LOCK-JOINT FOR WINDOW-STILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. iniaia.
Application filed August 20, 1913. Serial No. 785,731.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that 1. Lotus T'IYACINTH Forms, of the city of Quebec, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lock- Joints for lVindow Stiles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lock joints for window stiles, and the objects of the invention are to provide simple and effective means which will permit the sash to be readily removed from the inside when it is desired to clean the window, and such means as will not interfere with a Weatherstrip which will be water, weather and air proof.
Further objects are to provide such means which will remain automatically in locked position and may be readily applied to any part of the sash, and it consists essentially of the improved construction hereinafter described in detail in the accompanying specification and drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional view of the inside of the window frame illustrating the present invention, one of the sashes being swung inwardly for cleaning purposes. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the window stile according to the present invention. Fig. 3 is a cross section through the window stile.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the drawings: A represents the window frame of any suitable construction and B and G the sashes thereof.
In accordance with the present invention one of the stiles 10 of each sash is provided on the side with a removable locking bar D to which the usual cord 11 which is employed in the English style of window is connected. This locking bar is connected to the window stile by a lock joint adapted to be locked by longitudinal sliding movement.
As illustrated the locking bars and the window stiles are provided with complementary overlapping plates 12 and 13 supported from longitudinal shoulders 14 and 15 on the locking bar and stile respectively. The overlapping plates 12 and 13 are Wedge shaped and tapered in cross section so that when they are drawn together in a lateral direction the lock bar and stile will be drawn tightly together to provide an air and weather-proof joint. The means which I have provided for drawing the lock bar and stile together by longitudinal movement comprise pins or screws 16 extending through the plate 12 into the locking bar D, the portion of the screw or pin between the plate 12 and the locking bar being surrounded by a short sleeve or ferrule, 17. and inclined open slots 18, provided in the edge of the plate 13 which are adapted to engage the screws or pins 16 whereby, when the lock bar and stile are moved longitudinally with respect to each other they will be at the same time drawn closer together. Any suitable weather strip which may be on the window will be received into a suitable slot 19 provided on the lock bar.
In placing the sashes in position on the window, the weight of the sash will bear in a downward direction, and thus send a portion of the stile downwardly, while the weight connected to the end of the cord 11 -will tend to bear the lock bar upwardly,
and thus they will be held in tight locking engagement. When it is desired to swing the sash for cleaning purposes, the upward movement of the lock bar is limited at a desired point, as by example inserting a staple 19 into the window frame above the lock bar; suitable perforations being pro vided in the side of the window frame for this purpose; then, when the sash is raised the stile will separate from the lock bar permitting the sash to be swung outwardly as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. If for any purpose it is desired to lock the sash, a'locking pin 20 may be provided to extend laterally through the stile and lock bar and firmly bind them together.
It will be seen that the sashes will be able to be taken out without disturbing anything in the frame, the weight cord and weatherstrip remaining in the same places as originally. The joint between the lock bar and stile is water, weather and air proof. The device is easily applied, and may, if desired, be applied to old sashes by removing a portion of the stile on one side and putting the locking bar in place thereof.
As many changes in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention could be made within the scope of the claim and without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and clined open slots, and pins beneath the other 10 not in a limiting sense. plate adapted to engage said slots.
What I claim as my invention is: In Witness whereof I have hereunto set A 1lock joint for Window stiles comprising my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
