Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 18, 1912. Serial No. 704,320.
1 '0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR E. HAUCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State. of New York, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burners, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to oil burners, and has particular reference to burners for burning tar, heavy oils, etc., wherein both the air and the oil for combustion are preheated before the oil reaches the point of combustion.
The invention comprises the general organization of such a burner, together with various improvements in details of construction and arrangement of elements which will more fully appear in connection with the description of theaccompanying drawin'gs, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation partly in section of a burner embodying the invention; and Fig. 2 is a transverse view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. 1 represents an. oil supply pipe passing through a preheating chamber 2 and containing a needle valve 3 to control the flow,
the oil preferably being supplied under pressure. The pipe 1 is connected to a mixer 1 which consists of a casing having a connection for the oil pipe 1 and also for an air supply pipe 5 which leads from the prehcater tube, the air and oil pipes leading to a common mixing chamber 6 having a nozzle 7 which discharges into a longitudinally movable funnel 8.- The tunnel 8 is externally screw-threaded and screws into the end of the combustion chamber 11. 9, 9 comprise the segments of a divided secondary funnel, each of which is pivotally mounted at 10 on the shell of the combustion chamber 11. The
handles which support the segments 9 pass through slots in the shell. By securing the funnel 8 longitudinally relatively to the shell, it will be seen thatthe segments 9 will be more or less spread and thereby the admission of air through the slots 12 regulated.

By preheating the heavy oil with air outside the burner, and in advance of the point at which the oil passes through the oil controlling valve, the valve seat does not become clogged with carbon, tar or viscous ingredients of the oil, and a more regular and This is especially the adjustable guiding funnel 9, formed of two or more pieces which not only regulate the air sucked in for combustion, but also control the shape of the flame.

Having thus described my invention, I declare that what I claim asnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a heavy Oll burner, the combination with a combustion chamber and a mixing device for projecting a blast of air and oil therein, otmeans for regulatmg the amount at. the opposite end, of a mixing device ad j acent said funnel, an adjustable air regulating cone between said mixing device and said combustion chamber, an air'conduit between said air acket and sa1d mixing device, an oil conduit connected to said mix ing device and passing through a portion of said air conduit, said air conduit having a v by-pass about said portion of said air conduit, an oil regulating means in said oilconduit located between said mixing device and said air conduit, and a valve for controlling the flow of the heated air either directly through said by-pass to said mixing device or indirectly thereto around said oil conduit.
3. An oilburner comprising a hollow combustion chamber having a gas inlet at one end and a flame outlet at the opposite end, a multiple part funnel within said chamber adjacent said inlet, means for adjusting the parts of said funnel to regulate the admission of air to said combustion chamber, said means being concentric with said inlet opening and movable longitudinall thereof to expand and contract said funne and a fuel nozzle adjacent said inlet.
