CONCRETE TILE FOR BUILDING CONSTRUCTION.
in Concrete Tiles for Building Construc-..
tion, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in signed especially for use in building walls, partitions, ceilings, etc. of building structures.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a building-tile of concrete for the construction of walls, which will be comparatively inexpensive of production and in the cost of material. By the utilization of the building-tiles a wall may be erected with greater rapidity than customary, and with much facility, and by the equipment of my special securing devices, the liability of cracking or breaking the tile is reduced to a minimum. The walls, in addition to being erected with facility, may also be dismantled with equal facility, without marring or destroying the tiles, and the same may be used a second time when desired.
My invention consists in certain novel features of constructionand combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the .accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed acording to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application a of the principles.
In the drawings: Figure 1 shows a wall, partly completed, and in perspective, built according to, and embodying the novel features of my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail perspective view of a tile built according to my invention. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing frame work upon which the concrete tile is built. Fig. t is a vertical transverse sectional view through the metallic frame of a tile. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view showing an additional form of sleeve by which the tiles are bolted to the frame upright.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention I employ concrete tiles that are made of suitable and customary material,

and molded in a machine for the purpose,
and of uniform size and shape. These tiles are built upon a metallic frame made of channel iron designated as a. whole by the numeral 2. The rectangular frame includes an end and bottom bar 2, an end and top bars 3-3 which provide a tongue and groove connection (see Fig. 4). bars of the frame a wire mesh 4 is secured and at suitable locations on the frame, preferably at the four corners thereof, I provide a sleeve or ferrule 5. These ferrules are fixed in suitable manner to the frame bars 2 or 3 and extend transversely of the frame with their ends projecting-beyond the two sides of the frame. These ferrules ac- Between the four i commodate securing bolts 8 which, by means eliminate the hole and make a flush and smooth surface over the bolt head. In Fig. 5, another form of sleeve is indicated at 10, and this sleeve is embedded in the concrete tile 7 and has a pair of lugs 11 projecting diametrically from the sleeve to hold the sleeve against turning in the concrete after the latter has dried.
In the structure that is illustrated as in course of erection in Fig. 1, the outerwall of a building is shown and the tiles are attnched to the uprights 8 by thebolts. As shown in Fig.4, it will be seen that the frame bars 2 provide a concave channel ing may be plastered or cemented up to around two sides of the tile, and it will be I pipe sections and are held securely in the metallic frame as shown in Fig. 3, but in some instances it may be necessary to employ the sleeve in a position where it is inconvenient or undesirable tolattach itto they metallic frame and in such case the sleeve with its lugs 11 is employed. By the use of this sleeve 10 the tile may be fastened or secured by the bolt 6 as desired, and the lugs 11 which are securely embedded in the con- 10 cl'ete material prevent turning of the sleeves. In the process of erecting a wall according to my invention, the first or lowest course of tile are laid, and in Fig. 1 it will be noted that each alternate tile is attached to a stud- 1 ding. The intermediate tiles are held in place bythe interlocking joints. The tile,
' with its sleeve, embedded therein, is located in proper position, and a hole is bored in the studding in alinement with the sleeve so that the bolt may be passed throughthe sleeve and hole. The 'nut is then applied at the end of the bolt and the bolt head is drawn tight against the mouth ,or head of the sleeve. It will be noted that the strain of attaching the bolt to the studding is taken up entirely between the bolt head and sleeve head at one end of the sleeve, and at the other end the sleeve is in direct contact with the studding. This arran ement prevents any strain on the -concrete ti e,'an d therefore eliminates the possibility of crackingor breaking the tile.
Ir some mstanoes the bolt may be screwed home in the studding and the nut eliminated if desired.
From the above description taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that I have provided a desirable instrumentality for performing the functions set forth as the objects and purposes of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination in a concrete tile formed on an open metallic frame comprising side and end bars with outer concave faces, and a wire screen located'in the frame, 4
of a sleeve extending transversely through the tile and formed with integral diametrically arranged securing lugs. l
2. A concrete buildin tile comprising an open rectangular metallic frame having one end and one side barformed of channel iron with the grooved face outward, and one end and one side bar of similar formation but of smaller dimension, wire mesh on the frame, and fastening sleeves formed with integral lugs embedded in the concrete.
Intestimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
