T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EUCLID I. LA GHAPELLE, of Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in lasting machines.
One object of the invention is to provide means under the control of the operator in a lasting machine, for retarding or stopping the pulling action of the grippers at one or both sides of the last. I preferably provide two independent retarding or stopping devices to control the action of the grippers at each side of the last. In the usual op eration of my improved machine but one of the retarding or stopping devices is operated so as to produce more strain on the upper at one side relatively to the strain on the upper at the opposite side.
Another object of the invention is to provide means in a machine for lasting shoes for giving a preliminary wiping action to certain parts of the upper. To the accom' plishment of this object I provide auxiliary wipers which are constructed and arranged to act on the upper preliminary to the usual wiping operation. This preliminary wiping action at the sides of the toe prepares the upper for the final lasting operation of the toe by wipers or otherwise. I prefer to have the auxiliary wipers located at thecorners of the toe between the tip-seam and the end of the toe and so arranged as to wipe the upper toward the toe. I preferably apply fastenings at the sides of the toe during the time the auxiliary wipers are holding the upper on the last. WVhen, however, wipers are provided for the final wiping operation of the toe, the application of fastenings is not then absolutely necessary at those points.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for automatically rocking the last as it is moved into the upper; that is, the sides of the last are alternately forced into the upper. I have found that this motion sets the upper to the last in a much more satisfactory manner than a straight or continuous motion, as has been heretofore employed. In connection with this object,

I also provide means under control of the operator for consecutively moving the sides of the last into the upper to predetermined points preferably after the automatic movements described, and to finally hold the last as adjusted in the upper before and during the application of fastenings.
Other features of the invention will be apparent to one skilled in the art from the following description and accompanying drawings of one embodiment of the inven tion.

This invention has been shown and described as applied to a lasting machine such as is shown in the patent to Ronald McFeely, No. 663,777 dated Dec. 11, 1900, but it is to be understood that the invention can be applied equally well to various other lasting machines. The general arrangement is like the McFeely machine.
The head 1 carries a shaft 2 which actuates the various parts of the machine. Movement is imparted to the gripper levers 3, 4, and 5 through springs 6 and the usual mechanisms not shown in the drawings. Lasting tacks or fastenings are supplied to the driving devices indicated at 7 through tubes 8.
The levers 3, 4, and 5 are in operative relation to the usual bars 9, 10 and 11 which open the grippers. The levers are arranged to operate grippers 12,13 and 14 each of which has a co-acting wiper 15, 16 and 17 In the present invention I provide an auxiliary wiper 18 on each side of the last which acts on the upper to position the upper as shown in Fig. 5.
The levers 3 and 5 support the grippers at the sides of the last. In the particular form of the invention selected for illustration, I apply my retarding or stopping device to these levers so as to co-act with a fixed part of the machine. The levers 3 and 5 are each provided with a second lever 19 pivotally mounted on the main levers at 20. (Figs. 6 and 7.) The rear end of the second lever is provided with a boss 21 which upon actuation of the second lever, will engage a rib 22 projecting from the head 1. A spring 23 is provided to hold the second or brake levers normally inactive. In the operation of this device the operator will usually grasp the lever 19 at the little-toe side of the last so as to retard or stop at that side of the last the movement of the grippers from or toward the last. In the general use of this feature of the invention, the operator would stop the movement of the grippers toward the last at the little-toe side so as to secure a relatively greater strain at the big-toe side and he would preferably hold the grippers in this position during the application of fastenings. The movement oft-he grippers may be controlled at one or both sides as the condition of the work may demand or as the operator may desire.
When the movement of the grippers at one side of the last is varied it is desirable that provision shall be made to allow a lateral movement of the toe-gripper. In my inven tion this is secured by holding the bar 11 between laterally extending springs 24: which are compressed between guide plates 25 which engage the bar and the sides of the yoke 26. By this construction the toe-end gripper can yield toward the side of the last under the influence of the side grippers having the greater pulling movement.
The device for forcing the last into the upper is shown in detail in Figs. 8 and 9. This comprises a plate 27 pivoted for movement about a longitudinal axis on a stud 50 which is fixed in a block 51 pivoted at 28 on the machine frame. The whole device is movable toward and from the last by a cam 29 acting on a roll 30. In order to give a rocking movement to the plate I provide it with an arm 31 (Fig. 4) carrying a roll 32 which engages an irregular cam path 33 in a fixed bracket 34. As the plate is depressed by the cam 29, the arm 31 will impart rocking movements to the plate, first to one side and then to the opposite side. The final portion of the cam path is brought to a central position so as to finally set the last in a normal position.
The stud 50 is provided with a foot 35 to engage the sole on the last near the center. Feet 36 carried by the plate 27 are provided to engage the sole near the sides. These feet are each formed on the end of a lever l1 pivoted at 37 on a segment 39. The segments are pivoted at 410 on the plate 27 and provided with inter-meshing teeth so that any movement of one segment is imparted to the other. It is not desirable that the positioning of the last in the upper shall be left entirely to the control of the automatic mechanism before described, because of the variation of the thickness and quality of the material. I therefore prefer to have the levers 41 hand operated to finally position the last in the upper whenever the nature of the work may so demand. In order that the last may be uniformly positioned in a given lot of shoes I provide stop screws 38 to engage the levers A1 and thereby predetermine the limit of movement of the feet 36.
I wish it to be understood that I am not limited by the construction and arrangement shown and described except as is specified in the claims.
Having described the best form of the invention at present known to me, what- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A lasting machine, having,.in combination, grippers adapted to engage an upper on a last, and automatic power actuated means to move the last intermittently into the upper during the time the upper is engaged by the grippers.
2. A lasting machine, having, in combination, grippers adapted to be positioned at opposite sides of a last to pull an upper on the last, means to actuate the said grippers, and means, under control of the operator, whereby the pulling action of the said grippers at one side of the last may be stopped by friction against the pulling action of the said grippers .at the opposite side of the last.
3. A lasting machine, having, in combination, grippers adapted to pull an upper on a last, means to actuate the said grippers, means to force the last into the upper, and automatic means to vary successively the lateral angle of the last relatively to the plane of the grippers during the time the last is being forced into the upper.

A lasting machine, having, in combination, grippers adapted to engage an upper on a last, automatic means to actuate the grippers to engage and pull the upper, means, under control of the operator, whereby the grippers may be actuated to finally last the upper, and additional means, under control of the operator, whereby the grippers may be held from action, said additional means being inactive during the automatic actuation of the grippers and adapt-ed to be rendered active thereafter by the operator during the final actuation of the grippers.
7 A lasting machine, having, in combination, grippers adapted to be positioned at opposite sides of a last to pull an upper on the forepart of the last, automatic means to actuate the said grippers, levers, under control of the operator, whereby the said grippers may be actuated to work the upper on the last after the automatic actuation of the said grippers, additional levers, under control of the operator,whereby the said grippers may be held from movementat one side of the last, and means to apply fastenings to hold the upper in last-ed condition during the time the said grippers are being held from movement at one side of the last.
8. A lasting machine, having, in combination, grippers adapted to be positioned at opposite sides of a last to pull an upper on the last, means to actuate the said grippers, means, under control of the operator, whereby the said grippers may be held from movement at one side of the last against the pulling movement of the said grippers at the opposite side of the last, means, under control of the operator, whereby the said grippers may be held from movement at the said opposite side of the last, and means to render said holding means inactive at the said opposite side of the last during the movement of the said grippers at the said opposite side of the last.

A lasting machine, having, in combination, grippers adapted to be positioned at opposite sides of a last to pull an upper on the last, automatic means to actuate the said grippers to pull the upper, means, under control of the operator, whereby the said grippers may be actuated to pull the upper at one side of the last independently of the pulling action or" the said grippers at the opposite side of the last, after the automatic actuation of the said grippers, and additional means, under control of the operator, adapted to co-act with a part of the machine whereby the pulling action of the said grippers at one side of the last may be intermittently retarded independently of the pulling action of the said grippers at the opposite side of the last.

A lasting machine, having, in combi' nation, grippers adapted to be positioned at opposite sides of a last to pull an upper on the last, automatic means to actuate the said grippers, means, under control of the operator, whereby the said grippers at one side of the last may be actuated independently of the actuation of the said grippers at the opposite side of the last, additional means, under control of the operator, whereby the action of the said grippers at one side of the last may be retarded independently of the action of the said grippers at the opposite side of the last, and connections between the said means, under control of the operator, whereby the said grippers may be actuated and the said additional means, under control said grippers may be retarded.

A lasting machine, having, in combination, grippers adapted to be positioned at opposite sides of a last to engage an upper on the last, automatic means to actuate the said grippers to pull the upper, means, under control of the operator, whereby the said grippers to pull the upper at one side of the last may be actuated independently of the actuation of the said grippers at the opposite side of the last, additional means, under control of the operator, whereby the action of the said grippers at one side of the last may be controlled independently of the action of the said grippers at the opposite side no of the last after the automatic actuation of the said grippers, and means to apply fastenings to hold the upper in lasted condition during the time the said grippers are under control of the said additional means.

A lasting machine, having, in combination, grippers adapted to be positioned at opposite sides oi a last to engage an upper on the last, automatic means to actuate the said grippers to pull the upper, means, un- 1st der control of the operator, whereby the said grippers to pull the upper at one side of the last may be actuated independently of the actuation of the said grippers at the opposite side of the last, means to move the last into the upper, and additional means, under control of the operator, whereby the action of the said grippers at one side of the last may be controlled independently of the action of the said grippers at the opposite side of the last during the time the last is being moved into the upper.

A lasting machine, having, in combination, grippers adapted to be positioned at opposite sides of a last to engage an upper on the last, automatic means to actuate the said grippers to pull the upper, means, under control of the operator, whereby the said gripper to pull the upper at one side of the last may be actuated independently of the actuation of the said grippers at the opposite side of the last, and additional means, under control of the operator, whereby the action of the said grippers at one side of the last may be controlled independently of the action of the said grippers at the opposite side of the last during the automatic actuation of the said grippers.

A lasting machine, having, in combination, grippers adapted to be positioned at the big toe side of the forepart of a last to pull an upper on the last, grippers adapted to be positioned at the little toe side of the forepart of the last to pull the upper on the last, means, under control of the operator, whereby the said grippers at the big toe side of the last may be actuated to pull the upper with relatively greater pulling force than the pulling force of the said grippers upon the upper at the little toe side of the last, and additional means under control of the operator, whereby the action of the said grippers at the little toe side of the last may be controlled independently of the action of the said grippers at the big toe side of the last.

A lasting machine, having, in combination, grippers adapted to be positioned at the big toe side of the forepart of a last to pull an upper on the last, grippers adapted to be positioned at the little toe side of the forepart of the last to pull the upper on the last, a gripper adapted to be positioned at the toe-end of the last to pull the upper on the last, means to permit lateral movement of the said gripper at the toe-end of the last, means, under control of the operator, to permit the said grippers at the big toe side of the last to pull the upper with relatively greater pulling force than the pulling force of the said grippers upon the upper at the little toe side of the last, and additional means, under control of the operator, whereby the action of the said grippers at the little toe side of the last may be controlled independently of the action of the said grippers at the big toe side of the last. 7

A lasting machine, having, in combination, grippers adapted to be positioned at opposite sides of a last to engage an upper on the last, automatic means to actuate the said grippers to engage and pull the upper, means to permit the operator to move the said grippers at one side of the last independently of the said grippers at the op-' posite side of the last, and additional means, under control of the operator, whereby the said grippers at one side of the last may be held from movement independently of the movement of the said grippers at the opposite ide of the last, said additional means being adapted to co-act with a part of the machine whereby the said grippers may be intermittently held from movement at one side of the last during the movement of the said grippers at the opposite side of the last.

A lasting machine, having, in com bination, grippers adapted to be positioned at opposite sides of a last to engage an upper on the last, automatic means to actuate the said grippers to engage and pull the upper, means to permit the operator to move the said grippers at one side of the last independently of the said grippers at the opposite side of the last, and additional means, under control of the operator, whereby the movement of the said grippers at one side of the last may be retarded independently of the movement of the said grippers at the opposite side of the last, said additional means being adapted to co-act with a part of the machine whereby the movement of the said grippers at one side of the last may be intermittently retarded during the movement of the said grippers at the opposite side of the last.

A lasting machine, having, in combination, grippers adapted to be positioned at opposite sides of a last to pull an upper on the last, means, under control of the operator, whereby the grippers at one side of the last may be moved independently of the grippers at the opposite side of the last, and additional means, under control of the operator, adapted to co-act with a part of the machine whereby the grippers at one side may be intermittently held from movement toward the last against the strain of the grippers upon the upper at the opposite side of the last.
