To all 11 /2 out it may oomrern lie it known that we, JOHN Evans, J1'., and JAMES Evans, both cit States, and residents of Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and improved Beltl astener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descri ion.
The invention relates to belt fasteners of the type in which a plate is provided with spaced lingers comprising, in general, the form of a comb plate, the fingers being designed to be passed through holes adjacentto the meeting ends of the belt, the free ends of the fingers having means for preventing the i r accidental withdrawal.
It is the usual practice to produce round holes in the belt by suitable punches or the like, and it a prime desidcratum that the holes be of such a character as to leave the maximum of material between the holes, so that. the belt may not be materially weal;- ened at this point; and a further desideratum is to provide a fastening means that will minimize the strain on that portion of the belt material between the holes.
An object of our invention is to provide a comb plate, and fingers so disposed relatively to each other that the plate will bear tlatwise against the belt adjacent to and in the rear of the belt holes so as to relieve the material of the belt between the holes from the wearing action of the plate. Another object is to give the free ends of the fingers such a formation as to permit them to be threaded through a small belt hole approximating in diameter the thickness of the lingers, so as to leave the maximum amount of material in the belt between the holes.
Further objects will appear from the more specific description hereinafter to be given in connection with the particular example given as a practical. embodiment of our invention.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The forward edge of the plate 11 advantageously is provided with additional projecting members 14: that extend a short distance between the fingers, and in practice, overlie the material of the belt between the holes 123, the forward ends of said members 1-1 terminating on a line be yond the said holes, the effect of which is to increase the pulling surface of the plate 11, and to further lessen the strain on the material between the holes.
The free ends of the fingers 10 are given an outward and downward ll'ltflillat'lflll to the curved body of the lingers, as at 15, and said members 15 are elongated so as to have considerable length. the forward ends being formed with a downward hook 16, which is of a less height than the members 15, the arrangementbeing such that the fingers may be passed through the belt holes, as 1.7, in the end 12 of the bolt. the belt holes, being of a diameter only slightly greater than the thickness of the material forming the fastener, said thickness being in practice, at least one eighth of an inch thick to give the required strength to maintain the bent form of the fingers without fiexure.
The reason thatthe fingers can be passed through comparatively small holes is that the hook 16, the portion 15, and the ad jacent portion of the body 1.0 are passed in succession through the holes.
In connection with free ends of the lingers we provide a separate plate 18, having holes 19 correspmiding in number with the fingers, and this plate has such a relation to the fingers as to lie flat-wise against the belt both forward and back of the holes 17 and present broad surfaces 20 between the holes to overlie the portion of the belt between the holes 17. The plate 18 lies at one edge under the members 15 of the tinge; and that portion of the said plate nearest the eeting edge of the plate overlies he ling s, clearly shown, the hook member 16 lying against the adjacentec of the plate 18.
By the novel formation of the lingers with the elongated parts 15 and the short hooks it the lingers can be threaded through the holes of the belt and those of the bearing plate 18, the members it and 15 passing in sueee sion through and over the plate.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 2 A belt fastener, comprising two flat plates, one of said plates having curved fingers ex tending therefrom, and the other plate having holes corresponding in position with the fingers of the first plate and having a transversely arranged fiat formation outside said holes to lie flat on the belt, the free ends of the mentioned fingers presenting two bends forming a flat outward extension, and a terminal, perpendicular, downward bend which forms the terminal of each linger, the said downward bends being of :1
less height than the mentioned flat members, thereby a ;l.apting the fingers to be passed through belt holes of a diameter approximately equaling the thickness of the material forming "the linger, the ClOf HVv'itl'Cl bends engaging the end edge of the mentioned fiat portion of the other plate and terminating in the same plane as the under side of the said other plate and the plate having the lingers being provided also with tlat members between the fingers and at the base of the latter, said members being in the plane of the plate and being spaced from the fingers, at the base of the latter.
