INVALID BED-GOWN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2, 19113.
Application filed April 2, 1912. Serial No. 688,041.
To all 'whom 25 may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTHA E. HerenmsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Invalid Bed-Gowns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to wearing apparel, and it has special reference to a bed gown for invalids, which is made in such a manner that it can be readily removed from the patient while in a reclining position.
The garment herein set forth is specially designed for an invalid gown, the garment being made with the division lines in front and rear, so that the margins are at one side of the medial line in front of the garment, and at the other side of the medial line at the rear of the garment, the object being to make the garment so that it can be readily attached to a patient, and as readily re moved when the patient is in a recumbent position, as a slight turn of the invalid to one side will enable the attendant to put on one section, and with the rear margin tucked beneath the body, the patient, on being rolled back again slightly, will be in a position where the other section of the garment can be applied and attached to the other section, as will now be set forth in detail.
The accompanying d awing shows either a front or rear view of the separated sections of the garment, each section being provided with an arm member, l, and skirt portion, 2, with a circular cutaway portion 3, for the neck. The front portion of this section is cut away to form a vertical margin 4, which is to one side of the median line, and on this margin I place a row of buttons 5, or any other fastening device such as a tape or cords so that the fastening means will be adapted to engage with the margin of the other section of the gown. The rear portion of the gown has its marginal line extending over beyond the median line, as shown at 6, and is provided with hole 7 to receive the button of the section. It will thus be seen that the margin 6, of one section is adapted to overlap and be attached to the margin 4 of the other section,
and that shown sections are exactly equal 1n formation and outline and both are equipped with similarly formed fastening means. By virtue of the overlapping margin of each section, it is obvious that the garment may be readily applied to the patient and the same removed without greatly disturbing the patient, since the fastening devices can be readily reached and manipulated by slightly turning the patient to one side.
I am aware that it is not new to make a garment in two sections, but heretofore such garments were divided so that the margins of each section were in the medial line of the body, and such garments are exceedingly diilicult to apply to a helpless patient. To overcome this, the dividing line or margin is on one side of the medial line in front, and on the other side of the medial line in the rear. As both soi-tions are made exactly alike. there are no right or left sides or sections. so that one side is not a eoml'ilement to the ollier side, and in laundrying and sloring them for use, any two sections make a complete garment.
That I claim as new, is:
As a new article of manufacture, a garment comprising two similarly constructed reversible sections of substantially Ushape in cross sections, each section being provided with a sleeve at its upper end, the vertical marginal edges of these sectionsl lying at opposite sides of the vertical median line of the garment, the marginal edge of the wide side being adapted to eo-act with the marginal edge of the narrow sideofthe oppo site section, fastening devices along the marginal edge of the narrow side of the sections and cooperating :fastening devices along the marginal edges of the wide side of both seetions.
Signed at the city of Los Angeles county of Los Angeles State of California, this 17th day of February 1912, in the presence of witnesses.
MARTHA E. I-IUTCHINSON.
