AND WILLIAM REEL FOR MOVING PICT RE FILMS.
Specification of Battlers Patent.
Patented Mar. 3, 1914.
Application filed November 17, 1913. Serial No. 801,460.
To all 'w/LUflL'iZ may concern I Be it known that I, J on): H. REES, a citiden, in the county of New Haven and State oi Connecticut, have lnventeda new and useture Films and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full,
which said drawings constitute partof this application, and represent, in-
Figure 1 a side view of a reel for moving picture films'constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. '2 a sectional view of open position. Fig. 3 a similar view with the clamping-finger in the closed position and, engaged with the end of a moving picture film. Fig. 4 a plan view illustrating a film engaged with the hub and having the disks broken away. Fig. 5 a plan view of the hub with thespring-plate and clamp ing-finger removed, showing the recess with the bearing-plate inthe bottom thereof.
This invention relates to an improvement in reels for moving picture films. As the films are drawn through the kinematograph, it is wound upon a reel; and in the usual construction of these reels difiic'ulty is exwith the reel so that as the reel is revolved the film will be wound.
The object of this invention is to provide a reel with which the. film may be readily engaged or disengaged; and the invention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims. As usually constructed these reels consist of a central'hub 2.With disks 3, 4, at opposite ends, thesedisks being usually provided with holes or openings 5 through which the film with the hub. As a convenient means for connecting the end of the film with the huh, 1 form the hub with a recess 6 at one end of a shallow groove 7, and in the hoton opposite sides with outwardly projecting ribs 9 and 10 for the purpose as will hereafter appear. Extending through the glOOVG 7 and secured by a screw ll is a plate 12 forr'nedat its outer end which extends into recess '6 with ears. l3 and 14 between Which is pivoted a clamping finger 15 the outer end of which is adapted to bear upon the*surface of the hub and its inner end 16 rests upon the plate 8 in the recess. 1 may here note that the plate 12 "is formed from spring metal so as to normally force its outer end into the recess and clamp the finger 15 against the hub. The ribs 9 and 10 provide a bearing for the inner end 16 of the clamping finger, and these ribs are formed with stop-shoulders 1? and 18 which limitthe upward movement of theclamp ing-finger. lVhen ready for use'the clamping-finger 15 is raised as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and one end of a film 19 is placed upon the hub beneath the finger which is then snapped downward, ready access being had to it through one of the finger-openings 5. \Vhen snapped down the pressure of the plate 12 will firmly hold the clamping-finger against the hub so as to firmly grip the film between them, and owing to the location of the pivot with relation to the inner end of the clamping-finger, the clamping-finger will remain inits open position when desired.
I claim 1. A reel for moving picture films comprising a hub and two end disks, said hub formed with a recess, a spring plate connected with the hub and extending into said recess, and a clampingfinger pivoted to the .end of the spring-plate and adapted tobe held thereby in close engagement with the surface of the hub.
2. A. reelfor moving picture films conn prising a hub and two disks, said hub formed with a recess and a groove opening into the same, a spring-plate seated in said groove and formed at its end with ears which extend into said recess, a spring-finger pivotally connected with said ears and formed with an inwardly turned end having a bearing within said recess.
3. A reel for moving picture films comprising a hub and two disks, said hub formed with a recess, a bearing-plate in the bottom of said recess, av spring plate secured to said hub and formed at its inner end with ears projecting into said recess, and a clampingfinger pivotally connected with said ears and having its inner end extended into contact with said bearing-plate.
4. A reel for moving picture films comprising a hub and. two disks, said hub t'ormed with a recess, a plate in the bottom. of said recess, said plate formed with bearing ribs, :1 spring-plate secured to said hub and formed at its ends with ears projecting into said recess, and a clamping-finger pivoted to said spring-plate and formed at its inner end with a bend adapted to bear upon the ribs of said bearing-plate.
5'. A reel for moving picture films com-- prising a hub and twodisks connected there"- Withysaikihub-fonnedivith a recess, a plate invthe bottom of -said recess, a groove ex- 1 tending into saidwrece'ss, a spring platesewith ears projecting into said recess,
