HERMAN J. BOELTER, OF LITCHVILLE, NORTH DAKOTA.
COLTER-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 9,1913.
Application filed March 31, 1913. .Serial No. 758,019.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN J. Bomann, a citizen of the United States, of the town oft Litchvillc, in the State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Colter-Cleaners, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in Scrapers for roller colters and its object is to produce a device of this class that is adapted to be attached to the tines of the biturcated bar by which the colter is carried, and which is provided with adjustable cleaning or scraping surfaces adapted to engage either face of the colter as it rotates and remove any foreign substances adhering thereto.
NVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combina tion and arrangement of parts to be hereina't'ter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illus trated in the accoi'npanyii'ig drawing which forms a part of said specification and in whichj Figure l is a side elevation ot' my im proved colter cleaner in position. Fig. 2 is Fig. 3 is a plan of Fig. 2. Fig. 4l is a rear elevation. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4l.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
l is the colter and 2 its shaft journaled in the tines 8, 3.
4, 4 and 5, 5 are U-shaped braces, threaded on their extremities, which engage the tines 3, 3 to support thereupon the bifurcated shield G. Spacing blocks 7 disposed between the tines 3 and shield, within the braces, retain the latter in an adjusted position with relation to said tines. Secured to either side of the front face of the bifurcated shield by the braces il, t and 5, 5 are flexible metallic bands 8 which pass into the aperture formed by the bifurcation of said shield and engage a metallic strip 9 to which rubber 0r canvas pieces l0 are secured that comprise the trictional scraping surfaces that rest upon the Coulter as it rotates.
The rear 'face of the shield is formed with a pair of integral angular lips ll disposed in planes parallel to the plane of rotation of the colter and `to each oit' said lips a metallic plate 1Q is secured as at 13 by a rivet or other suitable fastening means and said fastening means also engages and supports a pressure spring 14: which presses against the strip 9 which in turn presses the scraper 10 against the colter cleaning the same as it rotates. Should lumps or chunks of clay or other foreign matter adhere to the colter and tail to be relnoved by the Scrapers at the first revolution of the colter the springs 14 will permit the strips 9 and Scrapers lO to adjust themselves to permit passage therebetween of said matter. The springs 14 positioned as illustrated in the drawings afford an independent adjustable scraper surface for each side of the colter face.
I/Vhat is claimed is 1. In a colter cleaner, the combiimtion with the colter tines, of a bifureated shield adjustably secured thereto, integral angular lips formed on said shield and disposed in planes parallel to the plane of rotation of the colter, a frictional scraper for each lateral tace of said colter, flexible metallic bands secured to said shield supporting said trictional. scrapers and springs carried by said lips for frictional engagement with the said scrapers.
2. In a colter cleaner the combination with the colter tines, of a biturcated shield, braces connecting said shield. and tines, spacing blocks disposed between said shield and tines, integral angular lips formed on said shield disposed in planes parallel to the plane oi rotation ot -the colter, frictional Scrapers i'or said colter, supporting means connecting said Scrapers and shield and flexible adjusting means connecting said lips and scrapers.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto atl'lXed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMAN J. BOELTER.
