Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 3%, 1913.
7 Application filed October 15, 1912. Serial No. 725,794.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoHANNns PANCKE, merchant, a German subject, residing at No. 19 Kurfiirstenstrasse, Berlin, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Pencilsand other Utensils, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders for supporting pencils and other utensils and particularly to holders of the kind in which the utensil is carried by a helical spring or by another resilient means, such for instance, as an elastic cord or the like.
The invention essentially consists in the following particulars: The spring or the like carrying the utensil is sufficiently weak to allow it to be expanded to a multiple of its normal length, and it is connected with a suitable signaling device adapted to act whenever the limit of elasticity of the spring is exceeded on exerting a pull thereon. The value of the device is increased by the whole spring together with the utensil suspended therefrom being able to rotate on a vertical axis so that the utensil may be conveniently used within a large circumference around this axis.
The accompanying drawing illustrates examples of construction of the invention.
Figure 1 shows an elevation partly in section of one form of construction of a holder having a bell as its signaling device. Fig. 2 represents the upper portion of a holder provided with a sound tongue constituting the signaling device. Fig. 3 is a side view to Fig. 2, while Fig. 4 shows the upper portion of a holder adapted for a number of utensils.
According to Fig. 1 a signal bell 'is fixed on a post 1 so that it can turn horizontally on the vertical axis of the post. To the releasing lever 3 of this bell the helical spring spring 4 for one utensil is connected. A holder of this construction is thus adapted to carry a number of utensils. A. similar device may be provided by fitting to the releasing lever of the bell a disk serving for the attachment of a number of utensils.
The springs 4 are of such elasticity that they can be expanded say six times as much as their normal length. One is, therefore, able to remove the utensils, suspended from the springs, very far'from the post 1 with out the resistance of the springs disturbing the manipulation of the utensils. Whenever the limit of elasticity of the springs is exceeded one of the signaling devices enters into action, that is to say, with the example of construction shown in Fig. 1 the releasing lever 3 is moved so as to ring the bell 2,
while the arrangements according to Figs.
2, 3, and 4 produce the cracking noise in consequence of the sound tongues 6 being bent. Instead of the signaling devices described any other means of this kind may be adopted. As the signaling devices are rotatably mounted on the post 1, the springs 4 can be moved about the post together with the utensils, and this in conjunction with the resiliency of the springs enables the utensils to be used within a large circumference around the post. The signaling devices may, however, be mounted stationary on the post 1. The signaling devices may also be dispensed with, the springs or the like being attached directly to the post 1. Instead of the post 1 any other suitable supports or means may serve for the attachment of the springs or the like, such, for instance, as wall arms and similar devices.
Having thus described my invention, I declare that what I claim is:
1. In a holder for pencils and other utensils, a support, a signaling device disposed thereon, and elastic means attached to the said signaling device and means adapted to carry said utensils, these elastic means being capable of being expanded to a multiple of their normal length and caused to actuate the signaling device only when the elastic limit thereof is reached.
2. In a holder for pencils and other utensils, a support, a signaling device mounted thereon rotatably, and elastic means attached to the said signaling device and means adapted to carry the said utensils,
these elastic means being capable of being expanded to a multiple of their normal length and caused to actuate the signaling device only when the elastic limit thereof is 5 reached.
3. In a holder for pencils and other utensils a support, a sound tongue rotatably mounted on said support, elastic means attached to said sound tongue, and means 10 adapted to carry said utensils the elastic means being capable of being expanded to a multiple of its normal length.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 2 1th day of September, 1912, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. 15
J OHANNES PANCKE.
