To all lwhom 'it may conce/ra Be it known that I, JosnPH HENRY VVnrrnR, a citizen of the United 'States nfl America, residing at the city of Mexico, in the Republic of Mexico, have invented eertain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices for Heels or the like, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a clamp attachment for boot and shoe machinery, the ob ject of the invention being to provide an attachment or device which shall hold a shoe or the like by its heel in position for treatment by machine or hand, as the case may be, without any possibility ot' the heel slipping, or of damage to the heel by reason of the pressure exerted to maintain it tirmly in position, or from the insertion into said heels of screws, nails or the like used in attaching same to the body of the shoe.

To the above ends the invention consists in the improvements hereinafter described and claimed.

In order that the invention may be fully comprehended, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a convenient embodiment thereof.

Fig. 8 is a plan of the guide plate, the clamping members being removed. Fig. 9 is an end elevation of said plate. Fig. 10 is a side elevation of said plate' and Fig. 11 is another detail.`

Re erring to the drawings the device comprises a pair of clamping jaws 1, 2 formed with guide channels 3 and adapted to travel on a guide 4 extending across the upper face of the guide plate 5; as shown in Figs. 1, 6 and 7 the faces of these jaws are so formed that when they come together they will be adapted to embrace the heel of a shoe or the like andhold it firmly. Means are provided to cause the jaws to exert a clamping pressure which is distributed substantially uniformly over the heel, so as to avoid any tendency of said heel to split from the insertion therein of screws, nails and the like or become otherwise deformed under the pressure to which it is subjected, and in the embodiment of the invention herein described, this is effected by means of an adjusting screw 6 (see Fig.` 5) :formed with oppositely screw-threaded portions 'T and 8 `upon which the jaws l and 9.` are caused to ride, so that on turning said screw by means of the hand wheel 9, the jaws l and 2 will be caused to move through equal distances toward or away from one another, according to the direction in which said hand wheel t) is rotated. The median portion 10 between the portions 7 and 8 ot' the screw G is supported by a center-piece 11 (Figs. 1, 2 and 4) secured to the guide plate 5, and which center-piece rests on the under portion of the periphery of the median. portion 10 and serves to hold the adjusting screw G against longitudinal movement. The center-piece is secured in place by means of screws 12, and these screws pass through a dove-tailed guide 13 arranged beneath the guide plate which guide is adapted to take into a correspondingly formed guide channel in the work plate of the machine upon which the device is mounted, to hold said device firmly thereto, and at the same time to permit of the necessary adjustments.

Each of the clamp jaws 1, 2 is formed with a guide lug 14 in which is formed an opening 15, these openings being in alinement and adapted to lit closely to a guide bar 16, (Fig. 11). This bar not only serves to as sist in maintaining the proper alinement of the jaws 1,2 in their travel,but also assists in holding the heel in the clamp jaws, as the breast of the heel will come flush with said bar, so that said bar constitutes a seating for said heel and prevents it from slipping out of the jaws under the laterally-applied stresses.

The operation of the improved device will be readily comprehended from the preceding description; it will be appreciated that the device is exceedingly simple in construction and comprises very few parts.

It is to be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the particular construction hereinl described and, illustrated, as various modifications may be made therein by those skilled in the art without in any way departing from the spirit or the scope of the invention.
