To all whom it may concern Be it known that- I, W'ILLIAM H. Woun- BERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city .of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrotype-Trimming Machines, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to trimming or finishing machines and more specifically to that class thereof designed especially for p e in finishing ofi' eleetrotypc blocks or the The object of my invention is the production of a machine of the -character mentioned through the medium o'which the edges` of an electrotype block may be effectually and expeditiously finished and squared. y
` A further object is the 'production of a machine as mentioned, which will be of durable and economical construction and etilcient in operation.
Other objects Will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention Will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which* Figure 1 a front elevation of a trimming machine, embodying my invention, F ig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, a portion of the construction being shown in section, Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section taken on line -m o' Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a section taken o n substantially line y--y of Fig. 1, and

The preferred `form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a' suitable base 1 provided with a horizontally disposed upper end portion 2. Arranged upon the upper end portion 2 are parallel guide bars 3 rigidly secured in position by.

In order to alleviate friction, the under side of the table 5 adjacent its longitudinal edges is provided with engaging members 5 for contact with the upper edges, of the guide bars 3, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, there being members' arranged at the extremities of said edges of said table and one medially of the extremities of each of saidV edges. Said table 5 is held against relative lateral movement by means of bars 6 and 7 which are secured upon the under side of said table for engagement against the inner or adjacent sides of the bars 3, as clearly shown in 'Fig'. 2. The engaging surfaces of said bars 6 and 7 are formed to correspond with the engaging portions of said table in order to'urther alleviate friction, as will be inderstood. rIhe bar 7 is adjustably secured to the table by means of bolts 8 which engage elongated transversely extending slots 9 provided in said bar, such arrangement, as will be understood, permitting of adjustment of said bar 7 toward and from the cor- -ange 12, which when the machine is in -use, serves as a stop against which the work is placed in order to position the same properly upon saidtable, the flange 12 being disposed at right angles to the direction of movement of said table. An adjust-able stop 13 is provided on the upper sideof said table 5 also for employment in roperly positioning the Work, said stop 13 being in slidable dove-tail connection Wlth a dove-tail slot 111 provided in the upper side of said table, as shown in the several views..
The stop 13 is secured in positions of adjustment by means of a thumb screw 15.
Arranged in operatlve proximity with one of the longitudinal edges of the table 5 is a gage consisting of a base member -or' support-ing bracket 16 which 1s secured r1g idly upon one side of one of the guide `bars 3, as clearly shown in Flgs. 1 and 5. Slidably mounted upon and in dove-tail connection with tbe member 16 is a carrier 17, ad-

justment of the carrier 17 relative to the member 16 being eifected by means of a screw 18. A set screw 19 serves to lock the member 17 in positions of adjustment,
Pivoted at 20 at the inner end of the member 17 is the gage or stop roper 21, against which the work is adapte tovabut in properly positioning the same for trimming by the cutter, as hereinafter described.
The work is rigidly held upon the table 5, during operation of the machine7 through the medium of a vertically movable clamping bar 22, the ends of said bar slidably engaging vertically extending slots 23 provided in the inner sides of bearing arms 24 arising from the table. Vertical adjustment of the clamping bar 22 is effected through the medium of eccentrics 25 which are fixed to a shaft 26 mounted at its extremities in the bearing members 24:. The eccentrics 25 are engaged by lingers 27 secured upon the upper edges of the bar .22 and so that when the shaft 26 is oseillated in order to correspondingly move the eccentrics 25, the bar 22 by reason of the connection thereof withsaid eccentrics established by the fingers 27 will be moved vertically. lVith this arrangement then by properly oscillating the shaft 26, the bar 22 may beforced downwardly into engagement with the work arranged uponv the tablein order to securely fasten the same thereon for engagement with the cutter member 7 as hereinafter described. jecting lever 28 is provided at one end of the shaft 26 for edecting manual oscillation thereof, said lever also affording a handlelor grip for manually reciprocating the tab e.
-Arranged adjacent one of the longitudinal ed es of thetable 5 is the cutter member which consists of a-.substantially rectangular cutter head 29 upon the sides of which are arranged t-he cutter blades 30 secured thereto by screws or other suitable fastening devices 30. The cutter member is arranged with its axis vertically disposed, the arbor 31 thereof being mounted between bearing arms 32 which project forwardly from the base plate 33 of the bearing bracket designed for the support of the cutter member, oil cups 32 being provided for lubrication. Said base plate 33 of the bearing bracket is slidably mounted in a channel 34 provided in the upper end portion 5 5 of a vertically extending supporting arm 35 which is secured, as shown, to the base 1.
Said bearing bracket is adjustably securedv to the supporting arm 35 by means of screws 36 which pass through elongated slots 37 provided in the bottom of the chan` nel 34 in order topermit of vertical movement of said bracket when said screws are released. vertical adjustment of the bearv ing bracket and hence of the cutter member G is edected by means of a screw 38 the up- Vper end of Which is threaded into the lower,- most of the bearing arms 32. The lower end of the 'screw 38 is rotatably mounted in stationary lugs 39, collars 40 carried by said.. screw and engaging against said lugs serving to hold said screw against relative longitudinal movement. With this arrangement it. will be seen that vertical adjustment of the bearing bracket and hencel of the cutter member carried thereby may be secured by rotating said screw, a hand wheel 41 being provided at the lower end thereof in order to facilitate rotation thereof in effecting this adjustment. With this arrangement 1t will be seen that during operation of the machine when one portion of the cuttermember becomes dulled, the latter may be readily and expeditiously adjusted in order to present a new sharp portion and so that the cutter blades need not be removed for sharpening until the entire cutting edge of each has become dull. This yprovision will be found of great advantage since it will result in the saving of considerable time and labor.
An electric motor 42 is mounted upon a supporting arm 43 projecting from the bearing bracket plate 33, said motor being operatively connected with the cutter j member through the medium of a suitable 95 clutch 44.
In operation the work which itis desired to trim is placed uponthe table 5 which at the commencement lof the operation is at one terminal of its reciprocatory movement iutjacent the gage member 2l. Said gage member isadjustcd as desired in order to serve vin the capacity of a gage or stop for the work arranged upon the table, the work being pressed against said stop in order to properly position the same for 'engagement by the cutter when the table is operated as hereinafter mentioned. When the work has been properly positioned through contact with said gage member the clamping bar 22 is lowered through downward oscillation of the lever 28, said bar when said lever is thusl oscillated being forced intov Ciampinov enga gement with the work to securely holgd the `same in position upon the table 5. ln order to more securely hold the work and in order that the edge trimmed shall be cut at right angles -to the adjacent edges of the work, the latter may be pressed against the flange 12 before being clamped in operative posi- 120 tion. After clamping of the work in po'sition as mentioned, the table is reciprocateol manually. Such reciprccation brings the work into contact with the cutter member which 'effects the trimming or cutting of the 125 adjacent edge of the work. After being trimmed the work is released and expeditiously removed by swinging the lever 28 again to its vertical position. By reason of tihe adjustability of the gage, the size of the cut may be varied as desired and by reason of the vertical adjustability of the cutter, in the event of one portion thereof becoming dull through operation, another sharp or fresh portion may be presented before it becomes necessary to remove the cut# ter blades for sharpening. Such vertical adj ustment of the cutter member is readily and easily effected through rotation of the hand wheel el after release of the cutter holder by retracting screws 36, as will be readily understood. By reason of the adjustable mountingof bar 7 at the under side fof the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I,
therefore, do not wish to be limited t0 the' precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such Variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A trimming machine of the class de scribed comprising a base; a table slidably mounted upon said-base; a rotary cutter member having its axis perpendicularly disposed witli respect to said table arrangedv adjacent one of the longitudinal edges of said table, said cutter member being adjustable longitudinally of its axis; and means for so adjusting said cutter member, substantially as described.

A trimming machine of the class described comprising a base; a horizontally disposed table slidably mounted upon said base; a rotary cutter member having its axis vertically dis osed arranged adjacent one of the longitudinal edges of said table, said cutter member beingvertically adjustable; means for vertically adjusting said 'jecting-ffrom sai cutter member; ,and means for locking said cutter member in positions of 'vertical adjustment, substantially as described.
4. A trimming machine of the class described comprising a base; a horizontally disposedptable slidably mounted upon said base; a rotary cutter memben having its a'xis vertically disposed arranged for ver-V tical adjustment adjacent one of the lonvitudinal edges of said table; a screw for vertically adjusting said cutter member; and means for locking said cutter member in positions of vertical adjustment, substantial'ly as described. l

A trimming machine of the class described comprising a base; a work holding table mounted for horizontal sliding upon said base; an elongated rotary cutter member having its axis vertically disposed arranged for vertical adjustment adjacenty one of the longitudinal Aedges of said table; and means for vertically adjusting said cutter member, substantially, as described.

A trimming machine of the class described comprising a base; a table mounted for horizontal sliding upon said base; an elongated rotary cutter member having its axis vertically disposed arranged for vertical adjustment adjacent onevof the' longitudinal edges of said table, said cutter member comprising al cutter head; a plurality of elongated blades arranged upon said head parallel. with the axis thereof.; and means for vertically adjusting said cutter head, substantiallyas described.

A trimming machine of the class described comprising albase; a table slidably mounted upon said base; a rotary cutter 'member having its axis vertically disposed arranged adjacent one of the longitudinal edges of said table; a 'vertically adjustable bearing bracket in which said cutter mem# b/er is mounted; and means vfor locking said bearing bracket positions of vertical adjustment, substantially as described.
9. trimming machine of the class .described comprising a base; a table slidably mounted upon said base; a rotary-@cutter having its axis vertically disposed arranged adjacent one of the longitudinalv edges of saidtable; a vertically adjustable bearing bracket in which said cutter member is mounted; a supporting arm upwardly probase upon which said bearing bracket is adjustably mounted; a screw for vertically .adjusting said bearing Wr l v channel of which said bearing is slidably mounted; a screw for adjust-ing said bearing bracket in said channel; and meansfor lock ing said bearing bracketin posit-ions of adj ustment, substantially as described.

A ltrimming machine of the class described comprising a base; a table slidably mounted upon said base; a' rotary cutter member having is axis vertically disposed arranged adjacent one of the longitudinal edges of said table; la vertically movable clamping: bar arranged above saidtable adjacent said edge thereof; and manually operable eentrics for actuating said clampr ing bar, substantially as described.

In a trimming machine of the class described, a base; parallel guide bars at the upper side of said base; a table slidablymounted upon said bars; and means on said table engaging against theI sides ofi said guide bars for preventing relative lateral movement of said table, said means being adjustable relative to said guide bars, substantially as described.

In a trimming machine of the class l described, a base; parallel guide bars. at the maestra upper side of said base; a table slidably mounted upon said bars; and bars on the under side of said tablerengaging against the sides of said guide bars for' preventing relative lateral movement of said table, one of said bars being adjustably fastened to said table for adjustment toward and from the corresponding guide bar, substantially as described.

A trimming machine of the class described comprising a base; atable slidably mounted upon said base; a gage arranged in operative relation with said table; clamping means on said table for temporarily holding the Work thereon; and a rotary cutter member having its axis vertically disposed arranged for vertical adjustment adjacent one of the longitudinal edges of said table, substantially as described.

A trimming machine of the class described comprising a base; a table slidably mounted upon sald base; a rotaryl cutter member having its axis vertically disposed arranged adjacent one of the longitudinal edges off said table; a vertically movable clamping bar arranged above said table adjacent said edge thereof; eccentrlcs for actuating said clamping bar; and a lever for oscillating said eccentrics and whereby said table may be manually reciprocated, substantially as described.
