4Letters. Patent No. 108,015, dated October 4, 1870.v
-*OPH l lMPacvElvi-ENUN MACHINES Fon scRAPlNc'cHAlR-BAcKs".
`TheSchedule referred to m these Letters Patent and making pari: of the same.
Be it known that I, ERA'strUsS. FRENCH, of Westminsten in the countypf Worcester and State of `lVIassachusctts, have inventedla new and useful Machine for scraping OhairfBacks and I do hereby declare that the following `is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had `to the accompanying drawing and tothe letters of reference marked %there0n.\` y y Y This invention. has for its object the production of y a machine adaptedfor scraping or Smoothingcharbacks or other similar articles, whichare sawed cut `1n the line of'a circle, and.consists mainly in so .ar-
ranging the knife or scraper of themachine that it is cnabledlto-'swing,in thearcfof a circle. 1t further consists,`also, infcombin'ing` with the knife,
lthusariang'ed, an `adjustable .block to. support the art Fgillcl represents a side `elevation of my improved machineyr i i Y i Figure 2,' an end elevation;4 and w :Figure 3,`a'crosssecti on, in perspective, showing the manner of `securing thevknife to the frame. "lo enable others skilled `in the art to make and use my inventioipl will'now proceed to describe fully itsV .construction and operation.4
-' `A` 'AL A represent a` frame, lwhich is provided with i suitable cross-beamsand uprights, and may be of any ,proper size andform.`
. :B 'I3' B represent standardathe former of which rise above the upper beams 'of the frame'A, while the latter extcndbelowthem, as clearly shown in the 'f UO represent `swingingframes, or they may be i solid'pieces of timber,- it preferred, which are pivoted at c c c"c., between theu'prights B B B2B' as shown,
and are provided with anopening,' b, and cross-barb', and have also attached theiet-o'the knives c2c?.
`'lhese knives are securedftothe cross-bars at; the
y i free ends of; the frames,iby"rneans of a bearing-plate,-A c,having suitable projections, asshown in fig. 3.
' This method ot'` attachment permits the knife to be readily adjusted, and also permits it to be `easily re- Amoved whenfit is desired to do' so forany purpose.
. D 1)'4 representA the supporting blocks, which are provided with suitable curvedrest-blocks for holding the chair-backs, or other articlesl to be opcratcdnpon.
Ihcse blocks D are pivoted at one end, as shown in fig. 1, andare .supported atV the other by means of connecting-rods d, the lower ends of which latter are attached to the foot-treadles d d'. l y.
It will be .observed that'by` the different arrange ment of the swinging-frames, one being located above ,the upper beams of the main frame, and the other below them, they are adapted to scrape both sides of the chair-back'.
he frame `C, having its knife extending outward from its cross-beam, is adapted to scrape off the inner Surface 'of the chair-back, while the frame C', having its knife extending inward from its cross-beam, is
adapted to scrape the outer surface ofthe chair-back.
These framesreceive their swinging motion from pitmeu connecting with disks vupon a revolving shaft.
'lhe operation is as follows: v
The machine is first set in mot-ion. The chair-.hack or otherarticle to be scraped is then placed upon the supporting-block, which naturally rests inthe position shown in 1i g. 1 that is, with its movingend depressed.v
'The first treadle is now operated, to force the 'block upv toward the knife, in which position it is held, while the article is scraped by the 'reciprocating action of the knife. i
InA practice, onel end of the back is usually scraped, and then it is turned to permit the other end to be operated upon. y l :By means of this machine, the Trough back, as it comes from the saw, is quickly smoothed and made ready for the sand-paperng process.`
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by `Lettersy Patent, is v 1. The vs,winging-frame C, constructed specifically as described, with its bars c"i and knife ci, asset forth.`
2. The machine described, consisting essentially of the frame A,-uprights B B B swinging-frames G C', provided with knives, operated as described, and
adjustable snpportngLblocks '1), when curved as described, for the purpose set forth.
ThisA specification signed and day ofv May, 1870. i
witnessed this 19th n. s. FRENCH.
