GAS-LIGHTING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED STREET, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Gas-Lighting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to sparking means employed for the purpose of effecting the ignition of vapor issuing from a small orifice, whether such structure be designed as an ordinary gas burner for lighting purposes, or a burner for heating purposes.
In the present instance, the structure forming the subject of my invention has been applied as ameans for effecting ignition of gas burners employed for illuminating purposes.
These and other features of my invention are more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved lighting device, showing the same in place upon a gas burner; Fig. 2, is a front elevation of the same, the valve being closed as in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the position of the structure when the valve is open; Fig. 4, is a plan view of the structure, and Fig. 5, is an edge view of the same looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2.
My improved structure includes the use of sparking material, well-known commercially, which is brought into engagement with a steel designed to be forcibly contacted therewith so that a flash may be produced suflicient to ignite the gas flowing from the burner orifice. In the present instance, the sparking material, which may be in the form of a small rod, is mounted in a tubular recess formed in the part 1 of the structure; such tubular recess being provided with a suitable spring under tension of a cap 2, which is screwed onto a threaded. stem 3 carried by the part 1 to an extent sutficient to bring such sparking material into contact with an abrading steel wheel 4, suitably journaled on a pin 5 carried by the structure 1 and having a star wheel 6 whereby movement may be imparted thereto.
The movement of the star wheel and simultaneously therewith the abrading surface for engagement with the sparking material, is accomplished by the following Specification of Letters Patent.

means: The structure 1, having the usual burner tip 7, also carries the usual as valve which, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is in the closed position; and this valve is under the control of a lever 8, having a handle 9. This lever has a hook portion 10, and in Figs. 1 and 2, this hook portion is shown in proper position for engagement with operating parts, hereinafter described. The lever 8 is connected directly to the gas valve, and when operated it moves said valve; a downward movement of the handle 9 to operate said lever opening the valve. Normally, with the valve closed, the hooked end of the lever 8 lies in position for engagement with a hook 12, pivoted at 13, to an arm 14 journaled on the axis of the valve and which 'by such engagement with the hooked end of the lever may be moved with the latter. This movement brings said arm 14 into such position that a pin 15 carried by the hook 12 and movable in a slot 16 in said arm 14 is raised so as to engage one of the points of the star wheel when released. lVhen this release occurs, the arm 14 is forcibly returned by the action of a spring 17; one end of which may be connected to the pin on which the star wheel is journaled, while the other end is connected to a projection 18 forming part of the arm 14. Upon this forcible return of the arm 14, the hook 12 is carried back with its pin 15 in proper position to engage one of the points of the star wheel, forcibly turning the abrading wheel 4 a slight distance and effecting such engagement with the sparking material as to flash a line of sparks which, being directed upward, ignite the gas flowing from the burner tip; the valve having been opened prior to the sparking action. The slot or orifice in the tip through which the gas issues is turned toward the point of discharge of the sparks so that ignition will occur immediately after the sparking action.
To release the hook 12 from its engagement with the hooked end of the lever 8, the structure 1 is provided with a substantially horizontal surface 19 serving the function of a cam and upon which the pin 15 rides as it is being carried forward with the arm 14 and by such engagement releases the hook 12 from said lever 8. When this release occurs, the arm 14 is forcibly returned, and this action throws the hook 12 upward so that as it flies back, its pin 15 is in position for proper contact with one of the points of the star wheel l, thereby rotating the latter and effecting the desired sparking action. It will be understood, of course, that the pin is provided with an antifriction roller which is the part actually engaging the points of the star wheel.
The lever is preferably provided with a stop 20 which prevents its movement in a reverse direction greater than that indicated in the drawings, and a hand pull 21 may be connected to the handle 9 for convenience of operation.
It will be noted that the teeth of the abrading wheel are disposed at an angle as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and l, so that the spark will be directed toward the burner tip, which has its slot at an angle directed toward the sparking point.
The operating parts are below the tip and connected close to the main gas pipe so that no jar occurs during manipulation of the structure.
It will be noted that the valve may be partially closed as desired. after the burner is once lighted; the extent of movement of the lever 8 for this purpose being shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 3, indicating the position of said lever. Further movement of the lever 8 will not only close the valve but will also cause the hook 12 to drop into engagement with the hooked end of the lever S, ready for a fresh operation of the spark ing device to ignite the burner.
I claim:
1. In a gas lighting device, the combination of a tubular supporting member having a burner tip, a valve for said tubular memher, a lever for moving said valve, an arm journaled on the same axis as the valve, a hook member pivotally connected to said arm and lying normally in engagement with the lever, the arrangement being such that the arm may be moved by the lever through the intermediary of the hook member, means for releasing said hook member from its engagement with the lever, the latter having a hooked end, means for forcibly returning the arm to normal position when released from the lever, a body of sparking material disposed adjacent the burner tip, an abrading wheel in engagement there with, a rotatable member for effecting movement of said abrading wheel, and means carried by the hook member for turning said rotatable member when forcibly returned with the arm.
2. In a gas lighting device, the combination of a supporting member having a burner tip and a through opening for the passage of gas through said tip, a valve carried thereby, a lever for moving said valve, an arm journaled on the same axis as the valve, a hook member pivotally connected to said arm and lying normally in engagement with the lever, the arrangement being such that the arm may be moved by the lcver through the intermediary of the hook member, means for releasing said hook member from its engagement with the lever, the latter having a hooked end, means for forcibly returning the arm when released from the lever, a body of sparking material disposed adjacent the burner tip, an abrading wheel in engagement therewith, a retatable member for effecting movement of said abrading wheel, and a pin on the hook member engaging said rotatable member when forcibly returned with the arm.
3. In a gas lighting device, the combination of a supporting member having a burner tip and a through opening for the passage of gas, a valve for controlling the gas, a lever for moving said valve, an arm journaled on the same axis as the valve, a hook member pivotally connected. to said arm and lying normally in engagement with the lever, the latter havinga hooked end for engagement therewith, the arrangement being such that the arm may be moved by the lever through the intermediary of the hook member, means for releasing said hook member from its engagement with the hooked end of the lever, a spring for forcibly returning the arm. after such release, a body of sparking material disposed adjacent the burner tip, an abrading wheel in engagement therewith, a star wheel for effecting movement of said abrading wheel, and a pin on the hook member brought into engagement with said star wheel upon the return of the arm.
4. In a gas lighting device, the combination of a supporting member having a burner tip and a through opening for the passage of gas, a valve carried thereby, a lever for moving said valve, a body of spark ing material disposed adjacent the burner tip, an abrading wheel engaged therewith. a star wheel for effecting movement of said abrading wheel, and movable means brought into action by the movement of the valve controlling lever for operating said star wheel whereby the desired sparking action may be secured, said means including a pivotally mounted latch forming the coacting member whereby the movable means may be operated by the lever, such latch serving as the star wheel operating means when released upon complete movement of the lever.
5. In a gas lighting device, the combination of a supporting member having a burner tip and a through opening for the passage of gas, a valve carried thereby, a lever for moving said valve, a body of sparking material disposed adjacent the burner tip, an abrading wheel engaged therewith, a star wheel for effecting movement of said abrading wheel, a movable arm journaled on the same axis as said lever, a latch pivotally mounted on said arm and in operative engagement with said lever whereby the arm may be moved thereby, said latch being automatically released upon final movement of the lever, and a spring for forcibly returning said arm to its normal position, said latch being raised upon release from the lever into engagement with the star wheel and turning the latter as it is carried back by the arm.
6. In a gas lighting device, the combination of a supporting member having a burner tip and a through opening for the passage of gas through said tip, a valve carried thereby, a lever for moving said valve, an arm journaled on the same axis as the valve, a hook member pivotally connected to said arm and lying normally in engagement with the lever, the arrangement being such that the arm may be moved by the lever through the intermediary of the hook member, a cam for releasing said hook member from its engagement with the lever upon the full movement of the latter to open the valve, said lever having a hooked end, means for forcibly returning the arm when re leased from the lever, a body of sparking material disposed adjacent the burner tip, an abrading wheel in engagement therewith, a rotatable member for effecting movement of said abrading wheel, and a pin on the hook member raised into engagement with said rotatable member when forcibly returned with the arm.
7. In a gas lighting device, the combina tion of a supporting member having a burner tip and a through opening for the passage of gas, a valve carried thereby, a lever for moving said valve, a body of sparking material disposed adjacent the burner tip, an abrading wheel engaged therewith, a star wheel for effecting movement of said abrading wheel, and means including a spring controlled lever journaled on the same axis as the valve-controlling lever and a freely movable arm pivoted to said lever and having a projection; the movement of the valve-controlling lever to open the Valve serving to bring the star wheel turning means into action whereby the desired sparking may be secured.
8. In a gas lighting device, the combination of a supporting member having a burner tip and a through opening for the passage of gas, a valve carried thereby, a lever for moving said valve, a body of sparking material disposed adjacent the burner tip, an abrading wheel engaged therewith, a star wheel for efi'ecting movement of said abrading wheel, and means including a spring controlled lever journaled on the same axis as the valve-controlling lever and a freely movable arm pivoted to said lever and having a projection; the movement of the valve-controlling lever to open the valve serving to bring the star wheel turning means into action whereby the desired sparking may be secured, said abrading wheel having a toothed edge with teeth inclined toward the burner tip Whereby the spark will be directed in that direction.
