To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. PRIMM, re-
siding at Lima, in the county of Allen and State of Ohio, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Governors, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention relates to governors such as are illustrated in my Patent No. 1,057,271, and the object thereof is to simplify the construction and increase the efficiency or sensitiveness of operation of such governors.
A further object of my invention is 'to provide an eccentric-controlling governor which will be effective not only to adjust the amount of radial eccentricity of an eccentric with relation to the center of arotary member upon which it may be carried, but which will at the same time adjust the angular position thereof.
While my invention may be used for various purposes, it is particularly adapted for use on internal combustion engines to operate and control a reciprocating rod of a.
pump for injecting successive charges of fuel into the combustion chamber of such engines. IVhen used for this purpose, the general arrangement as far as the connection to such engines is concerned, may be such as that illustrated in my pending application, Serial No. 694,811.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of my specification, I have illustrated an embodiment of my invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the governor attached to an engine shaft, which is shown in section; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line IIII, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line IIIIII, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a View similar to Fig. 1, but showing the opposite face of the governor. In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the several parts of the governor are illustrated in the relative positions which they occupy for a maximum eccentricity, while in Fig. 4 the parts are illustrated in their positions of minimum eccentricity.
In the several figures like numerals are used to designate like parts.
Referring to this illustrative embodiment of my invention, a circular plate or block 1, provided with a laterally-extending sleeve 2, is adjustably secured to the shaft 3 by means of key bolts 4, such block being rotatable with said shaft. An eccentric 5 consisting preferably of a circular plate provided with a central U-shaped slot 6, is slidably mounted upon said sleeve 2. However, instead of mounting the eccentric directly upon said sleeve, I preferably mount, rotatably, a ring or bushing? upon said sleeve, such ring being provided with parallel guide surfaces upon which the slot 6 of the eccentric plate 5 is slidably mounted. Bolts 9 extend through suitable slots 10 in the block 1 and engage the eccentric plate 5, such slots being suitably disposed to permit of the desired rela tive movement between said. block and eccentric. Upon the periphery of the eccentric a split ring 1]., operatively connected to a rod 12, is rotatably mounted, the arrangement being such that the rod is caused to reciprocate as the block 1 and the eccentric 5 carried thereby revolves.
In order to adjust the center of the eccentric plate 5, and hence the center of the split ring 11, with relation to the axis of the shaft 3 so that both the extent of reciprocation of the rod 12 and the period of its reciprocation with relation to the angular position of the shaft 3 may be adjusted according to the angular velocity of such shaft, I pivot a weighted arm 13 in the plate 1, such arm being provided with a cylindrical projection 14; adapted to engage the eccentric 5. The arm 18, as shown herein, is formed of two parts attached to each other by a bolt 15, the inner or pivoted portion of the arm consisting of a disk 16, having the projection 14: formed integrally therewith, the projection being eccentrically disposed with relation to the center of such disk. A suitable tension spring 17 is secured at its opposite ends to the arm 13 and block 1, such spring being-adapted to hold the arm 13 in the position indicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 when the shaft 3 is not rotating or when rotating at a relatively low speed.
To the end that the contacting surfaces between relatively movable parts of the governor may be lubricated without stopping the engine, I form a series of oil ducts leading from a source of lubrication supply to such surfaces. As shown herein, I preferably form a groove 18 in the sleeve 2 adjacent to the shaft 3, and provide a passageway 19 from such groove to a tube 20 mounted in the ring 7 and extending into a recess 21 in the eccentric plate 5. A passageway 22 extends through the projection 14 and disk 16 to the outer surface of such disk. In operation, the oil from a cup 23 flows through a pipe 24 into the groove 18, from which it is expelled by centrifugal force through the passageway 19 into the tube 20. From such tube the oil readily flows to all the contacting relatively movable surfaces of the governor.
In the operation of the governor, the spring 17 during such time as the shaft 3 is at rest or revolving at a relatively low speed, holds the arm 13 in the position inclicated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, in which position the center of the eccentric 5 is at its maximum distance from the center of the shaft 3. As the shaft 3 speeds up, the arm 18, due to centrifugal force, gradually moves to the position indicated in Fig. l, which is the position of minimum eccentricity. In moving fro-1n one position to the other, the eccentricengaging projection M of the arm 13 causes the eccentric plate 5 to slide upon the ring 7, thus effecting a radial adjustment of the eccentric, and further causes the ring 7 to revolve through a small arc upon the sleeve 2, thus effecting an angular adjustment of the eccentric with relation to the center of the shaft 3.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a governor, the combination with a rotary member, of an annular block concentrically secured thereto, an eccentric movably mounted upon said block, and a weighted movable arm pivotally mounted in said block and operatively engaging said eccentric, the movement of said arm being effective to adjust the center of said eccentric radially and angularly with relation to the center of said rotary member.
2. In a governor, the combination with a rotary member, of a block secured thereto and having as a part thereof a sleeve concentric with the axis of rotation of said rotary member, an eccentric slidably mounted with relation to said sleeve, and a weighted crank arm pivoted in said block and provided witl a projection adapted to engage said eccentric and move it radially and angularly with relation to the center of rotation of said rotary member.
3. In a governor, the combination with a rotary member, of a block secured thereto and having as a part thereof a sleeve concentric with the axis of rotation of said rotary member, a ring rotatably mounted upon'said sleeve and provided with parallel guidesurfaces, an eccentric slidably mounted upon said guide surfaces, and a weighted crank arm pivoted in said block and provided with a projection adapted to engage and move said eccentric.
4. In a governor, the combination with a rotatable shaft, of a block adjustably secured thereto and having as a part thereof a sleeve concentric with the axis of said shaft, a ring rotatably mounted on said sleeve and provided with parallel guide surfaces, an eccentric slidably mounted upon said guide surfaces, and a weighted crank arm pivotally mounted in said block and provided with a projection adapted to engage and move said eccentric radially and angularly with relation to the axis of said shaft.
