CHIMNEY-CLEANER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, Lawrence MOELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maquoketa, in the county of Jackson, State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Cleaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention is directed to improvements in devices for removing soot and ashes from chimneys.

The invention has for its object to so construct a device of this character that the same may be readily positioned in such respect to the chimney that the ashes and soot may be readily removed therefrom and deposited in a suitable receptacle.

With these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the chimney showing the device in place. Fig. 2 is a top plan view showing the scraper blade in the position assumed when being moved outwardly. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, showing the position assumed by the scraper when being returned to its operative position. Fig. 1 is a sectional view on line 4:1 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a chimney having the duct 2 opening thereinto.

The device comprises a trough 3 which is semi-circular in cross section, and is provided with a brace bar 1. The outer end of the trough 3 terminates in a tubular portion 5, and to the undersurface of which is connected a receptacle 7 for receiving the soot and ashes, said receptacle being removable. The outer end of the tubular portion 5 is provided with a closure head 8. A pair of rods 9 are provided, and have their inner ends connected to the brace bar 4 and their outer ends to the head 8, said rods being thus arranged in parallel relation. The scraper 10 comprises a plate 11, semi-circular in shape and having its straight edges 12 provided with inwardly directed flanges Specification of Letters Patent.

13, said flanges being provided with slots 14: which are disposed at right angles to the vertical slot 15 formed near the upper edge of the plate 11. An outwardly directed flange 16 is formed integral with the straight edge 12 of the scraper, and is provided with a slot 17 which communicates with a vertical slot 18 formed centrally of said scraper. Pivotally connected at its inner end to the rear surface of the plate 11 is a rod 19, said rod being of such length that the outer end thereof projects slightly beyond the outer surface of the head 8 when the scraper 11 is in the position as shown in Fig. 1, and is formed with a handle 20. Formed integral with the rod 19 is a hook 521, said hook being adapted for operation in the slots 17 and 18, as will be hereinafter described. The rods 9 are so arranged that they engage the slots 14 of the flanges 13 and slots 15 of the plate 11, and by the peculiar arrangement of said slots the scraper is permitted to tilt in one direction, but is prevented from moving upwardly when said scraper is being operated to remove the soot and ashes from the trough 3.

In Fig. 3 of the drawing, the scraper 10 is shown in a position assumed when the same is being moved inwardly, and at which time the said scraper is tilted and the rods 9 engage in the closed ends of the slots 14, and the hook 21 rests in the bottom of the slot 18. After the plate 11 has been moved in until the lower edge thereof engages the rear wall of the flue, continued pressure upon the rod 19 will cause the same to as sume a vertical position, and at which time the rods 9 will engage the bottoms of the slots 15, and the book 21 will engage the outer end of the slot 17 so that when the rod 19 is moved outwardly the plate 11 will remain in a vertical position, thus removing the soot and ashes from the trough 3 and into the tubular portion 5 so that the same will be deposited in the receptacle 7.
