J /cns' 74 Hg 3,, wve'mlcoz hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
JACOB R. MYERS, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HYDRAULIC ROTARY 'BIT AND HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1913.
Application filed April 25, 1913. Serial No. 788,029.
citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydraulic Rotary Bits and Holders; and I do such as will enable ot ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to well drilling and has special reference to a novel bit and holder for use in drilling oil and other wells.
The principal object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
A second object of the invention is to provide a novel form of bit and holder of the hollow type wherein water is used to removethe, bored material, the arrangement beingrsii'eh that the cutting edges of the bit are always kept clear.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in eneral of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved bit and holder the view being part in section. Fig. 2 is a view of the holder at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
The holder used in connection with this invention comprises a hollow cylindrical body portion 10 of less diameter than the hole to be drilled and terminating at its free end in a reduced inner-threaded neck portion 11. Across the lower end of the body portion 10, which is laterally cut away as at 12, is a diaphragm 1'3 and depending from this diaphragm 13 and integral therewith is a pair of jaws 14. One of these jaws 14 is provided with bolt receiving openings 15, bored smooth to receive the body of the bolt while the other jawhas an opening 16 alined therewith and threaded to receive the threaded ends of bolts 17. These threaded ends project through the jaw and on the projecting portion are mounted nuts 18 havmg their upper faces slotted as at 19 so that cotter pins 20 may extend through the bolts 17 and lie in the slots 19 thus reventing the nuts from loosening on the b0 ts.
The cutter blade comprises a flat portion 21 provided adjacent each end with a projectin flange 22 arcuate on its outer side and s iaped to construct a cutter edge 23. These flanges are disposed on opposite sides of the flat portion 21 and this flat portion is extended slightly beyond said flange to form other out edges 24 adapted to remove any slight inequality left by the cutter edges 23 The upper part of this bit has a cutting edge portion as can be seen by referring to Fig. 1 and from this parallel portion they taper inward and terminate at the bottom in the half diamond shaped bit 25.
In the diaphragm 13 there is formed a pair of water ports 26 which are in such position that they open close against the inside face of the respective flanges 22 and the jaws 14 are cut away as at 27 so that between each jaw and flange there is formed a channel 28.
The flattened portion 21 of the bit is provided with suitable openings for reception of the shanks of the bolt 17 and is received between the jaws 14 and held in position secured by said bolts.
In the operation the threaded end 11 is connected in the usual manner to the drill pipe and as the drill proceeds water is forced down through this pipe. This water will pass out through the ports 26 and by reason of the channel 28 and projecting flanges 22 below said channel will be forced downward along the cutter edge of the respective flange thereby keeping its edge clear at all times, the waste water passes up as shown by the arrows in Fig. 1.
There has thus been rovided a simple and efficient device of t e kind described and of the character specified.
It will be obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as come properly within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. The combination with a bit consisting of a plate of metal having oppositely directed flanges extending from opposite edges and sharpened to form cutting edges, said whereby said flanges are inclined inwardly;-
. plate having its; flange carrying edges taper-- ing-inwardly toward the ,pointoif the bit of the flanges to form channels adjacent the cutting edges said diaphragm having fluid ports at the upper ends of said channels, and means to hold said plate between saidv jaws.
2. A bit, consisting of a flat plate of metal having oppositely directed flanges extend- 15 ing from its opposite edges and sharpened. to form cutting edges, sald plate having its flange. carrying edges tapering inward towarduone end whereby said flanges are inclined. inwardly, said end being free from 20 fianges and sharpened to form a point.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in-the presence of two witnesses.
