To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. Unnion, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mendota, in the county of Putnam and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gearing for Stretchers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wire stretehers and has for its object the production of an etlicient device for stretching wire.
Another object of this invention is the reduction of a novel means for rotating the drum of the wire stretcher.
\Vith these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrai'igements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the acco1npanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding arts'in all figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of an improved wire stretcher in use. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3--3, Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is a sectional view of the winding drum. Fi 5 is a perspective view of the brace used in connection with the bearings for the worm gear. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the yoke that substantially holds the forward ends of the body of the stretcher together. Fig. 7 is a transverse section taken on line 9-9, Fig. 1.
Referring to the accompanying drawing by reference numerals, this wire stretcher consists of side plates 10 and 11 which have positioned intermediate their length a brace 12 and a bracing rod 13 adjacent their rear ends. A securing yoke 14- is secured to the front end of the sides of this wire stretching device to securely hold the front end of the wire stretcher together.
Mounted upon the axle 16 is a winding drum 15 which is provided with link receivingpockets 17 and has an integral gear wheel 18 positioned on one end. A spacing collar 19 is mounted upon the axle 16 between the integral gear wheel 18 and the inner face of the side bar 10 to hold the integral gear wheel 18 and the drum 15 in the desired position.
Secured to the intermediate brace 12 by an eye bolt 20 is a standard 21 which is made integrally with a cylindrical bearing 22. A shaft 23 passes through this hearing 22 and has on its outer end a worm gear 24 which is adapted to mesh with the integral gear wheel 18 of the winding drum 15. A brace is secured to the cylindrical bearing as shown at $26 and has an angle foot 27 at its lower end which has a securing means passing through and engaging the side bar 1.0. This brace holds the cylindrical bearing in a firm position thus keeping the worm gear 2 1 always in engagement with the teeth of the integral gear wheel 18. The standard 21 has its bottom end reduced as shown at 28 to form a shoulder 29 which shoulder fits snugly against the upper face of the intermediate bracing member 12. By this construction the cylindrical bearing 22 is held against any movement.
On the rear end portions and on their upper faces of the side plates 10 and 11 there are positioned bearings 29 and 30 which have an axle 31 passing through them. Mounted upon this axle 31 is a bevel gear 32 which isadapted to engage a gear wheel 33 which is placed upon the inner end of the shaft A handle 34; is mounted upon one end of the axle 31 to provide means for the rotation of the bevel gear 32.
In operation of this device a chain 35 is secured to the eye bolt 20 and has its free end secured to a tree or any convenient means, and a chain 36 engages the clamp of the wire fence to be stretched and has its free end in engagement with the drum 15. The device being new in position all that is necessary is to rotate the handle 3 1 which, of course, rotates the bevel gear 39, which winds the drum 15 by means of the gear wheel 83, the worm gear 2 1 and the integral gear wheel 18. As the drum is provided with the link receiving pockets 17 the links will fit snugly in these pockets, and will, of course, pull the wire toward the stretcher.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. and it is therefore not wished to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new. is
1. A device of the character described comprising side bars, bracing means connecting said side bars, a drum rotatably mounted between said side bars, said drum being provided at one end with an integral gear wheel, a standard secured to one of said bracing members, a bearing formed at the upper end of said standard, a shaft passing through said bearing and having a worm gear at its forward end, said worm gear meshing with the gear wheel of said drum, bracing means for said bearing for holding said worm gear in engagement with said gear wheel, and operating means secured to said side bars for rotating said shaft.
2. A device of the character described comprising a plurality of side bars, bracing members positioned between said side bars, a drum rotatably mounted between said side bars, an integral gear wheel formed at one end of said drum, an upright standard mounted upon one of said bracing members, a cylindrical bearing made integral with said standard at its upper end, a shaft passing through said cylindrical bearing and having a worm gear positioned at one end, a brace provided with an angle foot at its lower end, said angle foot engaging one of said side bars, said brace having its upper end bent so as to fit snugly against the outer face of said cylindrical bearing, operating means mounted upon the rear end portion of said side bars, a gear wheel mounted upon the rear end of said shaft mounted in said cylindrical bearing, said operating means rotating said worm gear by engagement with said gear wheel, said worm gear rotating said drum by means of its engagement with said integral gear wheel positioned at one end of said drum.
