Description

A. M. STOVBR.
CLOSURE FOR RECEPTAGLES.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 2.1911
Patented Feb. 17. 1914.
We vuzooeo ABABELLE ivr. s'rovnn, or NEVADA CITY, CALIFORNIA,
. CLOSURE FOR REGEPTACLES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A ABELLE Srovnn, a citizen of. the United States, residing at Nevada City, in the county of Nevada and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements. in Closures for Receptacles, of which the following is a specification. V V
This invention relates to closures for receptacles and. to one designed particularly for use upon vmilk bottles or the like, and has for anobject-to provide a closure of pliable material such as tin foil which may be ,se- T curely fitted to the bottle and which will adapt itself to any imperfections in the neck of the bottle .and which will form a protective seal therefor to eiiectively prevent the entrance of foreign matter or water into the bottle after the application of the closure thereto. v
the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the sev;
eral views :-Figure 1 is a vertical section through the bottle showing the application of the closure thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the closure. Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 1 showing a slightly modified form of the invention. 'Fig. 4 is a plan view of the modifiedform of the closure. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the bottle shown in Fig. 3.
The closure shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing comprises an inner layer of material 1 o wax paper or the like and an' outer layer of material 2 such as tin foil or other such pliable material which may be readily folded and securely confined to the neck and arranged thereon so as'to fill any imperfections'in the bottle neck and thereby positively prevent the entrance ofmoisture into the bottle after the attachment of the closure' thereto. The layer of material 1 is preferably of circular configuration, while the material 2 is preferably of, square configuration and considerably larger so that the material 1 is arranged wholly within the area of the material 2.
In practice,-the material 1 is adapted to be disposed in the neck of the bottle and to be engaged against the shoulder A, as shown in Fig. l of the drawingl- The materials 1 and 2are cemented together or otherwise suitablyheld toeach other. The marginal edges 1 of the material 2 are folded over the neck of.

the bottle, at 3, where it may be manipulated so as to .fill any cracks or other impel-fed tions OrvacancieS in'the neck of the bottle.
In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 3 to 5 inclusive, of the drawing, the outer piece of material 4 is substantially the same as the material 2 in the preferred form ofthe invention. The inner piece of mate-,
rial 5 is provided at one corner with a tear-- ing tab 6. The corner piece 7 of the material 4 extends slightly beyond the end of the tearing tab 6 so that the tab will be entirely.
concealed thereby, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing. In this form of the invention the closure :is applied to the bottle substantially in the same manner as that'described in the preferred form of the invention, care being exercised so as to impress the material at the sides of the tab 6. -This will indioate to the user of the bottle the exact location of the tearing tab, as illustrated at 8 .in Fig. 5 of the drawing. The user may thenrnutilate the outer material 4 of tin foil and grasp the tab 6 of the inner material 5. By
drawing the tab upwardly and moving thesame forwardly from the user the 'closure may be mutilated so as to permit of its being readily removed from the bottle.
1 claim:
As a new article of manufacture, a closure for bottles, comprising an inner sheet of 1mmally occupying a flat position and being extended beyond the marginal edges of the 3 inner material and being adapted to be exteriorly compressed by the d agon a ainst.
' the wallsof the neck of a. vessel, whereby to seal the joint between the vessel and the closure and to denote the position of the tab ot' the inner material, said outer material be- 1 ing adapted to lr, destroyed at the sides of the tab, whereby the tab can be grasped between the fingers to permit the closure to be removed from the vessel.
In testimonywhereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
I ARABELLE M. s'rovnn. Witnesses 'FRED SEARLS, MABEL FREEMAN.
