31.
What I claim is: I
1. An electric laundry iron comprising a body portion, an electric heating element an ranged within said body portion and having the terminals thereof extending through said body portion, a standard mounted on said body portion, a bracket secured to said the lower portions of standard and spaced above said body portion', terminal pins carried by said bracket and means, connecting the terminals of the heating element wlth said terminal pins on said bracket.
2. An electric laundry iron comprising a baseplate, a cover arranged on said base plate, an electric heating element arranged cover and having the terminals thereof extending up through said cover, a In testimony whereof, I sign the foregohandle supporting-member mounted on said in'g specification, in the presence of two witcover, a bracket secured to said handle supnesses.
porting member and spaced above said HERBERT WICKS' 5 cover, terminal pins carried by said bracket, Witnesses:
and means connecting the terminals of the VICTOR C. LYNCH,-
heating element with said terminal pins. B. 0. BROWN.
