APPLICATION FILED MAR. 2, 1912.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HORACE GARCIE RICHARDSON, OF JOHNSON, MONTANA.
ATTACHMENT FOR HARNESS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HORACE Gr. RICHARD- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Johnson, in the county of Broadwater and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Harness, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements 1n harness, and has particular referencetoan attachment for harness known as a locking strap.
One object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character which will effectively prevent a horse kicking.
Another object is to provide a kicking strap of this character which when a horse attempts to kick, will pull on the front legs and effectively frustrate any ralsing of the hind legs.
These and other objects will be apparent from the following description, and with particular reference to the accompanylng drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device applied, a portion of a horse being shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device detached, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same.
Referring particularly to the drawing, it will be seen that the device comprises a pair of cuffs 1, adapted to be secured around the front legs of a horse, and 2 a similar pair of cuffs adapted to be secured around the hind legs of a horse. These cuffs are composed of a piece of leather 3, to the upper and lower edges of which and at their middle portions are secured, by sewing or otherwise, are the fastening straps 4. A protec tive lining 5, of suitable material, as felt or skin having wool thereon, is secured to the piece 3, and has one of its ends bifurcated as at 6, in the furcations of which are formed the transverse loops 7. The opposite ends of the lining extend to a considerable distance from the piece 8, and the perforated ends 8, of the straps 4c, are passed through the said loops 7, for the purpose of retaining the furcations in proper extended position, and prevent any rolling or rumpling up of the lining, when applied around the legs of the horse. It will, of course, be understood that the opposite ends of the straps A are provided with the usual buckles 9.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Application filed March 2, 1912.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Serial No. 681,290.
The above description of a cuff will suffice for all of them, as they are identical in construction, and as there are four in all, one is fastened around each of the legs of a horse.
Each of the pieces 4 has a loop 10 formed on the back thereof, and is adapted to retain therein a ring 11. Secured at its opposite ends to the rings of the front pair of cuffs, 1s a connecting strap 12, which passes through an opening in a metallic connecting link 13. This link has the upper and lower bars 14, and extending between and journaled therein are the roller pins 15 and 16, over the roller 15 of which the strap 12 is adapted to play. The rear pair of cufls are also provided with the rings 11, the strap 12, and the connecting link 13.
A strap 17, having a buckle 18 at one end and oppositely disposed loops 19 adjacent the buckle, is adapted to be passed through one of the links 13, through the other of the links, after first passing through one of the loops 19, and through the buckle, thus holding the front pair of cuffs the proper distance from the rear pair. By means of the buckle 18 the distance may be varied as desired.
The whole of the strap 17 is provided with a ring 20, which is adapted to play thereon, and a strap 21 is looped through said ring and adapted to be attached to the bellyband of the harness, to prevent the horse getting the feet tangled in the strap 17, which would otherwise hang down.
From the foregoing it will readily be seen that I have provided a simple kicking strap,
and one which will effectively prevent kicking, and also prevent the feet of a horse becoming tangled in any part thereof.
WVhat is claimed is:
A device of the class described comprising a pair of straps adapted at their ends for attachment each to the leg of a horse, a link-slidable on each of the straps, a connecting strap slidably engaged with the links and having its end portions adjustably con nected, a ring loosely encircling the connecting strap and an attaching strap connected with the ring.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
