To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Louis 0. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Casket; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates particularly to the manufacture of burial caskets.
The object of my invention is the pro vision of a stamped sheet-metal casket of built-up form, whereby it can be cheaply manufactured, is strong and durable in its construction, and is capable of having inoldings of different forms and design attached thereto, as desired, thus enhancing the practicability and commercial value of caskets of this class.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a central vertical longitudinal section of a casket embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof on the line 2 1 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line a2, a in Fig. 1. Fig. .1- is an enlarged vertical cross-section of a portion of the casket, and Fig. 5 is a similar view with a modified form of molding and top.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the bottom, 2 and 3 the side and end wall sections, respectively, 1 the cover, and 5 and 6 the moldings at the lower and upper edges, respectively, of the wall sections 2 and 3.
The bottom 1 comprises a single sheetmetal piece which is preferably inwardly looped at intervals transversely across the same to form a plurality of longitudinally extending upwardly projecting reinforcing ribs 7. The marginal edge of the bottom section is doubled over upon itself in hooked form, as indicated at 8, to inter-engage with the lower edges of the side and end walls of the casket, as hereinafter described.

engaged in vertical seams, as at 9, and have their lower edges bent inwardly and then doubled outwardly upon themselves to provide horizontally disposed oulwvardly opening hook-shaped edges 10 for intcrengaging with the turned over edge 8 of the bottom section. The forming of the vertical or upright wall of the casket in the separate side and end sections 2 and 3 enables the length of the casket to be changed by simply changing the lengths of the side sections 2, or the width may be changed by changing the length of the end sections 3, or both the length and width may be changed as desired.
The vertical wall 23 is inwardly looped a short distance above its lower edge, as at 11, to provide an internal recess intermediate such loop and the inwardly extending hooked lower edge or loop 10 thereof en tirely around the lower portion of the wall in which a nailinf strip 12 of wood or other suitable material may be mounted, as shown. The wall is also provided adjacent to its top edge with vertically spaced inwardly disposed loops 13 and 14, which cooperate to provide an interior recess around. the upper edge portion of the wall in which a nailing strip 15 of wood or other suitable material is mounted. The upholstering is intended to be tacked or secured to the strips 12 and 15. Vertical bars 16 are attached at their lower and upper ends by nailing or in any other suitable manner to the respective strips 12 and 15 in convenient position to receive and form anchoring means for the securing bolts 17 of the handles 18.
The loops 10, .11. and 13, 1 1 in addition to cooper-a ting to form the nailing strip receiving recesses, also serve to receive and hold the edges of the molding strips 5 and (i, respectively, as shown. These molding strips are rolled in U-shape, or in any other suitable or desired form, and are intended to have their upper and lower inwardly projecting edges inserted into the openings of the registering loops and clamped therein by a closing of the loops thereagainst. Solder may also be employed if desired to effect a more rigid securing of the edges of the molding strips within the respective loops. It is thus evident that molding strips of any desired form or configuration in cross-section may be attached to the upper and lower edge portions of the casket body as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5.
The cover 4., which is shown in Figs. 1, 2
and 4:, is made up of a plurality of sheetmetal sections 19, 20 and 21 and nailing strips 22 and 23 of wood or other suitable material. The strip 19 forms the bottom marginal portion of the top and has its outer edge rolled to form a hollow bead 24 in which is disposed a reinforcing wire 25, thence extends upward a short distance and over to the downwardly extending loop 26.
to form the bottom recess in which the strip 22 is mounted, the inner edge portion of such recess being disposed over the upper edge of the body wall to seat thereon, best shown in Fig. 1. The section 19 after being looped, as at 26, extends upward and inward and cooperates with the inner edge portion of the section 20 to form a recess in which the strip 23 is disposed. The section 20 extends outward and downward from its inner edge portion over the sec-- tion 19 and strip 22 and has its free edge fitting downward within the edge bead 2a of the section 19. The section 21 of the top forms a cap member and rests at its outer edge upon the inner edge portion of the.
section 20 over the strip 23, being secured thereto by solder, or in any other suitable manner. he upper section 21 is provided at one end with a removable part 21 which, upon being removed, exposes the interior of one end portion of the casket toview. The removable section 21 is provided at one end with a hook 27 for engaging under a cross-piece 28 at the inner end of the upper section 21 and is provided at its outer end with a pivoted hook 29 for releasably engaging with a portion of the section 22 at the adjacent end of the top.
In Fig. 5 the cover and top molding of the casket are of suitable form to provide a sealed joint therebetween. In this figure the top molding, which is designated 6 is of trough form with its outer upper edge 6 preferably extending above the top edge of the body and reinforced with a wire 6, as shown. The cover is of simpler construction than that above described in that it comprises a single sheet-metal section 30 that extends from one side to the other of the casket throughout its length and is pro-- vided at its edge with a foot recess 31 in which a nailing strip 32 is mounted. The recess 31 preferably extends both inwardly and outwardly from the outer edge portion of the cover and the strip 32 is intended to seat on the upper edge of the body wall of the casket with its outer portion projecting over the trough portion of the molding 6 and resting upon a compressible gasket or sealing member 33 which is disposed within the molding trough. The molding edge forms a trough in which a cement or other sealing agent may be deposited for sealing the outer edge of the foot piece of the cover.
It is evident that I have provided a sim ple and inexpensive construction of casket, the body of which is built up of a plurality of sheet-metal sections, which enables the making of the casket in different sizes, and also that moldings of any desired form can be applied to the casket to meet the whims or wishes of the purchasing public.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as 1 such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. A casket having its wall formed of sheet-metal and inwardly looped, and a mold strip having an edge inserted into and secured to the wall loop.
2. An article of the class described having a vertical wall which is provided at vertically spaced intervals with inwardly projecting loops, and a mold strip of sheet-metal having portions located on opposite sides thereof inserted into and secured to said loops.
3. An article of the class described having its vertical wall formed of sheet-metal and provided adjacent to each its upper and lower edges with a set of vertically-spaced horizontally disposed inwardly projecting loops, and a molding strip for each set of loops having portions projecting within and secured to said loops.
4. An article of the class described having the upright wall of its body of sheet-metal, which is inwardly looped at verticallyspaced intervals to provide an internal recess between the loops, a nailing strip secured within said recess, and external decorating means having portions projecting within and secured to said loops.
5. An article of the class described having a bottom wall with a turned over edge, an upright wall having vertically spaced inwardly looped portions, one of said looped portions interengaging with the turned over edge of the bottom, and an external mold strip having portions projected within said.

6. An article of the class described having a ribbed sheet-metal bottom provided with a turned over edge, an upright wall having a set of vertically spaced loops at each of its upper and lower edges, the lower loop interengaging with the turned over edge of the bottom, upper and lower mold strips of sheet-metal having edge portions projected into respective loops and secured against removal therefrom, and a nailing strip secured within the internal recess formed by the loops of each set.
7. An article of the class described comprising a sheet-metal bottom and a sectional sheet-metal upright wall having its lower edge inter-engaged with the edge of the bottom, said upright Wall being inwardly looped at vertieally spaced intervals to form internal recesses, and nailin strips secured in said recesses.
