The loose dog 20 has a working surface that is roundedin the direction of the lengths of the dog as indicated at 21 in Figs. 8 and 9. The purpose of this rounding of the dog is to aii'ord a minimum area of contact between its rounded surface and the teeth of the escape wheel and to facilitate the disengagement of the dog from the teeth. The ordinary back check stop 22 acting on the escape Wheel is shown in Figs, 6 and 7. .lt

The rear end of plate 42 has a right angle lug 47 tap/pcd to receive a screw bolt 48 whose front end bears'against escapement rocker. This is to aid in the accurate adjustment of plate 42 in the rocker.
' Fig. 13 shows the spacing devices. There is the usual space bar 45 located at Vthe front of the key-board and from' it extend rearwardly side arm-s or bars 4G, 46, having in their rear ends concentric pivot bearings 47, 47, adapted to receive a transverse bearing rod which may be the same rod 48 as that upon which the key levers 31 are pivoted. yIn front ofr the bearing 48, the side arms 46 of the base bar are connected by a transverse rod 49 seated in. slots in the under edges of the arms 46 and held up by clips 50 having slots embracing the flattened ends of the rod'49 and secured by nuts 52 applied to the threaded ends of the rod. Instead of flattening the ends of the rods 49 and forming slots 51 in the. clips, the latter may have circular apertures as in Fig. 17 and the ends of the rod be circular. At or about the central part of the transverse rod 49 is adjustably secured an upright 53 adapted to engage the pin 37 on the side \of the escapement actuating rod when the space bar is depressed.
The carriage shift devices indicated in Fig. 16 are familiar or will be readily understood by those skilled in thisfart and specific reference thereto seems unnecessary.
One o'f the purposes of adjusting the. escapement wheelback check 22 is to permit the escape wheel to take different positions according to the desired drop from the limber to the rigid dog. The rounding ot' employed in the rounding the working face of the limbcr dog, however, it always presents a rounded ,face to the teeth of the escape w'hecl whatever may be the adjustment with respect to dro and whatever such adjustment may be t ie round surface of the dog is engaged by the HatI faces of the teeth of the escape wheel and not by.the corner or edge there` of. The drawings show a special form of under eut teeth designed toail'ord clearance where an extreme drop is employed and also on the forward motion of the escapement dog.
I claim:
l. Typewritingmachine escapement mechanism comprising a toothed escape wheel and a cooperatingl loose dog movable transversely to the plane of the wheel in and out between its teeth and 4having its working face rounded in the direction of its length and of the length of the teeth.
2. Typewriting machine mechanism comprising an escape wheel shaft, an .escape wheel fast thereon, a sleeve turning loosely on the shaft and having two ratchet wheels, a feed rack with which one of the wheels engages, a locking pawl connecting the other ratchet and the escape wheel for rotationl together in one direction only, ball bearings applied to the ends of the shaft respectively outside o'f the escape wheel and the ratchet engaging the feed rack.
3. Typewriting,r machine escapement mechanism comprising an escape wheel shaft and an escape wheel fast thereon, :i ratchet, means for connecting the ratchet and escape wheel for rotation together' in one direction only; a second ratchet rotating in either direction with the first one, a feed rack with which the latter ratchet wheel engages, ball races at the respective ends of the shaft composed ol` stationary parts and conical plugs applied to the ends of the escape wheel s a t 4. Typewriting machine escapementmechanisrn comprising an escape wheel shaft having a tapered end and a head driven thereon and adapted to form one member ot a ball racc, and a head onthe other end of the shaft adapted to form one member of another ball race.
5. Typewriting machine cscapementmechanism comprisingr standards' in one of which is fitted an adjustable screw plug, the inner end of which forms one'mernber of a 4ball race and in the other of which 'is formed one member of another ball race, an escape wheel shaft having at its' respective ends heads constituting the other members of the respective ball races, and located between said heads, an escapewheel fast on the shaft, a sleeve having two'ratchets with one of which the escape Wheel is locked for rotation in one direction only and the other of which engages the feed rack of the machine.
6. Typewriting machine escapement mechanisin comprising an escape wheel shaft, an escape wheel fast thereon, fast and loose escapement dogs coperating with the wheel and an adjustable back stop pivoted upon an adjustable eccentric bolt.
7. Typewriting machine escapement mechanism comprising aspace bar, side arms thereof rocking about an axis at their rear ends, a transverse shaft seated in jaws in the side arms in front of their pivot, clips connecting the side arms and transverse shaft and clamp nut-s for rigidly uniting them, and an arm extending from the transverseshaft and adapted to operate the escapeinent devices of the machine.
8. Escapement mechanism for a writing machine, comprising an escapement rocker, a plate adjustably clamped in the lower end thereof, an operating rod pivoted to the plate and a gage screw turning in the rear end of the plate and bearing against the rocker.
9. Escapement mechanism comprising an escape wheel shaft tapered at one end, having an integral head at the other end and ascrew head contiguous the head, an escape Wheel screwed upon said thread, and a separately formed apertured head itting 'the taperedend of the shaft and secured thereon by pressure.
