Letters Patent No. 108,400, dated October 18, 1870; antedated October 1, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN DUMPlNG-CARS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EBIN 0. SMEED, of Lawrence, in the county of Douglas and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dump- Oar; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in dumping apparatus for railroad-cars, and consists in the application of dumping platforms on the top of the ordinary plat-form, provided with hoisting-chains attached to one side, and to drums at the topof strong posts, which drums are to be operated for winding up the said chains, to tilt the platforms by other chains wound thereon, and working down over guide-pulleys at; the side of the permanent platform, arranged for the chain to work to the engine to be operated by it.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car provided with my improved dumping apparatus, and
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same.
A is the platform of a car, and
B the dumping-platform.
The latter may or may not be hinged to the former, as shown at G; and at the other side chains D, connected to drums E on a shaft, 1 mounted in the topofthe posts G, are connected to raise it for dumping.
For turning the drum-shaft an operating-chaimH, is wound upon the large drum I, and conducted down over guide-pulleys K to the driving power, for which I propose to utilize the locomotive, and therefore arrange the guide-pulleys K for the chain to be turned in that direction.
For arresting the chain H, when the platform is raised high enough, I provide a rubber or other spring,
-J, for the chain to pass through, and place a stop, M,
on the chain, which, coming against the spring at the time of stopping, eases the shock of stopping.
The guide-pulleys are arrangedfor the chain to be conducted to an engine at either end.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- cnt-- 1. The combination, with the platform A of a car, of the tilting platform B, hinged to the other or not, and the hoisting-drums E and chains D, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the tilting platform 13, drums E and drum-shaft, of the hoisting-chain H, guide-pulleys K, spring J, and stop M, substantially as specified.
EBIN G. SMEED. Witnesses:
CHAS. HUGERING,
J. D. FINCHER.
