Letters Patent No. 108,278, dated October 11, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN WORK-BOXES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent an'imaking pan ot the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
' 1 Be it known that I, JAMEs E. MARVEL, of Seaford, in the county of Sussex and in the State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improveniente in Ladies Work-Box; and do herebydeclare that the followingy is a full, clear, and exact description, thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.-

.In order to enable others skilled iu the art to which my invention appeitains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed dra-wing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view ofthe work-box, entire; and
Figure 2 isa View ot' a threaul-cntter attached to the box.

l The box A is, by a horizontal partition, divided into an upper and a lower compartment, in the 4latter one of which is a drawer, D. l
' The upper compartment is, by two vertical partitions, divided into a compartment, E, running along the front .of thebox its whole length, and two other compartments, G and H.
The drawer Dis4 locked by a slide, I, moving up and down through the horizontal partition, within the compartment G, and along the end ot' the box.
In the center of the lid B, on the inside, is a small n rirror, J, and to one side thereof, directly over the compartment H of t-hc box, lis attached a needlecase, K.
In the compartment His placed a cushion, L, lled On top of the lid B is a pin-cushion, M, shown in dotted lines in iig. 1*.
The lid, when thrown open, is held in an inclined position by means of a. strap, N, as shown.
In the compartment E of the box is a series of npright posts or pins, O O, upon which the spools ot cotton or silk are placed.
Opposite each post O, in the frontb side of the box,
passed.
Below said holes, on the front of the box, is sc- 4 cured a bar, I?, running horizontally the entire length ot' the box.
This bar is provided with a series of curved notches placed directly beneath the thread-holes, and in said notches are inserted knife-blades, a a., for cutting the thread.
The thread being passed into its notch on the bar ,1, is cut ofi` by the blade a.
The notches, with their blades, are further so con-l structed that when the thread is cut olf the ren1ainingend is jammed into and does not come out of theA notch until removed by force.
Having thus fully described my invention,
'What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is I 1. The arrangement of the box A, lidV B, drawer D, compartments E G H, slide I, mirror J, needle case K, cushions L M, spool-posts O O, corresponding thread holes and bar P, with cutters a a, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
