ATTORNEYS 'WITNESSES gay 1M neaegse 'WJELLIAI'I LUTHER HANE, Gk QCA'JZA,
COMEINATION-TGUL EZMLDEI To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM L. HANn, a citizen of the United States and a resident of Ocala, in the county of arion and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combination-Tool Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in combination tool holders, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive holder of the character specified, for use with lathe planets and shapers, and wherein the holder may perform a plurality of functions, thus resulting in economy in both time and labor.
In the'draWings:-Figure 1 is a perspec tive view of the improved holder, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The present embodiment of the invention comprises a shank 1, having one of its ends reduced on opposite faces, to form two sur faces 2 and 3, on theopposite sides of the holder, which are parallel and inclined with respect to the adjacent faces of the shank. The shank is provided with a transverse opening 4, at the reduced end, the axis of the opening being-perpendicular to the surfaces 2 and 3, and as a consequence inclined with respect to the axis of the holder.
A tool post is arranged within the opening 4, the said post comprising a body portion 5, having a head 6-, at one end and the post is arranged in the opening with the head 6, engaging the surface 3, at the reduced end. The post is provided with a transverse slot 7 intermediate its ends, and the opposite end of the post from the head has a longitudinally extending internally threaded opening 8, which extends into the slot 7 at the axis of the post.
A set screw 9 is threaded into the open ing 8, the said set screw having at one end ahead 10, polygonal in cross section for engagement by a tool to turn the set screw, and the opposite end of the set screw is plain, as indicated at 11. The tool 12 is arranged within the slot 7 before mentioned, and a block 13 is used in connection with the set screw for holding the tool in adjusted position.
The slot. 7 is of greater length than the thickness of the tool, andis so arranged with respect to the body of the-post that when the head 6 engages the surface 3 of the shank, approximately halfthe length of the slot will be within the opening 4:- That to the slot 1 that a spect to the shank. 1s loosened, the post may be rotated in the end of the opening ithe surface 2 is counterbored or reamed as indicated at i l,
the said counterbored or reamed portion being formed on the segments of a sphere, whose center is within the axis of the post. The block 13, before mentioned, has one face 15 plane, for engagi g the tool and the opposite face 16 is curved longitudinally of the block, the curve corresponding to the shape of the counterbored portion of the opening 4. The block is of such thickness, that when the coir ex face thereof engages the countrbored end of the opening 4, the plane face 15 thereof will be extended beyond the surface 2, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2.
The block is constructed with respect 2 in the position above named, the convex Sill ace of the block will not engage the adjacent end of the slot 7. The block 13 is for reinforcing the tool,
The holder in. fact a shank :havingat one end an opening whose axis is inclined with respect to the axis of the shank, and the toolpost is held in the opening, the said post havlng means for supporting a tool in such manner that the axis of the tool may take a variety of positions with respect to the axis of the holder.
In using the tool holder, the tool 12 may be arranged in any desired positlon with re- When the set screw 9 opening of the shank, to turn the tool at any des1red angle with respect the shank, and when the set screw tightened, the tool is clamped firmly in place and the post is also clamped in adjusted position with re spect to the holder.
When it is desired to remove the tool it is onlynecessary to loosen the set screw 10.
The tooln'ia" be then removed, and a new tool inserted. justed with respect to the shank, the tight ening of the set scre' will clamp both tool After the tool has been ad and post in adjusted position. The shank 1 may be placed in the tool hold-"- the lathe or other device with which is used.
I claim 1. A holder of the character specified,
comprising a shank having a transverse ing, said opening being adapted to receive opening at one end whose axis is perpena tool, and the said screw being adapted to dicular to the faces of the reduced end, a engage one face thereof, and a block in the tool post arranged Within the opening and slot and of greater length than the diameter 5 having at one end a head for engaging the of the opening of'the shank for engaging adjacent face of the shank to hold the tool the opposite face of the tool from the set from movement in the opposite direction, screw, said block havingjthe face adjacent said post having a transverse slot, and an into the shank curved longitudinally, and the ternally threaded longitudinal opening leadadjacent end of the shank opening being ing into the slot at the opposite end from counterbored.
the head, the slot of the post extending into 3. A holder of the character specified, the opening of the shank When the head is comprising a shank having a transverse in engagement with the opposite face of the opening and a tool post for engaging the shank, and the opposite end of the opening opening, said post having a head at one end of the shank from the head being counterfor engaging the adjacent face of the shank bored, a set screw threaded through the lonto limit the movement of the post through gitudinal opening of the shank, and a block the opening, the post having a transverse having one face plane to engage the opposlot intermediate its ends and extending into site face of the tool from the set screw an the opening of the shank when the post is having the opposite face curved longitudiin place in the opening, said post having a nally of the block to engage the counterlongitudinal internally threaded opening exbored portion of the opening. tending from the opposite end from the head I 2: A holder. of the character specified, into the slot, a set screw engaging the opencomprising a shank having a transverse ing, said opening being adapted to receive opening and a tool pose for engaging the a tool, and the said screw being adapted to opening, said post having a head at one end engage one-face thereof, and a block in the fOrengag lng the adjacent face of the shank slot and of greater length than the diameter to limit the movement of the post through of the opening of the shank for engaging the opening, the post having a transverse the opposite face of the tool from the set I slot intermediate its ends and extending into screw.
the opening of the shank .When the post is J 4 in place inthe opening, said post having a WILLIAM LUTHER HANE' longitudinal internally threaded opening ex- Witnesses: tending from the opposite end from the head MAMIE E. Fox,
