HINGE.
11.11.11. LOR'ING;
V APPLICATION FILED 111111.17, 1913. 1,085,620.
HELENE V. LORING, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
` HINGE.
To all whom it may concern 4Be it known that I, HELENE'V. A. Lonnie,
a citizen of the United States, and a resi.-
Adent of the city of Chicago, county of Cook,
and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinges, ot' which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hinges and more specifically toa hinge designed for use especially in conjunction with a dressing case having a sectional cover.
The object of my invention is the produc-- tion of a hinge as mentioned through the medium of which the sectio'ns of the cover .of a dressing case maybe soconnected as to permit of extension of certain-of the sections of the. cover from the main cover section and of angular adjustment. of said extensible sections. y
A further object is the production of a hinge of the. character mentioned which will ,be of durable and economical construction and eiicientin'use.' .A
Other objects w-ill appear hereinafter. 'The invention consists-inthe combina` .tions and arrangements of .paits .hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be bst'iinderstoo'd byv reference vto the accompanying drawing forming a part of' thisv specification, and in which,
Figure. 1 is a 'perspective view oia dressing ease, embodying my inventiointhe cover of the-ease being shown in open orv upright position, Fig. 2 is. a top plan view of the case, thecover being shown in closed position, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation ot one ofthe connecting members employed in. fthe connection of the extensible sections ot the casing'cove'r with the main cover. section, 'detached v.The preferred .for-mot' construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a cas.-
ing body 1 which is of any ordinary or preferred design. vThe. casing body 1 is o'pen at its upper side and islii'ovided with a swinging cover consisting of a main sect-ion 2 and extensible or adjustable end scctions 3, the main section -2 being hingcdly scoured at 2' with the casing body as shown The under sides of vthe cover sections are 'provided with mirrors as shown and when the capacity of looking glasses. In order to.

tions 3 being prevented.
Patented Feb. 3,1914. serial no.' 754,940.r
adapt the sections '3 for service in this capacity, it'- is of advantage to so connect the same with the main section 2 as to 'adapt the former to be extensibly and angularly adjusted since through' such adjustment of said sections a view may be obtained at any angle desired. Theconnection of each of the end sections 3 with the main section 2 which permits of this extension and angular adjustment of the sections 3, comprises plates vor leaves t which are secured by screws or other suitable securing devices to the back of the section 3- at substantially the center thereof and at .the back of the section 2 adjacent. the corresponding edge thereof.'
Carried b v each of the plates 4 is a cylindrical rod 5. v'Arranged intermediate the rods 5 is a link (3 the opposite. sides of which are. cylindrically formed. Connecting the opposite sides of the link 6 with the rods 5 are lazy-tong members 7. One of the two terminals at each end of each of the lazy-tong members 7 is slidably connected by means of., a loopV or strap S with the i'od '5 or link 6 as the case may be, the other of said terminals being. connected with said bar or link by means of a loop or strap v9 lwhich is held against .relative sliding, as clearly: shown in Fig. ,3. The members 8 and 9 however pivotally engage the rods .5 and opposite sides of linko so as to p'eijmit of horizontal pivotal adjustlmenti" |With 'this ari'aiigement. it will be seen' thatI the sections 3 are pivotally andv -with the loops or straps 9, against relative sliding upon therods 5 o r link G, in the eventof the mainv section 2 being elevated from the body l of'tlie case, the sections 3 will be carried thereby and supportcdin the same plane therewith, sagging of said seclVhile I have illustrated and described what. I'deein toabe. the preferred form of my invention, I- do not wish to be limited thereto', as there might. lic various changes in,thc details of construction and the arrangement of Vparts described without departing' from the spirit of the invention. Although l have. illustrated my hinge applied to a dressing case, it is understood that I do not limit myseli` to this use thereof, as the same may be used in conjunction with any other construction to which the same is applicable.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: c
1. The combination with a body having a movable cover comprising two sections, of means connecting said sections, said connecting" means comprising end members attached to said sections; an intermediate link; and lazy-tong members connecting said link with each of said end members, substantially 'as described.
2. The combination with a body having a movable cover comprising two sections, one of said sections being hingedly connected with said body; and a lazy-tong member pivotally and extensibly connecting the other of said sections with said first mentioned section, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a body having a movable cover comprising two sections, of means for pivotally and extensibly connenting said sections, said means comprising end members attached to said sections; an intei-,
mediate link; and lazy-tong members connectinor said link with each of said end members, the terminals of said lazy-tong members being pivotally connected with said link and said end members, substantially as described.
Il. The combination with a body having a movable cover comprising two sections, of-
means for pivotally and extensibly connecting said sections, said means comprising plates attached to said sections; bars carried by said plates; a link arranged intermediate said bars; and lazy-tong members connecting said link with each of said bars, the terminals of said lazy-tong members being pivotally connected with said link and said bars, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a body having a movable cover comprising two sections, of means for pivotally and lextensibly connect'- ing said sections, said means comprising end members attached to said sections; an intermediate link; and lazy-tong members connecting said link with each of said end `members, the two terminals at -each end orf each of said lazy-tong members pivotally engaging the corresponding link or end member, one oi said terminals slidably engaging the link or end member cooperating therewith, the other of said terminals being fixed against relative sliding movement,'sub
stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed `my name to this specication 4in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
