To all lwhom it may concern:
'Be it known that we, GEORGE M. CLARK and HENRY W. CLARK, citizens ofthe United States, residing at Ball Ground, in the county of Cherokee and State of Georgia,
' have invented certain new and useful Imprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements 'of parts which will be hereinafter -fully described,
shown-in the4 accompanying drawings and then' specically denedfin the appended claims.
7e illustrate our invention 'in the accompanying drawings, in' which Figure lis a'central sectional view through two couplers det-ached, and Fig. 2 is a view showing the couplers connected together and partially in longitudinal section along the line 22of Fig. 1.
Reference now being had to the details of the-drawings by letter, A designates a coupler head, two of the couplers being of similar construction, and B ,designates a fluid pressure pipe which communicates with a centralpassageway C leading through the coupler head. Said pipe has a coiled buf'- er spring l) mounted about' 'the same 'and adapted to take up vibrations and cushion the coupler heads whenthey are `coupled together. The coupler head is provided with a chambered portion E, and ,F is a valve which regulates the passage of the fluid through the pipe, and G -1s a lever .pivoted at sa-idpipe. Said `lever extends forwardly, through the chambered portion E and 1s ASpecification of VLetters Patent.

chambered portion of the head. The forward end of the said lever is inclined as atl?.
Each coupler hasn projection O upon its forward end which is beveled 'as ,atI O and each projection is adapted to contactwith an inclined or beveled portion oiA the lever for the purpose of throwing the latter outward against the tension of said coiled lspring and opi-ning the valve in the pipe. Each couplerhead has a detlecting wing R set atan inclination and is adapted to guide the two coupler heads when they come lto- `gether to be coupled.
T he central passageway which leads throughthe coupler head has a gasket T countersunken in a recessl at the i'orward.
end of the Coupler, the tivo gaskets' of the couplers being adapted to forni a tight joint when they come together to -be coupled. Bearing plates "l" are mounted upon each adjacent end of the coupler and about Vsaid gaskets. j
-The operation of our coupler will be readily understood and' is as follows z-lfhen the two coupler heads similarly equipped come together, thc projections with beveled portions each coming vin contact with a lever will'cause the saine to open the valve and the valves will be held open, thus mal:- ing a continuous passageway from one car to another and give a tight joint gaskets which come in ycontact with one another.
, lVhat we claim to be new is il. A i'luid pressure coupler torftrain serv-` ice pipes, comprising a coupling head with a passageway Hleading therethrough and a cl'ianibered portion `opening through the ends of the couplerhead, aservice pipe coinmuni ating with the passageway, a. valve in said pipe. 1a lever'pivoted upon a standard of said pipe and extending into thechanibered portion oif the head and connected to the 'forward end ofthe lever-belngbevelech a slottedl post 1uthe stem of said valve,
said chambered'portion of thehead through which said 4lever passes, a spring upon 'said post and hearing yieldingly against lever, and a beveled projection upon the coupler head, as vset forth. ,j l, Y 2 A tluidpressure coupler for train servcomprising a ycoupling head with a passageway leading therethrough and a chambered portion opening about the through the the.
ends 'of the cou ler head, a service pipe communicating wlth the passage\vay,avalve in said pipe having a stem projecting thro-ugh the latter, s aid stem being slotted, a standard upon the pipe, a lever pivoted thereto and passing through the aperture in said 'stein and extending into the chainbered portion of the head, a slotted post rising from the bottoni of the chainbered portion and through which said lever passes, the forward end of the lever being beveled, a
spring upon the post bearing against the leverfthe forward end of the head having a beveled projection, as set forth.
In testimony `whereof We hereunto aix our signatures in the presence of two Wit-` nesses. GEORGE M.CLARK.
