BUTTON-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR W. STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Swanton, in the county of Franklin and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasten ers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in button fasteners, and is more partlcularly directed to the provision of a simple and inexpensive device which will effectively secure in place buttons worn on naval, military, or other uniforms, or other clothing where it is desirable to have the buttons readily removable therefrom.
A further object of my invention is the construction of a device of the character referred to which can be quickly adjusted through the eye of a button, or removed from such eye.
To these and other ends my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts the preferred form of which will be first described and then pointed out in the concluding claim.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention and in which like numerals indicate corresponding parts wherever the same occur, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating my improved fastener and a button through the eye of which the same is adapted to be threaded, the said parts being shown in separated relation. Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the fastening device compressed for insertion through the eye of the button or for withdrawal therefrom; Fig. 3 is a view of a button with my fastener inserted in holding position in the eye thereof.
4 indicates a button of the usual construction, such for instance as is used on military or naval uniforms, and provided with an eye 5.
6 designates the button fastening device which, as shown, is formed from a single piece of wire doubled at 7 and having a comparatively straight rearwardly extending section 8, disposed at a plane slightly lower Specification of Letters Patent.

than the opposed section and an oppositely disposed section 8 which is bowed out to form a hump 9, and beyond said hump with a hollow or depression 10, the free ends of the two sections being bent back upon themselves to form grasping loops 11. To insert the fastening device in the eye 5 of the button 4 the loops 11 are grasped by the thumb and forefinger and compressed toward each other when the sections 8 8 of the device will be brought together and the section 8 intermediate its ends caused to pass below the opposing section 8. Thus the depression 10 in the member 8 will be brought below the upper part of the eye 5 of the button 4, when the device may be threaded into or out of said eye until the hump 9 shall have passed therethrough, when the loops 11, 11 are released from the fingers, and the resiliency of the wire forming the device causes the parts 8 8 to spring apart, the hump 9 being then beyond the eye of the button and the depression 10 seated therein. The hump 9 prevents the retracting of the device and its accidental displacement, while the upwardly inclined portions of the two members beyond the depression 10, together with the loops 11 at the free ends of such portion, prevent further forward movement of the device through the eye 5.
The fastener as will be noted is thus easily and quickly inserted in place or removed therefrom, and when in place will effectively secure the button in its proper position.
I am aware that considerable variation is possible in the details of construction herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not intend to limit myself thereto, except as pointed out in the following claim, in which it is my intention to claim all the novelty inherent in the structure shown and described as broadly as the state of the art will permit. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is:
A button fastener composed of a single piece of wire bent intermediate its ends to form a rearwardly extending relatively ing bent to form eyes, for the purpose set straight section, and an opposed section bent forth. 10 intermediate its ends to form an outwardly In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature extending 0r hump portion, and an inwardly in presence of two witnesses.
bowed depressed portion adjacent to said ARTHUR W. STONE. hump, that portion of the opposed section Witnesses: 1 beyond said depressed portion being bent f C. J. IIART-ER,. i outwardly, the free ends of said sections be-V' H. S. HOFFMAN. l K
