PRINTING-CYLINDER.
"Specification of Letters EPatent.
Patented Dec. 30, 1913.
Application 111ed.December31, 1910. Serial No. 600,364.
printing cylinders of newspaper and other printing machines, printing directly from engraved plates or .engravedxicylinders also i to the printing cylinder-"of the'ofi'set press,
and other printing machine's, printing from a fiat or round surface, either from metal or some soft material, such as rubber, and either in black or color work.
My invention relates particularly to printing cylinders which consist of a supporting cylinder on which is placed and from which is removable the cylindrical printing tube, which latter may be of metal engraved or otherwise impressed exteriorly with the drawing or lettering, or of rubber or other soft material receivingthe impression from the transfer cylinder.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for placing and fixing the printing tube on and removing it from the supporting cylinder, and I attain the same by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafterdescribed and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawin forming part of this specification, in whic the same letters denote like-parts in both figures. a
Figure 1 is an end View of a printing cylinder embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detailed cross-section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.
In the drawings large 0 is the supporting and driving shaft of the printing cylinder. On the shaftO at points preferably just inside the opposite ends of the printing cylinder are fixed hubs D, on each'of which is formed or otherwise fixed diametrically opposite arms C, serving as guides, and at right angles to the arms C diametrically opposite radially adjustable arms E serving as brackets. The arms are, made adjustable in this instance by being formed each in two reversely threaded sections connected,
by adjusting screws B having turning handles-b and provided with lock nuts a a. On the outer adjustable sections of the arms E at each end of the cylinder are fixed the corresponding ends of the opposite semi-cylindrical segments A A forming the supporting cylinder. The opposing edges of the two semi-cylinders A A rest and play toward and from each other circumferentially on the concentric outer edges of the respective guide arms C, as the arms E carrying said semi-cylinders are adjusted radially by means of the screws B.
The cylindrical printing tube F before described is made to slip loosely over the supporting cylinder when the semi-cylinders A A are brought together so that their opposing edges meet. The screws B are then turne to separate the segments A A until the printing tube F is tightly bound and fixed thereon and the lock nuts a'a are then turned to prevent the screws from working loose. In case theprinting tube F is the rubber or other soft tube of an offset or other press, suitably convexed keys P may be inserted as shown between the opposing edges of the segments A A to support the' soft tube therebetween. 'To remove the printing tube F from the supporting cylinder the lock nuts (1' a and the adjusting screws B are turned so as to draw the segments A A to gether again and permit, the easy withdrawal of the printing tube.
It is evident that the number of segments of the supporting cylinder and the means for radially adjusting and locking the same within the printing tube may be varied without departing from my invention. 7
Having thus described my invention and the mode in which .I carry the same into practice I claim:
In combination with a cylindrical printing tube, an interior supporthaving four radially projecting spokes, each of two of said spokes having twosections, each section bored and tapped longitudinally, the
threads in one section running in the opposite direction to the threads in the other section of the same spoke, a screw engaging said sections provided with means for turning the same, whereby said sections may be extended and contracted, nuts upon each of said screws to lock each section in its extended or contracted position, each of the outer sections carrying a semi-cylindrical segment adapted to engage the interior of said tube, the outer ends of the other of said spokes providing support for the adjacent ends of said seml-cylindrical segments.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand the 20th dayof December 1910.
I ALBERT MARIE ETIENNE GRIGNARD. In presence ofe CLARENCE L. BURGE, LILIAN M. SMALL.
