GARMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 10, 1913.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Serial No. 760,296.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX Gowns, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Garment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garments, and has for its object, the provision of a combined coat and skirt of novel form.
The invention aims, among other objects to provide a novel garment of the type above described, in which the garment, at its front and at its back, is longitudinally continuous.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garment of the type described, which may be fashioned from a minimum of pieces and with a minimum waste of material.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of, garments of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combina tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 shows the in vention in front elevation; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation; Fig. 3 is a plan of one front section; Fig. 4 is a plan of one back section; Fig. 5 is a plan of one of the pieces which go to make up the side sections of the coat; and Fig. 6 is a plan of the piece which, cooperating with the piece shown in Fig. 5, completes the side section of the coat.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a. pair of front sections denoted by the numeral 1, each section 1 comprising an upright tongue 2 and a laterally extended gore 3.
The invention further includes a pair of back sections 4t each back section at comprising an upright tongue 5 and a laterally extended gore 6. The tongue 5 is offset slightly from one of the longitudinal edges of the back section 4, as indicated at 7. The upper portions of the outer longitudinal edges 8 of the tongues 5 are united to form the back seam 9 of the coat the offset portions 7 being overlapped upon each other as indicated at 10. Between the point 10 and the hem of the skirt the lower portions of the edges 8 may be secured together or may be left free, so that the skirt, at the will of the manufacturer may be closed or open at the back. The longitudinal edges 11 of the gores 3 and 6 are united to form the side seams 12 of the skirt. The upper edges let of the tongues 2 and 5 are united to form a portion 15 of the shoulder seam of the coat.
The invention further includes a pair of side sections, these side sections ordinarily being composite structures. Each side section comprises a front piece 16 and an auxiliary piece 17. The inner longitudinal edges 18 of the pieces 16 and 17 are united to form the side seam 19 of the coat. The upper edges 20 of the pieces 16 are united with portions of the upper edges 14 of the tongues 5 of the back sections 4., to form a continuation 21 of the shoulder seam. The edges 22 of the pieces 16 are united with the edges 23 of the tongues 2 of the front sections 1 to form the coat seam 24. The edges 25 of the pieces 17 unite with the edges 26 of the tongues 5 to form the coat seam 27. The lower edges 28 of the pieces 16 and 17 are united with the upper edges 29 of the gores 3 and 6 to form the transverse seams 30 which are located adjacent the sides of the garment near the waist line.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there is presented a garment which is of simple construction, and is fashioned from a minimum number of pieces. The garment at the front and back adjacent the median line, is continuous from top to bottom.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is A combined coat and skirt comprising a pair of front sections and a pair of back sections, extending unbrokenly from the shoulder of the garment to the hem thereof upon opposite sides of the median plane of the garment at the front and at the back of the garment, each section comprising an upright tongue and a laterally extended gore, the upper portions of the outer longitudinal edges of the tongues of the back sections being united to form the back seam of the coat and the longitudinal edges of the gores being united to form sides of the skirt; and a pair of side sections, the longitudinal edges of which are secured to the inner edges of the tongues of the front and back sections,
the lower edges of the side sections being secured to the upper edges of the gores of the front and back sections, the upper end edges of the front and back sections being secured together to form the shoulder seams,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my slgnal0 ture 1n the presence of two wltnesses. I
MAX COWVEN.
