HARRY A. HENDREN, OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINED LATCH AND LOCK.
a sence.
To all whom i/; may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. HENDREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Latches and Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined latch and lock and has particular reference to a device of this character which is well adapt ed to be used in connection with screen doors, but is of course not solely restricted to this use.
An important object of this invention is to provide an apparatus of the above men tioned character, which is simple in construction, compact and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of this in vention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side view of one member of the apparatus, the covering plate being removed, and, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the entire apparatus, one member of the same being shown in horizontal section and the other in elevation.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 3 designates a door jamb and the numeral 1 a door, such as a screen door or the like.
The stationary part of the apparatus comprises main plates or body portions 5, which are mounted within a recess 6 cut in the door jamb 3, to be flush with the outer surface thereof. These main plates or body portions are rigidly connected with the jamb 3 by means of screws 7 or the like.
he main plates or body portions 5 are provided with registering horizontal recesses or chambers 8, within which is mounted a movable or reciprocatory bolt locking element 9, as shown. This bolt locking element 9 is provided with a forwardly extending reduced portion or neck 10, carrying a depending tooth 11, as shown. This tooth is adapted to be moved into and out of a transverse opening 12, which extends entirely through the main plates'5 and leads Specification of Letters Patent.

into a recess or chamber 13 formed in the material of the door jamb 8, as shown.
Any suitable means may be employed to reciprocate or move the bolt locking element 9. As an illustration of suitable means for this purpose, I have shown a key 1 1, which passes through a stop plate 15 and extends into an elliptical opening 16 formed through the element 9, as shown. This key is provided with a laterally extending finger 17, to slidably engage the wall of the elliptical opening 16. It is obvious that by turning the key 1 1, the element 9 may be moved longitudinally in either direction, as desired. The stop plate 15 is held in place by the screws 7. This stop plate 15 serves as a stop to positively limit the inward or closing movement of the door. The key 14: is turned by a handle 18 or the like, rigidly connected with the outer ends thereof.
The door 4 is provided with a recess 19, for receiving a casing 20 included in the co-acting movable part of the apparatus. Mounted to reciprocate within this casing is a bolt 21, having one side 22 beveled for engagement with the beveled end 23 of the main plates 5, as shown. The bolt 21 'is moved outwardly by a coil spring 24, as shown. The casing 20 is provided with oppositely arranged elongated slots 24, for receiving a transverse pin 25, rigidly connected with the bolt 21. This transverse pin 25 extends in opposite directions beyond the door 4, and operate within slots 25 formed through plates 26 which are suitably attached to the door, whereby the pin 25 may be employed to move the bolt 22 from the inside and outside of the door. The bolt 21 is provided near its free end with an opening or recess 26, for receiving the tooth 11, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows. Vhen the bolt locking element 9 is removed to its outer most position so that the tooth 11 will not extend into the opening 12, the 1301" 21 may be freely moved into and out of the opening 12, as is obvious. This bolt will then serve as a latch to normally hold the door closed but allowing the same to be opened upon the proper movement of the bolt. When it is desired to lock the door in its closed position, the bolt 21 being first disposed within the opening 12, the operator from the inside of the door, turns the handle 18 to move the bolt locking element 9 inwardly whereby the tooth 11 will fit within the opening or recess 26. It is thus seen that it is impossible to move the bolt 21 out of the opening 12 before the bolt locking element 9 is moved to release the same.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that certain changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim l. The combination with a casing to be mounted within an opening formed in a door adjacent the longitudinal edge thereof, of a reciprocatory bolt mounted therein and provided with a beveled head and having a recess formed upon one side thereof, a second casing adapted to be mounted within a recess formed upon the door jamb to be fiush with the surface thereof and having an opening formed therethrough for receiving the head of the bolt, a reciprocatory locking bolt mounted within the second named casing and provided with a reduced neck adapted to extend over one side of the bolt head and carrying a depending tooth to be moved into and out of the recess of the bolt head, and means to move the reciprocatory locking bolt.
2. The combination with a casing adapted to be mounted within an opening formed in a door adjacent the free longitudinal edge thereof, of a bolt mounted to reciprocate within the casing and provided at its outer end with a tapered head, a spring to move the bolt outwardly, a shifting element connected with the bolt and extending outwardly beyond the door upon bot-h sides thereof to be engaged by the operator, a second casing adapted to be mounted within a recess formed upon a door jamb to be flush with the outer surface thereof and having its forward end beveled to engage with the beveled end of the bolt head, said second named casing being formed in two longitudinal parts, a locking bolt slidably mounted within the second named casing and comprising a forwardly reduced neck passing over the bolt head which is adapted to pass through the transverse opening formed in the second named casing and carrying at its free end a depending tooth to enter a recess formed in one side of the bolt head, and means disposed upon the inner side of the door to effect the longitudinal movement of the locking bolt.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
