Description

O. NILSON.
HOOK.
APPLICATION FILED 11mm, 1912.

aktomuq COLUMBIA- PLANOGRAPH C0.. WASHINGTON, D. C.
. UNTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSCAR NILSON, OF ST. REG-IS, MONTANA.
HODK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OSCAR NILSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at St. ltegis, county of Missoula, and State of Montana, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hoisting hooks, and the object of my invention is to provide an improved hook of the class mentioned which shall safely hold the load while the same is being removed and which may be readily operated to quickly release the load when desired.
A further object of my invention is to provide improved means in a device of the class mentioned for relieving the strain on the movable jaw While supporting the load.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character under consideration in which the retaining and releasing mechanism shall be incased but readily accessible.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hoisting hook embodying my invention in its preferred form, Fig. 2 is a similar view with the side plate removed, and Fig- 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the movable jaw released.
Referring now to the drawings 1 indicates the body of the device which is preferably a single casting or forging and substantially L-shape. The body comprises a substan tially vertical portion 2 and a horizontal ofi-set lower portion 8, the end of which is bifurcated as at 4: forming a pair of lugs which are perforated to receive a transversely extending bolt 5.
6 indicates the movable jaw, which in operative posit-ion lies substantially parallel with the body portion 2, and which is provided at its normally lower end with an ear 7 pivotally mounted upon the bolt 5 between the lugs 4. The lower edge 8 of the movable jaw 6 fits snugly against and rests upon the upper portion of the part 3 to relieve the bolt 5 of a large portion of the strain due to the weight of the load. Adja cent its upper end the jaw 6 is provided with an ofi-set lug or tongue 9 which fits snugly Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 5, 1912.

Serial No. 701.777.
within a recess 10 formed in the portion 2 of the body, and the lower face of the tongue 9 and the cooperating wall of the recess are substantially horizontal, whereby the jaw (3 is relieved of a large portion of the strain and is in a large measure protected. The outer upper end of the jaw 6 is provided with an upwardly extending projection 11 which, with the substantially horizontal upper end 12 of the jaw and the adjacent portion of the body, forms a hook proper 13 for the engagement with the chain or cable 14. attached to the load.
15 indicates an eye at the upper end of the body 1 for the attachment of the lifting chain or cable 16.
The portion 2 of the body is provided with a recess or chamber 17 in which is pivotally mounted as at 18 a dog or latch 19. The outer end of the dog is formed with an inclined or angularly disposed face provided with a plurality of depending teeth or detents 20 and the inner edge of the jaw 6 is provided with a corresponding number of downwardly extending recesses or notches 21 to receive said detents. 22 indicates a spring normally holding said dog in de pressed position to engage the jaw 6. Connected to the dog 19 is a pin or link 23 which extends through an aperture in the back of the hook and provided with an eye 241: to which is secured an operating cord 25. It is obvious that by pulling on the cord 25 the jaw 6 will be released. The recess 17 and contained mechanism are covered by a plate 26 secured to the side of the body 1 as shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of the device is obvious and does not need detailed description.
To give access to the chamber 17 the plate 26 is removable.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a hoisting hook, a substantially L- shaped body comprising a vertical portion and a subtsantially horizontal lower portion, said lower portion being bifurcated for the major portion of its length to form a pair of lugs and a pair of horizontally disposed shoulders, a movable jaw provided with a depending ear pivotally mounted be tween said lug, a pair of shoulders upon said lug to rest upon said first named shoulders when said jaw is in vertical position,
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence'of tWo subscribing witnesses.
OSCAR NELSON.
the opposite end of said jaw being formed to engage and wholly support a load, a laterally extending tongue on said jaw adjacent its upper end, said body portion being provided with a recess to receive said tongue, and retaining and releasing means for said jaw, substantially as described.
