To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, NononU Tnlnisrrinia, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at No. 13 Shicho-ine, Shinnakadori, )llakayaniashi, Japan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shuttles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to weaving and consists of an improved forni of shuttle and means for operating the same.
@he object of my invention `is to weave weighty and slippery wefts such. as rushes, strips of bamboo, wire, or the like and to keep the ends of the said wefts even.
Another object is to facilitate and cheapen the cost of t-he production of fabrics having wefts of the above described type.
These objects I attain in the following manner reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which; t
Figure l is a plan view of my `improved shuttle; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
As shown in Fig. 2, the board (A), with a plane surface, and the board (B), with a convexed surface, forni the body portion of the shuttle and are so engaged by the bolt (C) in their middle portion, that the both ends of the board (B), of which the elevated part acts as a fulcrum, may alternately rise up and fall down to make an opening or closing jaw at each end of the said body portion, and the boards (A) and (B) are made a little narrower in their breadth toward their ends, and in the inside portion near the end, a piece (D) of india-rubber or some other means of adding to friction is provided. Stop pieces E made of a soft material such as leather, are attached to the respective adjacent surfaces of the boards A and B at predetermined distances from both ends. The board B is grooved longitudinally along the middle of the lower sur-l face and this groove forms a guideway for a slider G. The slider is enlarged at each end' to forni shoulders H, H; the latter projecting outwardly from the narrow portions of the boards A and B. The slider Gr is provided at each end with antifriction rollers lt, I adapted to engage oppositely inclined grooves or cams in the portion or portions of either one or both of the boards A and B. So that if the slider G is held stationary and the body portion is moved back and forth, the cams will engage the respective antifriction rollers and the board B will rock to alternately move each end toward and awa-y from the board A. rlfhe slider (G) may be modified of course 1,in its construction as the case requires.

The shuttle is then picked again across the loom and carries the said latter weft thread therewith until the shoulders H on the opposite end of the slider Gr contacts with the said second stop and the inertia of the body portion causes the high portions of the cams adjacent. the closed end to engage their respective antifriction rollers and thereby separate the boards A and B at this end to release the weft thread just carried and to close the opposite end to clamp another weft to be carried across the loom in the opposite direction in a manner previously described.
The stop pieces ld serve, when the shuttle has stopped within a shuttle box, to prevent the weft being carried over too far by its own inertia as the said stop members form abutinents (as shown in Fig. 2) against which 'the end of the weft strikes. It will thus be seen that, as the stop pieces E can be placed at any desired distances from the ends of the shuttle, a fabric woven by the use of my invention will have the ends of the wetts even or in alinement. This latter feature renders my invention especially adaptable for making blinds, bamboo-strip screens or roller-screens in which the strips or reeds are of equal length and should have their ends in straight alinement. However, the stop pieces E may be dispensed with it it is so desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :r-
1. A shuttle for looms comprising a base section; a wett-gripping member pivoted to the base section; and an actuating member for the wett-gripping member movable independently of the base section, said actuating member having a portion arranged to strike and be arrested by a stop on the loom during the passage of the shuttle across the shuttle race, said actuating member having a portion adapted to move the weft-gripping member after the actuating member has been arrested by the stop.
2. A shuttle for a loom, comprising a base section; a gripping section rockably secured to the base section; and a longitudinally movable actuating member Jfor moving each end of the gripping section toward and away from the base section to respectively grip and release a wett; said actuating inember having a project-ion at each end arranged to strike a stop adjacent each end of the shuttle race, whereby the movement of the body of the shuttle will cause the jaws to be actuated to receive a weft at one end and to release a weft at the opposite end.
3. The combination in a shuttle for looms, of a body portion having two sections rockably secured together; an actuating member slidable within the body portion; cams formed within the body port-ion and adj acent each end; and cam-engaging means car ried by the actuating member, said member being placed to strike stops adjacent the shuttle race prior to the stopping of the said body portion, said cams alternately engaging the said latter means and thereby alternately separating respective adjacent ends of the sections and simultaneously moving together opposite ends of the sections.
4. The combination in a shuttle for looms of a body portion having two sections rockably secured together; an actuating' member slidable wit-hin the body portion; anti-friction rollers adjacent each end of the actuating member; and cams formed adjacent each end of the body portion; said actuating member being placed to strike stops adjacent the shuttle race prior to the stopping of the said body portion, said cams alternately engaging adjacent anti-friction rollers and thereby alternately separating respective adjacent ends of the sections and simultaneously moving together opposite ends of the sections.
5. A shuttle for looms comprising a base section; wett-gripping section mounted on the base section; an actuating member for the wett-gripping section; wett stops interposed between the weft-gripping section and arranged one adjacent each end of the weft gripping section; and frictional weft-gripping means adjacent each end of the base and the weft-gripping sections.
6. A shuttle for looms comprising a base section; a weft-gripping section mounted on the base section; an actuating member for the weft-gripping section; and a weft stop interposed between the base section and the weft-gripping section so as to be abutted by the weft.
7. A shuttle for looms comprising a base section; a wett-gripping section mounted on the base section; an actuating member for the weft-gripping section; and a weft stop thereon acting as an alining member for the ends of the wefts.
