SECTIONAL WHEEL-Rim.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,'SAMUEL M. BEERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sectional Wheel- Rims, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the class of sectional wheel-rims used for securing upon them the beaded outer casings covering the inner inflatable tubes, or .resiliently-cushioning fillings forming the tires for automobile-wheels.
The present rim, while intended for general'use, is more especially designed for securing, at its beaded edges, the outer casing covering the tire-filling which forms the ject of my'application for Letters Patent filed concurrently herewith on the 20th day of August, 1913, Serial Number "785,625;
and it is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a broken view in elevation of a wheel provided with my improved tireholding rim; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line 2, Fig. 1, showing the split ring. in

The body. of my improved rim is an annulus 6 fitting and fastened about a wheelfelly 7, and provided about its inner edge with a flange 6' against which abuts a ring 8 having its inner face undercut to receive and confine the adjacent bead of a rubber tire-casing 9. An aperture 10 is shown to be provided in the annulus 6 for protrusion through it of the nipple 10 of an inner inflatable rubber tube 11 when my rim is used for fastening thereon a pneumatic tire. At intervals about the outer edge of the annulus are provided inwardlyextending lugs or cars '12 containing threaded holes 13. For clenching the casing at its outer bead a split resilient ring 14 is provided to encircle the annulus 6, this ring having its inner face undercut to fit against the outer casing-bead at 14'. This outer ring is prov1ded,at intervals corresponding with those at which the lugs or ears 12 extend on the annulus 6, with similar lugs or ears 16 containing holes 17; and it is fastened in place by bolts 18 passed through the registering holes 13 and 17 in coinciding lugs or cars 12 and 16. On the inner edge of the ring 15 are provided, at intervals, inwardly-projecting lips 19 beveled on their under edges at a different angle from the bevel of the outer face of the split ring to engage that face wedge-like. 'In tightening the bolts 18, the lips 19 are wedged against the beveled outer face of the ring 14 which is thereby stretched about the respective casing-bead to bring the split ends more or less closely together, thereby tightly confining the casing at its beads in the opposite undercut faces and at the same time tightening the split ring about the annulus .6 to, fasten the casing rigidly thereon.
My improved rim-construction thus serves to securely hold a the in place, and renders and quickly removable and replacea'ble, since to remove a tire it is only required to withdraw the bolts for taking off T the ring 15, thereby freeing the split ring and releasing the tire, for its removal, to be repaired or to be replaced by a new one, which last-named operation may be as easily and quickly performed as that for removing the tire.
It will be understood that the Wedging members 19 are formed as spaced lips, for the sake of lightness but itwould be within 95 my invention to form them as a continuous annular lip for the wedging purpose. Moreover, other details of the described construction may be variously modified without departure from my invention.
What I claim as new and by Letters Patent is 1. A sectional tire-rim comprising, in combination, an annulus adapted to encircle and be secured to a wheel felly, means with one edge of said annulus adapted to coact with and hold one side of a tlre, a split ring having its radially outer face beveled encircling the other e ge of said annulus, f and means havinga laterahmpvementto 110' desire to secure co-acting ward the felly adapted to co-act with the beveled face of said split ring to clamp the tire to the rim.
,2. A sectional tire-rim comprising, in combination, an annulus to encircle and be secured about a Wheel felly, and provided about one edge with a retaining ring, a split ring having its radially outer face beveled encircling the annulus at its opposite edge,and a ring releasably fastened to said opposite edge of-the annulus, and provided with lips -adapted to engage with a Wedgeaction the said inclined face of the split ring, for the purpose set forth.
3. A sectional tire-rim comprising, in combination, an annulus to encircle and be secured to a whcel-felly and provided about its inner edge with a ring having an undercut inner face, a split-ring encircling the annulus, having an undercut inner face and a beveled outer face, and an outer ring releasably fastened to the outer edge of the annulus and provided with wedging lips engaging the beveled face of the split ring, for the purpose set forth.
4. A sectional tire-rim comprising, in combination, an annulus to encircle and be secured to a wheel-folly and provided about its inner edge with a flange and about its outer edge with inwardly-projecting ears, wring about the annulus confined by said flange, a split ring encircling the annulus and having a beveled outer face, said flangeconfined ring and split ring being formed to confine between them a tire casing at its beaded edges, an outer ring having 1nwardly-projecting ears and wedging lips,
and bolts passing through coincident ears on the annulus and said outer ring to fasten the outer ring to the annulus and wedge said lips against the beveled face of the split ring, forthe purpose set forth.
