The present invention includes means cooperating with one of the embossing cylinders whereby the head of the sheet when it is slid along the feed board toward the circumference of the cylinder and before it is grasped by the gripper, is held between fingers mounted to oscillate at predetermined times.
By means of this invention the fingers are actuated to release the head of the sheet simultaneously when the grippers grasp the sheet to carry it with the cylinder. These fingers guide and gage the sheet to give perfeet alinement relative to the embossing cylinders, and the succeeding sheet can be positioned between the fingers before the tail of the first sheet has passed under the fingers. By this method the machine can be rotated at high speed and a sheet embossed without skipping any of the revolutions of the cylinders.
Further details of the invention are more fully described in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of an embossing press embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation the feed board and cylinder adjusting devices having been removed.
In these drawings is shown an embossing machine including side frames (6 between which are mounted a pair of cylinders Z2. These cylinders carry plates 0 for embossing a sheet of paper (Z on both sides. One of the cylinders is journaled in sliding boxes 6 having adjusting devices f for moving the cylinder to or from the opposite cylinder. One of the cylinders carries a gripper g of well known construction. A feed board 7L serves to support the sheets of paper before being embossed. The cylinders are rotated in the proper direction by means of gears 2' driven by a pulley j with belt connection to a motor.
The gaging devices for guiding the sheet from the feed board consist of a cam 71': secured to the shaft of one of the cylinders. This cam is timed to operate the gaging devices at every revolution of the cylinders. The gaging connections include a rock shaft m extending across the top of the machine, and journaled in standards a secured to the frame. This shaft is provided with collars 0 two or more, clamped to the shaft by means of thumb screws 2) threaded in the collars. Each collar carries a slotted sheet stop or finger 9 having a thumb screw 1 for mounting the finger on a collar. This sheet stop can be adjusted vertically relative to the cylinder by actuating a thumb screw 8 in engagement with the upper angular portion of the finger and threaded in the top of the collar. A lever 25 is secured to the rock shaft and fulcrumed at a to an upright o movably connected by means of a pin and slot 7 to the frame. The other end of this lever is pivoted to a vertically arranged link to having at its lower portion an anti-friction roller a" normally in contact with the periphery of the cam. The link has its lower end slotted to engage a stud y extending from the frame. A spring a is adapted to hold the roller in. engagement with the cam.
The lower portion of the sheet stop has a hook portion or finger 5 bent at right angles to the vertical portion of the stop for supporting the head of the sheet. Above this hook portion is fixed a springy metal member 6 having an upwardly curved portion. This device in combination with the hook portion of the stop constitutes fingers for holding the head of the sheet.
It will be seen that when the sheet is positioned between the two fingers it is supported on the hook member, while the upper springy member prevents upward movement of the sheet. In this arrangement the edge of the sheet is stopped by the vertical portion of the stop, and thus gaged to be in a straight line with the cylinder. The gaging devices are operated when the antifriction roller is in contact with the low portion of the cam thus moving the link downward by means of the spring and rocking the lever 25 and the shaft. Through these connections the stop 9 is oscillated to move from under the head of the sheet which then drops on to the cylinder in the path of the grippers and is thereby carried about the cylinder.
It should be understood that the cam imparts intermittent movement to the sheet stop, in other words when the anti-friction roller is in contact with the concentric portion of the cam, the stop remains stationary or in a position to hold the sheet. The concentric portion of the cam includes about three-quarters of its circumference and the eccentric portion the remainder so that the sheet stop will be in its stationary position for the succeeding sheet while the first sheet is being embossed by the cylinders. This arrangement gives more time in which to feed the sheets than when feed points are used.
I claim:
1. In a sheet gage the combination with a pair of embossing or printing cylinders, grippers carried by one of the cylinders, a rock shaft located over the gripper cylinder, an adjustable clamp mounted on the rock shaft, a sheet stop carried by the clamp, means carried by the stop and coacting with the clamp for adjusting the stop relative to the cylinder, a lever connected to the rock shaft, a link pivoted to the lever, and a cam carried by the gripper cylinder to actuate the link. 7
2. In a sheet gage the combination with a pair of embossing or printing cylinders, grippers carried by one of the cylinders, a rock shaft located over the grip-per. cylinder, an adjustable clamping sleeve mounted on the rock shaft, a sheet stop depending from the clamp, a set screw mounted on the stop for vertically adjusting the stop, a lever connected to the rock shaft, a link pivoted to the lever, and a cam carried by the gripper cylinder to actuate the link.
