WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters ratent.
Patented Apr. 7, 1914..
To all whom it may concern:
zen of the United States,'residing at Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Claire and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Washing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to clothes washing machines, and the object is to provide a cheap and simple yet eflicient washing device of such construction that it may be used in combination with any ordinary wash-tub.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of a wash tub shown as on a plain wash bench and having my washing device applied to it. Fig.
- 2 is a top or plan view of what is shown in Fig. 1 with the bench omitted, Fig. 3 is a rear portion of Fig. 1 modified. Fig. 4 is a further modification or application on a reduced scale of what is shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 1 designates the top portion of an ordinary wash bench by which a cylindrical Wash tub 2 is supported as is usual in washing clothes. Upon the rear edge of the tub is detachably secured by a screw 3 a clamp 4, having asocket 5, in which a vertical standard 6 is journaled and provided with one above and the other below the socket and provided with a set screw 9, whereby the standard is made adjustable as to its height.
Parallel with the rear standard 6 is a front standard 6 which is fixed to the rear standard by a horizontal bar- 6 in the present presentation the parts 6, 6 and 6 are made integral, but it is obvious that they may also be made up of two or three pieces mechanically secured together. The front standard 6 is supposed to be arranged over the middle of the wash tub, and upon it is slidably retained by a collar 10 a spider 11, whose four arms 12 have their outer ends directed downward and fixed in the small ends of four inverted funnel-shaped plungers 13. Said spider 11 is suspended by two links 14 from a hand lever 15 having a slot 16 embracing the standard 6* while the rear end of the lever is pivoted at 17. to a supporting block 18, which by a set screw 19dis adjustably secured on the rear standar 6.
In the operation of the device the clothes andsuds are placed in the tub and the lever 15 worked up and down by the hands until the clothes are washed, when the plungers are lifted above the tub and swung sidewise out of the way for handling of the clothes; during such swinging movement the rear standard turns in the socket 5.
If the tub is an extra deep or extra shallow one, the rear standard may be adjusted upward or downward by the screws 9 and collars 7 and 8. And if the tub is of an extra small diameter so that the front standard will not come centrally over the tub, then I furnish with each machine a bracket 20, and screws 21, by which the bracket is secured to the bench as shown in the modification in Fig. 3, and the bracket i is secured to said bench bracket as there shown. And if the size of the tub is all right, but the tub is of extra thin material, or is otherwise weak, then said bench bracketmay be applied as shown in Fig. 4, where the tub is moved close to the bracket and the clamping part of bracket 4 is secured over the tub and the upper arm of the bench bracket. In said Fig. 4; it will be noted that the bracket is the very same one as in Fig. 3, but the tub is placed against the rear side of the bracket so as to be reinforcedby clamping it and the bracket 20 together.
In the action of the machine the plungers when descending cause most of the air contained in them to escape with force into the clothes so as to coact with the water in loosening and removing the dirt. And as the plungers are quickly raised they cause an agitating suction on the clothes and the suds which also has a cleansing effect on the clothes. Said double effect of the plungers is attained by, giving them no springs, valves, or other outlets or inlets than the downward turned hollow funnel-shaped bodies. Speedy washing also results from the use of several plungers acting simultaneously so that the clothes can not escape to other parts of the tub, but are all under washing action'during each stroke of the lever.
What I claim is The combination with a wash tub, of a frame securable to the tub and having a vertical standard suspended over the tub substantially above its center, a spider slid- Q I 1,092,1eo
able on the standard and having a plurality and removable means retaining the spider of radial arms, dashers fixedone to each on the standard. a 10 arm, a hand lever having a slot straddling In testimony whereof I afix my signature, the standard and having one end pivoted to in presence of two witnesses.
the frame and the other end extended be- EDWIN CRALL. yond the tub and adapted to be used as an Witnesses: operating handle, and links connecting said H. H. GADSBY,
hand lever with the spider, and adjustable JAMES 0014mm.
