GLOTHES-DRAINING ATTACHMENT FOR WASHBOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 9, 1913.
Patented Mar. 17, 1914. Serial No. 788,858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, AssUNTA SGARLATA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and' useful Improvements in Clothes-Draining Attachments for Washboilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved draining attachment for wash boilers, to be hung in one end of a wash boiler and to be used for supporting clothes after they have been taken out of the suds and to drain and cool them preparatory to rinsing, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and'arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved device of this character which is extremely cheap and simple, which may be readily placed in a wash boiler for use or removed therefrom and the parts of which may be readily disassembled to enable the same to be arranged in a small space, as for shipment or storage.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 is a plan of a draining attachment for wash boilers constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same arranged in one end of a wash boiler. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same.
In accordance with my invention, I provide a shelf 1 which may be made of sheet metal or any other suitable material and is substantially semi-circular in shape and of a size adapting it to be placed in one end of a wash boiler. This shelf is foraminous and is here shown as provided with openings 2 to permit suds to drain from clothes or other articles placed on the shelf after having been taken out from the boiler. The shelf is provided at its front corners and at intermediate portions with downturned lugs 34. The outer end of the shelf is doubled and bent around a reinforcing wire 5. The ends of the wire project beyond the sides of the shelf and are screw-threaded as at 6.
In connection with the shelf, I provide a wall or hanging member 7 which is also preferably made of sheet metal and the lower portion of which is doubled and inturned upwardly to form a flange 8. The said wall is provided at points between the hooks 9 with upwardly extending lugs 10 each of which has a handle loop 11 on the outer side thereof to facilitate the lifting and moving of the attachment. The downturned lu 's of the shelf are inserted between the wall I and its inwardly and upwardly extended flange 8 so that the said shelf is connected to and supported by the wall and the projecting ends of the wire 5 are passed through openings near the front sides of the wall and at points opposite the lugs 3 and provided with nuts 12 which bear on the outer sides of the wall 7 and coact with the wire to firmly clamp the shelf to the wall and yet permit the shelf to be readily detached from the wall to enable the device to be compactly disposed, this being especially advantageous where numbers of the attachments are to be packed for transportation or storage.
In the use of my improved draining attachment, when the same has been arranged in one end of a wash boiler and suspended from the top of the wall thereof, clothes after they have been boiled sufliciently in the suds are lifted from the suds in the boiler and placed on the shelf 1 and permitted to remain there long enough to be drained and cooled, the suds which drain from the clothes thus placed on the shelf passing through the openings 2 and back into the boiler and thus being prevented from being wasted and rendering it unnecessary to resupply the boiler with soap and water during an ordinary wash. After the clothes have been thus drained and cooled they may be readily and comfortably taken from the shelf and put in a tub for rinsing.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
My improved draining attachment may be made of any suitable size and may be made stamped out in a single piece and may be constructed of wire, or granite wire as well as sheet metal.
I claim 1. A drainer of the class described comprising a shelf having downturned lugs and of a size and shape adapted to fit in one end of a wash boiler, and a wall extendin around the sides and one end of the shelf and provided at its lower side with an inturned upwardly extending flange over which the lugs of the shelf are engaged, the said wall being also provided with supporting hooks to engage over the Wall of a boiler and hang the drainer therein.
2. A drainer of the class described comprising a shelf having downturned lugs and of a size and shape adapted to fit in one end of a wash boiler, and a wall extending around the sides and one end of the shelf and provided at its lower side with an inturned upwardly extending flange over which the lugs of the shelf are engaged, the said wall being also provided with supportvided with nuts engaging the outer sides of the wall.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ASSUNTA SGARLATA.
