To all whom it may concern:
Be ibkno'wn that I, HOMER C. LA BATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of 6 Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registering Devices for Sheet-Feeding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a side register machines for transferring or delivering sheets of paper to a printing press, folding machine, ruling machine, or other machines employing or acting on sheets of paper, and it has for its object to provide a simple and effective mechanism of this character for alining or registering thesheets of paper so as to secure accurate results in the operation of the associated machine on the sheets delivered thereto by the feeding machine.
Another object of the invention is to provide suitable mechanism controlled by the registering mechanism for automatically ,tripping or throwing out of operation the associated machine, when no sheet is present, or in the event that the sheet is so far dislaced as not to be acted on 'by the side registering mechanism.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the accompanying specification.
The invention consists of the combinations, arrangements, and organizations of arts hereinafter particularly described and then pointed out in the appended claims.

The side register may be employed with' or adapted to any suitable or preferred machine designed to transfer sheets of paper to an associated machine, such as a printing press, folding machine, ruling machine, or other machine employing or operating on sheets of paper. For example, it may be employed with the sheet feeding machine shown in an application for United States Letters Patent filed by me March 8, 1904, Serial No. 197,083, in which the subject-matter of the present case, except the modification illustrated in Figs. 14 to 18 inclusive, was originally presented and then divided out and incorporated as part ofthe present case. The character and construction of the feeding machine with which my side register is associated is, however, not material.
To illustrate the present .embodiment of the invention I have shown the same in view showing the position of the gripper at Figs. 1, 2, 15 and 16 in connection with the delivery or rear end of a suitable feeding machine, a indicating the rear roller carrying the feeding tapes a the said roller being j ournaled at its ends in boxes or brackets a a carried by the side bars 'or rails a of the feeding machine. The sheets of paper pass from the rear end of the tapes (1 to a delivery device which may consist of fingers a which when the feeder is associated with a printing press project over the cylinder a thereof, certain of such fingers being pro vided with extensions a in position to be engaged by the press gages a as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The fingers a are mounted upon brackets a carried by a cross bar a which is secured at its ends to the brackets a a the brackets a being adjustablysecured to the cross bar as by means of set screws a The delivery fingers a are in substantially the same plane as the upper surface of the tapes a Tnstead'of the fingers a shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the delivery device may'consist of a plate or delivering board a secured at its ends to the side brackets, as shown in Fig. 16, such plate extending the width of the machine and occupying substantially the same position as the fingers a Associated with the feeding machine is suitable mechanism for registering the sides of the sheets so as to place the same as they pass from the tapes (B, in predetermined position for proper alinement with the cooperating part of the associated machine, such as the form of a printing press, for example. This side register, designated in general by the letter S, is shown in detail in Figs. 5, 8 to 13 inclusive, 15, 17 and 18, and comprises, generally, av gripping device adapted to engage the side edge of the sheet and move the same laterally to adjust it into its predetermined position. The side register is supported in any suitable manner preferably at a suitable distance from the rear of the feeder, as for example by the cross bar a (Fig. 2) and is so positioned upon such bar as to grip the paper according to the width of the stock employed.
The gripper comprises a body 8 mounted on the cross bar a and having a passage through which the said bar extends. The body 8 is intended to be adjustably mounted on the bar a to provide for adjustment of the side register, and to permit of its being readily moved and yet to prevent accidental 8 and engagingthe spring, as shown in. Fig.
displacement thereofin the operation of the register, as hereinafter described, it is held against movement as by a leaf spring 8 the ends of which engage the under face of the cross bar a. This spring is held in position by a yoke a on the bottom of the body and has its tension varied by means of a set screw a passing through the yoke 11. The body or block 8 is provided on its upper face with a longitudinal groove .9 (Fig. 5) in which slides a vertically disposed carrier comprising a plate 5- provided with a pair of horizontally disposed parallel jaws s, 8 suitably spaced and connected at their outer edges by a web 8 against which the paper is squared. The jaw s is preferably extended inwardly in order to provide a relativelylarge table to receive one edge of the sheets fromthe tapes, while the jaw a may be relatively short, as shown in Figs. 8 to 12. The jaws s, s are so disposed that theupper face of the jaw s is in the plane of the tapes or and in order to insure the sheet entering between the jaws they are arranged divergingly or flared outwardly toward the front end of the machine, as at s, as clearly'shown in Fig. 5. Pivotally mountedon the carrier 8 is a suitable gripper adapted to co-act with one of the jaws, as s", to grip the paper. This gripper 8 may be made in the form of a bell crank lever, as shown in Fig. 6, pivoted as at s on the carrier and having its upper 'arm provided with a hammer 8 which is movable through an aperture, shown in Fig. '8 in the lower jaw s to engage the upper jaw 8 its range of movement in the opposite direction being limited by a stop 8 fixed on the slide 8 in such position as to arrest. the finger when the face of the hammer is flush with or below the surface of the jaw 8. In practice I prefer to form these stops bymeans of the adjustable screws for the reason to be hereinafter stated. In order to prevent movement of the slide .9 until after the gripping finger has been rocked on its pivot togrip the sheet at the beginning of the return stroke of the register, the resistance to movement of the slide a is increased by means of a leaf spring 3 located in a chamber or recess a formed in the block 3 and adapted to hear at its ends against the face of the slide .9". To avoid wear of the slide 8 by the ends of the said spring, wear plates 8 are provided and retained in-position by pins 8 extending from the said plates and entering slots 8 in the ends of the spring,
I as shown in Figs. 7 and 13. The tension of the spring 8 may be adjusted by means of a set screw .9 which passes 'througl'i the wall of the block 8 and engages the said spring. In order to permit of the adjustment of the side register in accordance with the position of the form of'the press and the width of the sheets, the clip 8 is clamped to the rod by bolts 8. or other suitable means, and by loosening these securing bolts the side register may be adjusted to any desired position by overcoming the resistance of the spring 8 Preferably asscciatedwith the register is a gage plate 8 which is designed to be engaged by the sheet of paper at a point of predetermined alinement. is carried by a suitable inwardly extending arm 8 attached by suitable screws to the rear side of the block 8, as shown in Fig. 12, and extends vertically beyond the outer end of the said block, the jaws s, 8 being recessed at their outer edges as at 8 to permit the web 8 to move past the gage plate so that the latter prevents the sheet being carried out of register after being released'by the gripping finger and during the final movement of the jaws, and this gage is so located as to be engaged by the sheet simultaneously with the release of the latter by the gripping finger.

The spring 1) is shown as an expansion spring coiled about a stem p fixed on a plate 12 on the bracket aand passing freely through an aperture in a lugp on the slide, so as to react between the said plate and the lug. The spring holds the arm p in operative relation to the cam. The action of the side register is designed to be rapidly accomplished and to this end the recess p extends only a short distance in the cam which extends nearly the whole of the periphery of the disk to hold the register normally retracted and stationary. When the. recessminthe cam'" comes into alinem'ent with the arm, the
spring 9 moves the register operating rod 5" inwardly and the operation is then com-' pleted by the antifriction 'rollerp passing upon the cam 9 again so as to return the register. The plate F in its operative position occupies a vertical position in the path of the paper, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and is carried by a pair of arms f fixed to a rock-shaft f 'journaled at its ends in suitable bearings f carried by the brackets a a as shown in Fig. 1. The plate F is lowered through the medium of a suitably operated slide fflmounted on the bracket (1, to which is connected a link f also connected to a crank arm f fixed on the rock-shaft 7, as shown in Fig. 1. and is elevated by springs f coiled about the rock-shaft and anchored to the arms f and the bearings F.
In the operation'of the side register S the sheets carried by the tapes a enter between the jaws s, s, in position to be engaged by the web 8 preferably near the end of the inward movement of the carrier, it being ohvious, however, that the sheets will be enpress gages, which at this point in the operof the gripping finger 3 reacting against ation rest at their ends on extensions a of the fingers a of the delivery device, as shown in Fig. 3, arresting and gaging the sheet in the usual manner. As soon as the sheet has been arrested by the press gages'the recess in the cam 71 comes into register with the antifriction roller p permitting the spring 10" to expand and move the cam slide p rearwardly, and in the direction of the feathered arrow Fig. 4, so as to move the rod 8" in the direction of the arrow shown in Figs. 8 and 9. At the beginning of this movement the parts are in the positions shown in Fig. 8, with the gripping finger s depressed and resting against the stop This movement of the rod s,by reason the sto 8 causes the inward movement of the sli e 8 thereby thrusting the web 8 against the edge of the sheet between the jaws so as to move the sheet laterally and inwardly. The positions of the parts of the register at the inward limit of movement are shown in Fig. 9, with the gripping finger still resting against the stop 8. As soon as the rod .9", and consequently the register, reaches the limit of inward movement, such movement being in practice about an inch and a quarter, the slide p is by the action of the cam p returned. to its initial position, moving in the direction of the feather- .less arrow, Fig. 4, and returning the rod 8.
The initial movement of the rod 8 in this reverse or outward direction indicated by the arrow Figs. 10 and 11, causes the gripping fing er 8 to turn on its pivot s from the position shown in Fig. 9 to that illustrated in Fig. 10, or until it contacts with and is stopped by the upper jaw .9 thus providing a slight amount of lost motion be tween the rod s and the slide 8 When the finger is arrested by the upper jaw s the rod .9" still continuing its movement, the
said rod and the slide a are caused to move together until the end of the arm s contacts with the stop a, as shown in Fig. 11, and as the sheet was in the path of the hammer when the latter was rocked on its pivot the sheet is carried outwardly by the cooperation of the finger and the jaw 5 At the moment that the lower end of the finger contacts with the stop 8 in the reverse or outward movement of the slide a, the inher face of the web a is in alinement with the gage plate 3 at whichinstant the sheetis in its predetermined alined position. in order to now release the sheet from the grip of the parts, when the lower arm of the gripper engages the abutment 8 as shown inFig. 11, the finger is tripped out of engagement with the jaw s by being rocked in its pivot .9 by reason of the continued reverse or outward movement of the rod 8", during which movement the slide 8 continues its movement owing to the connection of the abutting finger with the two parts until it reaches the position shown in Fig. 8, which is the limit of the outward movement of the parts. The press gages are now moved out of the way and the sheet is taken by the grippers of the press cylins der, in the usual manner. The cam slot p defines the range of movement of the slide .9 and the abutments 8 s are adjusted to correspond with the range of movement provided for by the cam slot. These abutments are made adjustable in order to prevent overthrow or lostmotion due to wear of the parts.
Only one register S need be employed in order that the impressions on both sides of the sheets may register with each other in case the sheets are cut with accuracy so that the side edges are parallel. Under other conditions and in order to accommodate the machine to variations in stock, etc., a second register S is employed and located at the opposite side of the machine so as to register the sheets from the same side edge for the second impression as for the first impression. To secure the best results it is desirable to have the two side registers grip the sheet at the same point between its ends and the register Sis therefore preferably mounted on the cross bar a and. located at the side of the machine opposite to the register S, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The register S is of the same character, construction and operates in the same manner as the register S. The register S is operated by a rod 25, connected thereto in a manner correspondingto the rod 8" with the register S, and
block M. It is actuated by a pin entering a cam slot t formed in the cam slide 39 such cam slot t being disposed at an angle and reversely to the slot 29* so that the same mechanism for operatlng the register S may be employed for operating the-register S. As these registers are designed to be operated independently of each other, only one of them operating at any time, the connecting pin 27 is designed to be used with either slide, being removably inserted therein. Assuming that the sheets are to be alined by the register S at one edge in. male ing the impression on one side, the pin 3) is placed on the side 32' and the register 0perated in the manner already described. When the sheets have been run through the press they are turned over so that the same side edges before adjacent the register S are now disposed adjacent the register S. The pin p is then removed from the slide 77 throwing the register S out of operation and is inserted in the slide t thereby operating the register S. so that the sheets will be registered from the same side edges for the impression upon the other face and insure the impression upon both faces being in exact register.
The invention may be variously modified and embodied in other formst-han that heretofore described. For example, I show in Figs. 15 to 18, inclusive, a construction in which but one reciprocating rod is employed for actuating both side registers when two such registers are employed. The side registers, which are here designated. S and S except in the details hereinafter specified, are substantially the same as that heretofore described, and are likewise mounted to slide on a cross bar 0 attached at its ends to brackets c, 0 corresponding to the brackets (1?, a
In this construction I have shown a-slightlymodified form of gripping finger, comprising a bell crank lever d pivoted at al on the slide 8 the hammer designed to be moved into and out of engagement with the upper jaw s of the register, taking the form of a stem (Z movable in a sleeve 0Z on the slide 8 and throughan opening in the lower jaw sf, the said stem having an opening or slot into which extends the end of the upper arm of the lever d, as shown in Fig. 18. It is obvious that as the bell crank lever is rocked the stem will be raised or lowered to move into and out of engagement with the aw 8 Slidably mounted in'apertures (not shown) in .the brackets 0 0 is a cross rod (Z and the registers S S, are so constructed and arranged as to be capable of being connected or attached to this rod so that either may be thrown into and out of operation at will, depending upon from which side of the feeder the sheets are to be registered. This may be worked out in any suitable manner adapted to the attainment of the desired end. In the present instance each gripping finger d has pivoted thereto, as at d a link at the free end of which is provided with a hook (Z As shown in Figs. 2 and 16 the. side registers are made rights and lefts, and the links as shown in Fig. 15 extend inwardly when connected up for operation. This however is not material. Another feature of the invention is the utilization of the side registers for controlling suitable mechanism for throwingthe associated machine out of operation when no sheet is delivered'to the feeding machine or when a sheet is so far out of alinement as not to be acted on by the active side register. The parts are so arranged that under the circumstances mentioned the engagement of the gripping finger with the upper jaw s closes a circuit governing the mechanism for throwing the associated machine out of operation. To this end one side of a circuit including therein a battery a: and electromagnet n is connected to the frame vat of the feeding machine or otherwise is in electrical continuity with the gripping finger of the register, as shown in Fig. 19, while the other side is connected to a contact n, projecting through the upper jaw s of the side registering device but insulated therefrom by a non'conducting sleeve n (Fig. 9). The contact is in such position as to be engaged by the gripping finger when the latter is rocked on its pivot into its gripping position and no sheet is in position to be gripped thereby thus closing the circuit and energizing the electromagnet, it being understood that the sheets in the normal operation of the machine serve to insulate the gripping finger from the contact 71/. The mechanism governed by the electromagnet to throw the associated machine out of operation may be of any suitable or preferred character, such as the device for operating the cylinder tripping mechanism of a printing press shown and claimed in an application for patent filed by me December 18, 1903, Serial No. 185,625, and comprising generally the following mechanism (Figs. 19 and 20). Mounted in any suitable manneron the frame of the printing press is a shaft a which may be driven from the hil press. Adapted to be secured to the frame of the press is a bracket n provided with a groove in which moves a slide 11, having attached thereto a cable a adapted to actuate the means (not shown) for tripping the press. Pivoted to the slide a is a latch n having a hook n at the free end designed to be engaged-by the shoulder a of the dog n pivoted on a disk n fixed on the shaft 72 The dog n is held during a portion of the rotation of the disk in position to engage the latch '11, when the latter is released and moves into its active position, by a cam n. The cam n is rigid with a'n extension at of the bracket n and projects in the path on the inner end of the dog a. The latch is provided with a toe n which is engaged by the end of the armature n of the electromagnet a when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 20. Upon the energization of the magnets by the closing of the gripping finger 8 against the contact a the armature n is attracted releasing the latch n whose hook is then engaged by the shoulder a to move the slide a and trip the press. As soon as the cylinder has been tripped the dog a passes out of engagement with the cam and owing to the resistance of the latch and the rotation of the disk is turned on its pivot so as to release the shoulder n from the latch. The dog a after the disengagement of the latch n in the manner described, is returned to its normal or active positions by means of a spring a. In order to reset the latch hi, the disk 02 is provided with a cam a adapted to engage an antifriction roller n on thelatch menses and lift the latter so that its toe n is moved outof the path of the end of the armature n which, assuming the electromagnet to have been deenergized by the opening of the circuit by the retraction of the gripping finger, engages the toe to hold the latch in its inactive position ready to be released by the closing of the circuit again.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a sheet register, a reciprocating carrier, a gripper pivoted thereon, means to advance the carrier and gripper simultaneously, then move the gripper independently of the carrier and finally retract the carrier and gripper simultaneously, and an abutment engaged by the gripper during the retractive movement to move the same on its pivot.
2. In a sheet register, a reciprocating carrier having a jaw, a gripper having angularly disposed arms and pivoted at its angle to the carrier, means for advancing the carrier and gripper simultaneously, then rock the gripper on its pivot to move one of its arms into engagement with the jaw and finally retract the carrier and gripper simultaneously, and a stationary abutment which is engaged by the other arm during the retractive movement to rock the gripper on its pivot and release the sheet.
3. In a side register, a reciprocating carrier having a jaw, a stop on the carrier, a gripper movably mounted on the carrier, means to cause the gripper to re-act against the stop to move the carrier and gripper togather in one direction and then to move the gripper into engagement with the jaw to move the carrier and gripper simultaneously in the opposite direction, and an abutment to cooperate with the gripper on its retractive movement to release the sheet.
4. In a side register, a reciprocating carrier provided with an upper and a lower jaw, the latter having an aperture, a stop on the carrier, a gripper pivoted on the carrier and movable through the aperture of the lower jaw, a reciprocating connection piv oted to the gripper and adapted on its advance t9 force the gripper againstthe stop to advance the carrier and gripper and on its retraction to first rock the gripper on its pivot and into engagement with the upper jaw and then to retract the carrier and gripper, and an abutment to coiiperate with the gripper on its ret-ractive movement to release the sheet.
5. In a mechanism of the class described, the combination with a pair of oppositely disposed side registers each of which is provided with a gripper, of a reciprocating rod, a link associated with each register and adapted to detachably connect the gripper thereof to the rod, a lever for reciprocating the rod and'having a pair of lateral arms, and an operating rod having an a m associated with each of the said lateral arms and adapted to be detachably connected thereto.
6. In a sheet feeding machine, in combination with a frame provided with carrying tapes, a cross bar carried by the frame, a pair of registering devices mounted on the bar and each of which comprises a reciproeating carrier and a gripper mounted thereon, a reciprocating rod, and means associated with each register for detachably connecting the gripper of such register with the rod.
v7. In a sheet feeding machine, in combination with a frame provided with carrying tapes, a cross bar carried by the frame, a-
pair of registering devices mounted on the ar and each of which comprises a recipro-.
eating carrier and a gripper pivotally mounted thereon, areciprocating rod, a pin associated with each register and adjustably carried on the rod, and a link for detachably connecting each pin with the gripper of the associated register.
8. In a machine for feeding sheets of paper to an associated machine, the combination with a device for throwing the asso ciated machine out of operation, an electromagnet controlling the device,,of a registering device comprising a pair of jaws oneof which is movable, and electrical circuit connections between the jaws and the electromagnet, the movable jaw being movable into engagement with the other jaw to close the circuit when no sheet is delivered between the jaws.
9. In a machine for feeding sheets of paper to an associated machine, the combination with a device for throwing out of op eration the associated machine, an electromagnet controlling the device, of a registering device comprising a reciprocating carrier havin a jaw, a contact carried by but insulated om the jaw, 'a gripper pivoted to the carrier, means for moving the carrier paper to an associated machine, the combination with the device for throwing the'associated machine out of action, a slide, a latch pivoted on the slide, a rotatable element, means for. coupling the latch to the rotatable element, electromagnetically controlled means for holding the latch out of engagement with the coupling means, of a sheet registering device consisting of a reciprocating carrier having a stationary jaw, a contact carried by but insulated from the jaw, a gripping finger adapted to be moved into contact with the jaw-contact, and connections between the contact and the finger and the electromagnet.
11.
