UNITED STATES P iallENT UFFICE.
WILIBUR N. MATEER, OF HEAENE, TEXAS.
BRIDLE-IBIT.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILBUR N. MATEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hearne, in the county of Robertson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bridle-Bits, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawm s.
This invention relates to certain improvements in bridle bits and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character adapted to be employed for med cinal purposes and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character of a novel and improved construction whereby suitable medicine may be conveniently and effectively acted upon by the salivary fluid of the animal and thereby permitting the application of certain medicines without in any way interfering with the usefulness of the animal.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the novel arrangement and combinations of the several parts of my improved device whereby the same is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a bridle bit constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a view in top plan of the device as disclosed in Fig. 1 with the rein rings shown in section; and Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig.1 with the upper closure plate removed.
As shown in the accompanying drawings, 1l denotes the outer bit sections having interposed therebetween the medicine cup 2 and it is to be observed that this cup 2 is of a flattened form whereby a greater area is provided for the contact of the tongue of the animal therewith and whereby any possible injury to such member is reduced to a minimum. It is also to be particularly observed that the engagement of the inner ends of the bit sections 1 with the medicine cup Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. August 23, 1913.

Serial No. 786,305.
2 is by medium of the swivels 3, preferably n the nature of universal joints as disclosed in the drawings, whereby it will be readily understood that such movement will be permitted the medicine cup 2 relatively to the sections 1 as to compensate for the movements of the tongue of the animal whereby the device may be employed with greater comfort to the animal.
As herein disclosed the medicine cup 2 comprises the ring like member e having the diametrically opposed extensions 2 to which the swivel connections 3 hereinbefore referred to is made. The opposite faces of the ring like member t are closed by the perforated or reticulated plates 5 removably secured to the opposite faces of the ring like member 4 preferably by the screw 6whereby either of such plates 5 may be conveniently removed for the purpose of inserting within the cup the requisite medicine, the marginal portions of such plates being accommodated within annular recesses 4: produced in the opposite faces of the cup 2 and surrounding the opening therethrough, whereby the outer faces of such plates will be substantially flush with the faces of the cup 2.
From the foregoing description of my improvements, it will be obvious that a bridle bit constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and com paratively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which medicine may be caused to mix with a salivary fluid and it will also be obvious from the foregoing description that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and scope thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise formation and arrangement of theseveral parts herein disclosed in carrying out my invention in practice.
Having thus fully described my invention what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described comprising a flat ring like member provided with diametrically opposed extensions, bit sections connected with the extensions through the medium of universal joints, and removable perforated closure plates for the open faces of the member, the opposite faces In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my of the meanbler adjacent {the bore thergof bei signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses. ing rovi ec with annu ar recesses a apte to a ocommodate the marginal portions of VVILBUR MATEER the plates whereby the outer faces of such Witnesses:
plates are substantially flush With the outer J. M. HOIGLER,
faces of the member. U. G. DIOKEY.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
