Definitions
- Figure 1 is an elevation of a. portion of the mechanism of a time-recorder embodying my invention.
- Fig. 2 is a section on line AA, Fig. 1, parts being shown in dotted lines.
- Fig. 3 is a plan of parts seen in Fig. 1.
- Fig. 4 is a detached view, partly in section, of parts seen in Fig. 1.
- Fig. 5 is a section on line B-B, Fig. 4.
- My recording machine comprises generally a printing element and a record-sheet supporting-element.
- one of these elements is shiftable laterally in one direction and the other is shiftable laterally in the opposite direction to determine the position of a record upon the record-sheet, and these elements in their shifting movement slide in reverse directions in parallel planes and relatively to substantially parallel guides carrying said elements. It is obvious. however, that the means for supporting and guiding said elements in their shifting movement may be more or less varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
- the record-sheet supporting-element is a drum 1 which receives the record-sheet upon its periphery and is slidably mounted on and revoluble with a hollow shaft 2 journaled in the main frame 3.
- An axially-movable shaft 4 extends longitudinally through the shaft 2 and is revoluble threwith, being connected to the hub 5 of the drum. 1 by a pin 6 (indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2) extending transversely through the shafts 4 and 2 and into the hub 5, and movable lengthwise of the shaft 2 in Specification of Letters Patent.
- the axially-movable shaft 4 is limited in successive axial positions indicated by lines 8, F 1g. 1, by any suitable mechanism, which forms no part of my present invention, one exemplification of said mechanism being shown in my pending application Sr. Nd 450,469, filed August 27, 1908.
- the shaft 4 is provided with a suitable operating member, as a handle 40, by which said shaft and the drum 1 can be rotated and moved axially.
- the printing element is illustrated as consisting of a type wheel 9 mounted on a revoluble shaft 10 arranged parallel to the shafts 2 and 4 and journaled in a suitable frame 11 which is pivoted at 12 to arms of the main frame 3 for permitting the printing element and its shaft 10 to move toward the periphery of the drum 1 to effect the printing.
- the printing element 9 is normally arranged in proximity to one side of the record-sheet supporting-surface of the drum 1, that is the portion of the record-sheet supporting-element coiiperating with the printing element during the printing of a. number of records side by side upon the record-sheet, and is movable from its.
- the shaft 10 is designed to be con nected to the minute shaft of a clock mechanism, and the wheel 9 is revoluble with the revolution of the wheel 9.
- the wheel 9 is provided with an eccentrically-arranged pin 18 which enters one of a series of peripheral notches 19 formed in the wheel 17 and thus advances said wheel 17 a single step upon each revolution of the wheel 9.
- the hub let is a sleeve detachable from the wheel 9, but if desired, said hub may be otherwise constructed.
- the means for shifting the drum 1 and the printing element 9 may obviously be of 1 any suitable form, size and construction. I
- lever 20 pivoted at 21 intermediate of its ends to the frame 3, and having one end connected to the shaft 4, and a link 22 extending in the same general direction as the axis of the printing element 9 and suitably connected to the printing element for moving the same axially, and also connected to the other end of the lever 20.
- the lever 20 is provided at one end with a fork 23 which engages the opposing walls of an annular peripheral groove 24 formed in the hub 5 of the drum 1, and the other end of the lever 20 is bifurcated.
- One end of the link 22 is interposed between a pair of ears provided upon the non-revoluble part 16 at one side of the axis of the wheel 9 and its hub 14 and is connected to said ears by a pivot 25 extending at substantially a right angle to the axis of the printing element 9.
- the opposite faces of said end of the link 22 and the opposing faces of the ears of the non-revoluble part 16 are flattened, are arranged substantially parallel to the axis of the printing element, are extended on opposite sides of the axis of the pivot 25 and are slidably engaged with each other.
- the other end of the link 22 is arranged between the bifurcations or branches of the lever 20, is provided with a lateral extension 26 also arranged between said branches, and is pivoted to said branches by a pivot 27 substantially parallel to the pivot 25, the opposing faces of the link 22 and its extension 26, and the inner faces of the branches of the bifurcated end of the lever 20 being flattened, extended unequal distances on opposite sides of the axis of the pivot 27 and slidably engaged with each other.
- the end of the link 22 pivoted to the non-revoluble part 16 is provided with an arm 28 arranged radially rela tively to the shaft 10 and having its end spaced apart from the pivot 25, and provided with flattened faces which are slidably engaged with the opposing flattened faces of cars 29 provided on the non-revoluble part 16 in proximity to the free end thereof.
- the arm 28 and the ears 29 may, however, be dispensed with.
- the described connections between the drum 1 and the printing element 9 cause said element to move axially in a direction opposite to that of the axial movement of the drum 1, and also hold the non-- revoluble part 16 and the link 22 from movement with the printing element about the axis of the shaft 10.
- the shaft et is rotated to bring the proper portion of the record-sheet upon the drum 1 to the printing point; said shaft is then moved axially thus shifting the drum 1 axially in one direction, whereupon the lever 20 and the link 22 force the printing element 9 axially in the opposite direction; the print ing is thereupon effected either by the hand lever 30, or any other suitable means for causing the opposing surfaces of the recordsheet receiving element and the printing ele ment to cooperate with each other; and thereafter the printing element is moved away from the drum 1 and the shaft 4 is reversely moved for returning said drum and printing element to their normal or initial position.
- the positioning of a record by moving the drum 1 and the printing element in opposite directions reduces to a minimum the amount of movement required of either of said parts without limiting the capacity of the recordsheet and thus decreases the strain, shock and wear upon the parts, and adds to the efficiency and durability of the time-recorder.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES E. TOMLINSON, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGN- MENTS, TO INTERNATIONAL TIME RECORDING COMPANY OF NEW YORK, O'F ENDICOTT, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
RECORDING-MACHINE.
Application filed November 27, 1908.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES E. TOMLIN- son, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Recording-Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to time recording machines, and particularly to means for determining the position of the records transversely of the record-sheet; and it consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this. invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a. portion of the mechanism of a time-recorder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line AA, Fig. 1, parts being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a plan of parts seen in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detached view, partly in section, of parts seen in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on line B-B, Fig. 4.
My recording machine comprises generally a printing element and a record-sheet supporting-element. Preferably one of these elements is shiftable laterally in one direction and the other is shiftable laterally in the opposite direction to determine the position of a record upon the record-sheet, and these elements in their shifting movement slide in reverse directions in parallel planes and relatively to substantially parallel guides carrying said elements. It is obvious. however, that the means for supporting and guiding said elements in their shifting movement may be more or less varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
As here illustrated, the record-sheet supporting-element is a drum 1 which receives the record-sheet upon its periphery and is slidably mounted on and revoluble with a hollow shaft 2 journaled in the main frame 3. An axially-movable shaft 4 extends longitudinally through the shaft 2 and is revoluble threwith, being connected to the hub 5 of the drum. 1 by a pin 6 (indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 2) extending transversely through the shafts 4 and 2 and into the hub 5, and movable lengthwise of the shaft 2 in Specification of Letters Patent.

a longitudinal slot 7 provided therein. The axially-movable shaft 4 is limited in successive axial positions indicated by lines 8, F 1g. 1, by any suitable mechanism, which forms no part of my present invention, one exemplification of said mechanism being shown in my pending application Sr. Nd 450,469, filed August 27, 1908. Preferably, the shaft 4 is provided with a suitable operating member, as a handle 40, by which said shaft and the drum 1 can be rotated and moved axially.
The printing element is illustrated as consisting of a type wheel 9 mounted on a revoluble shaft 10 arranged parallel to the shafts 2 and 4 and journaled in a suitable frame 11 which is pivoted at 12 to arms of the main frame 3 for permitting the printing element and its shaft 10 to move toward the periphery of the drum 1 to effect the printing. Preferably, the printing element 9 is normally arranged in proximity to one side of the record-sheet supporting-surface of the drum 1, that is the portion of the record-sheet supporting-element coiiperating with the printing element during the printing of a. number of records side by side upon the record-sheet, and is movable from its.
normal or initial position unequal distances to print said records, and is returned to said normal or initial position after determining the position of each record upon the recordsheet, or in other words, after the printing of each record.
in the illustrated construction of my invention the shaft 10 is designed to be con nected to the minute shaft of a clock mechanism, and the wheel 9 is revoluble with the revolution of the wheel 9. As here shown the wheel 9 is provided with an eccentrically-arranged pin 18 which enters one of a series of peripheral notches 19 formed in the wheel 17 and thus advances said wheel 17 a single step upon each revolution of the wheel 9. Preferably the hub let is a sleeve detachable from the wheel 9, but if desired, said hub may be otherwise constructed.
The means for shifting the drum 1 and the printing element 9 may obviously be of 1 any suitable form, size and construction. I
have, however, illustrated a particularly simple mechanism for this purpose comprising a lever 20 pivoted at 21 intermediate of its ends to the frame 3, and having one end connected to the shaft 4, and a link 22 extending in the same general direction as the axis of the printing element 9 and suitably connected to the printing element for moving the same axially, and also connected to the other end of the lever 20. As here shown the lever 20 is provided at one end with a fork 23 which engages the opposing walls of an annular peripheral groove 24 formed in the hub 5 of the drum 1, and the other end of the lever 20 is bifurcated. One end of the link 22 is interposed between a pair of ears provided upon the non-revoluble part 16 at one side of the axis of the wheel 9 and its hub 14 and is connected to said ears by a pivot 25 extending at substantially a right angle to the axis of the printing element 9. The opposite faces of said end of the link 22 and the opposing faces of the ears of the non-revoluble part 16 are flattened, are arranged substantially parallel to the axis of the printing element, are extended on opposite sides of the axis of the pivot 25 and are slidably engaged with each other. The other end of the link 22 is arranged between the bifurcations or branches of the lever 20, is provided with a lateral extension 26 also arranged between said branches, and is pivoted to said branches by a pivot 27 substantially parallel to the pivot 25, the opposing faces of the link 22 and its extension 26, and the inner faces of the branches of the bifurcated end of the lever 20 being flattened, extended unequal distances on opposite sides of the axis of the pivot 27 and slidably engaged with each other. Preferably, the end of the link 22 pivoted to the non-revoluble part 16 is provided with an arm 28 arranged radially rela tively to the shaft 10 and having its end spaced apart from the pivot 25, and provided with flattened faces which are slidably engaged with the opposing flattened faces of cars 29 provided on the non-revoluble part 16 in proximity to the free end thereof. The arm 28 and the ears 29 may, however, be dispensed with. The described connections between the drum 1 and the printing element 9 cause said element to move axially in a direction opposite to that of the axial movement of the drum 1, and also hold the non-- revoluble part 16 and the link 22 from movement with the printing element about the axis of the shaft 10.
Any suitable means may be provided for moving the shaft 10 and the printing element toward the drum 1, and I have here shown for such purpose a hand lever 30 pivoted to the main frame 3 and connected to the movable frame 11 by a link 31. A suitable'spring 82 may be utilized for moving said shaft 10 and the printing element away from the drum 1.
In the operation of my time-recording machine the shaft et is rotated to bring the proper portion of the record-sheet upon the drum 1 to the printing point; said shaft is then moved axially thus shifting the drum 1 axially in one direction, whereupon the lever 20 and the link 22 force the printing element 9 axially in the opposite direction; the print ing is thereupon effected either by the hand lever 30, or any other suitable means for causing the opposing surfaces of the recordsheet receiving element and the printing ele ment to cooperate with each other; and thereafter the printing element is moved away from the drum 1 and the shaft 4 is reversely moved for returning said drum and printing element to their normal or initial position.
It will be particularly noted that the positioning of a record by moving the drum 1 and the printing element in opposite directions reduces to a minimum the amount of movement required of either of said parts without limiting the capacity of the recordsheet and thus decreases the strain, shock and wear upon the parts, and adds to the efficiency and durability of the time-recorder.
