FENCE-POST.
Application filed. January 2, 1912, Serial No. 669,022.
Specification of Letters Patent.
filatentcd Dec. ii i), 1 913.
Renewed June 13, 1913. Serial No. 773,540.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that I, EDWARD H. Lnnmni, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crosby, in the county of Crow WVing, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fence posts and the primary object of the invention is to provide a simple form of post which can be cheaply manufactured and provided with .novel form of fastening means for wood or wire fences.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a fence post which may be constructed of angle metal and suitably reinforced if desired, the said post having a vertical slot having opposed corrugations 0r notches adapted for receiving a novel form of fastening element for vertical adjustment therein.
l/Vith the above and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain other coin binations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, it being a still further object of the invention to provide a device which will not be likely to get out of working order.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fence post having a series of wires forming a fence connected thereto by my improved coacting fastening means. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the fastening means for the fastening wires employed in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown my improved fence post 10, the same being formed of angle metal having a face portion 11 and end portions 12 extending rearwardly at an obtuse angle relative thereto throughout the height of the post and thus constituting reinforcing ribs or wings to prevent bending or breaking of the post. The lower face portion of the post is provided with a central vertical slot 13 through which any form of anchoring means may be secured and the upper portion of the post is provided with a central vertical slot 14 having a plurality of opposed notches or corrugations 15 in its vertical edge walls adapted to coact with novel form of fastening means for securing fence wires 16 to the post. These fastening means or members each comprise a section of resilient metal having an approximately T-shape and provided with an elongated head portion 17 which formed with a central fastening tongue 18 having opposed recesses 10 in its opposite edges adjacent to the head portion. In use, the head 17 is extended longitudinail y of the slot 114i and rotated so that the opposed edges of the tongue 18 will be disposed adjaccnt to the notches 1.5 outwardly thereof and the head will overlie the opening and engage the inner face of the portion 11 whereby the tongue 18 may be bent upwardly and inwardly to engage over the fence wire and through the slot to bind up- 'ardly at its free extremity with two of the opposed notches. This is due to the tendency of the members to open or bend to frictionally contact with the walls of said notches and with the head portion drawn against the inner face of the portion 11' said members will thus be securely held in position. One of the wing portions 12 is further provided with a plurality of vertically spaced openings 20 adapted to receive a further fastening means.
l. wish to have it understood that I may make such changes in the construction of the invention as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim, it being further submitted that the device under the statutes is protected for all desirable uses to which it may be put without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
I claim A. fence post comprising a section of metal having its ends bent at an angle relative thereto and having its face portion formed with a vertical opening having opposed colrugations and a wire fastening means co said means comprising a section of resilient frictionally held in position. 10 metal having an elongated head formed with In testimony whereof I aflix my signature,
a central tongue having opposed recesses ad in presence of two witnesses.
jacent its head portions, the said head being I EDVARD H. LEHRKE. adapted to be inserted through theslot and Witnesses:
turned to a horizontal position whereby said I F, A. LINDBERGH,
tongue may be rebent and engaged with a l HARRY P. NELSON.
operating with said slot and corrugations, pair of opposed notches to constitute a loop Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
