I eo mmamma assent-e T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, FERDINAND L. HOLLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to collar retaining means and is intended for use in the back of a shirt band to prevent the rear of the collar from riding up and also to prevent the rear of the collar from causing the ill "feeling common to the use of collar buttons at this place. An object of this invention is to provide a device which when placed in the back of a shirt band will neither become misplaced when removing the collar nor hurt the back of the neck of the wearer. I
A further object of this invention is to provide a device which is insertible in the pocket formed in the rear of a collar band of a shirtand which may be securely held therein, which device has a fiat tongue intended to pass through the button-hole with-- out injuring the same.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a depending tongue positioned in the collar band of a shirt to receive the button-hole in the rear of a collar and to securely hold the same in place but to provide easy removal of the collar when so desired without injury tothe button-hole thereof.
Further objects will be apparent from the following specification, appended claims and drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a por tion of a collar band of a shirt showing the invention applied thereto, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device showing its relation to the collar band by dottedlines, and, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through a collar hand and collar showing how the device is applied.
This invention is intended to serve a purpose which has heretofore been accomplished by collar buttons and by fastening means, which collar buttons have proven to. be annoying in that the base frequently exerts uncomfortable pressure on the hack of the neck, of the wearer and which collar buttons injure the button-hole of the shirt PATENT rr e I 'speemcauonni Letters Page Patfit v Application filed llovembeifl, 1912. - and the collar in tlie' application andlre- ,moval especiall'y'aftenthe shirt has been laundried, then, the flat" fasteliing means heretofore used have been so inserted in the neck band as to become displaced in the removal of the collar.
My invention is intended to be secured to the collar band so that it cannot become displaced in applying or removing a collar and referring more specifically to the drawings, there is shown a plate 10 which has the upper edge thereof straight with rounded ends. Stems 12 depend from the ends of the plate 10 as shown and are curved to present hooks l3 and a tongue 14: depends from the center of the lower edge of the plate 10 intermedi: ate of the stems 12 which tongue is offset as at 15. The plate 10 may be fiat or may be curved to conform with the curvature of a collar band and the hooks 13 may be bent to a more or less degree than shown as to meet the requirements.
- In applying the device the tongue 14.- and plate 10 are inverted and pass into the pocket formed between the collar band 16 and the leaf 17 so that the tongue 14 passes through the button-hole 18 when the device is turned to its natural position as shown in Fig. 1. of the drawings, then-the lower edge of the leaf 17 is arranged to pass under the hooks 18 so as to lock the device against accidental misplacement. The straight edge 11 also serves to hold the device in the proper.position as it fits snugly in the junction of the leaf 17 with the collar band 16.
In applying .the collar the stand 19- is positioned so that the button-hole 20 receives the tongue 14 when the collar may .be swung to fasten the ends in the front of the neck; Y This device may be made as by stamping to producea form shown in the drawing or a it may be made of wire bent to the shape to produce the several parts called for in the specification Furthermore, this device is practically locked to the leaf of a collar band when properly applied so that accidental raising of the tongue 14- would not permit the displacement of the fastener.
Having thus described In Y invention, 1 claim:
1. A collar fastening means comprising a plate having a straight upper edge,.stehis depending from the ends of the lower said stems being curved in a plane coin-" on to said plate, an offset tongue depending from the ceiitral lower portion of said plate, said stem'serving to hold the collar to a collar band and said curved stems locking lane common to the plate to present a 1100 c to engage the lower edge of a portion of the collar band and the middle stem being bent from, and downwardly from. said base through. the button hole in the collar band.
' ,In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FERDINAND L. HOLLY.
