Be it known that I, FRANK Loivnn, a citizen oflthe United States, residing at Little Rock, :in the county of Pulaski and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mutilersgand l do hereby declare the following to be a t'ull, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to inutilers for use with internal combustion engines and contemplates an apparatus for reducing the noise and certain other disadvantages incident thereto. t
The principal object ot my invention is to provide a, muffler designed especially for hydrocarbon engines having means i'or reducing the back-pressure produced therein, which is caused by the expansion of the hot gases as theyesca pe from the cylinder ot' the engine.
Another object of my invention is to provide, in combination with the multler, a means for cooling the burned products oi" combustion, as well as the inutlier.
Another object of my invention is to pro-- vide a means combined with the inutiler tor f aiding in the expulsion of the wasted gases therefrom, thereby preventing the gases from being backed up in the nndllcr and choking the exhaust valves and conduits.

Referring' noiv to the drawings by nu morals of reference, representing correspending parts throughout the several tigures, l indicates a mutller comprising a cylindrical casing having secured at the lower end thereof, by rivets or other fastening means l, a closing head 9. provided with a centrally located opening 3 to'receive one end of nipple Ll which conducts the burned gases into the muilier from the exhaust pipe et leading from the cylinder of a gas engine (not shown). Surrounding the said cylindrical niutlier casing l and concentric therewith is a water jacket 5 consisting of a cylindrical shell or casing 6 having at the lower end thereof, a head or closure Ilalso provided with a centrally arranged opening 8 in alinenient with `the said opening 3 in the head of the member l, to receive the other end of the nipple 4 ivherehy the said gases are conveyed through the space ot channel 9 which received the cooling ivater. Suitable fastening means for either end ot the nipple 4 are provided, the saine consisting of Washers or nuts l() and lO, the latter being further secured'by a loc-k nul ll.
