To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN D. GRAFING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olivet, in the county of Hutchinson and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and useful Gearing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful washing machine.
As one of the objects of the invention, it is the aim to provide a shaft to operate any suitable device and provided with a pinion, adapted to be engaged by an oscillatory rack member, for rocking the shaft.
One of the features of the invention is the provision of a link connection between the oscillatory member and an operating lever, for imparting an oscillatory movement to said member.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an adjustable guide member, which not only acts as a guide for the oscillatory member, but also constitutes means adapted to be adjusted to frictionally bear against the oscillatory member, to retard its movement, in case the operating lever is operated by automatic mechanical means instead of by hand power.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved washing machine constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail perspective view of the segmental rack bar 32, the gear 11 and the plate 42. Fig. 5 is a detail bottom plan view of the agitator showing parts in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a receptacle, in which the clothes and the washing fluid are placed. This receptacle is provided with a cover or closure member 2 having a reinforcing cleat 3 secured at 4: to its under surface.

Upon the upper surface of the cover or closure and extending centrally across its diameter is the base plate 4* of the bracket 5. Mounted in bearings 6, 7 and 8 of the cleat 3 and the closure, and the base plate 1*, and the transverse bar 9 of the bracket is a shaft 10. Keyed to the upper end of the shaft is a pinion 11, while the lower end of the shaft is constructed with a cylindrical enlargement, the circumference of which is constructed with an axially disposed elongated groove 12, opened at one end and closed at the lower end. An agitator 13 is mounted upon the enlargement of the shaft, and adapted to rotate therewith owing to a key 14 extending into the groove of the enlargement. It will be observed, however, the agitator, while rotating, may rise and fall accordingly. The agitator comprises two disk members 15 and 16 secured together as at 17. However, before the disks are secured together, the agitating pegs or projections 18 are inserted through the disk 16, so that their heads 18" are arranged between the disks, thereby holding the agitating pegs or projections securely in position. Also mounted upon the closure or cover is another bracket 20, disposed parallel with the bracket 5. Mount ed in bearings 21 and 22 of the brackets 5 and 20 is a shaft 23, on one end of which a gear 24: is mounted to rotate with the shaft, while upon the other end is an arm 25. The gear 24 meshes with a pinion 26, which rotates with the fly wheel 27, which is mounted loosely on the stub pin or shaft 28.
The bracket 5 is provided with an upgwardly projecting extension 29, from the upper extremity of which a stub pin 30 laterally projects, thereby forming a fulcrum or pivot for the segmental oscillatory member. 31 having a segment rack bar 32, the teeth of which mesh with the pinion 11, whereby as the oscillatory member is rocked motion will be imparted to the pinion 11, which in turn will transfer a rocking movement to the shaft 10.
The base plate 4 of the bracket 5 is formed with an extension 33, in which at 34: an operating lever 35 is pivoted. Connected to the operating lever 35 is a link 36, the end 37 of which is pivoted to a pin 38 of the arm 25 of the shaft 23, so that a rotary motion may be imparted to the shaft 23. The oscillatory member 31 is constructed with an arm 39, and the link 40 connects its extremity .the slot 43 and are threaded into the clo sure or cover, whereby the member or plate 42 may be adjustably secured to the cover or closure. This member or plate 42 is constructed with lugs 45 having notches 46, in
'iwhich the-segmental rack bar 32 of the oscillatory member 31 moves, so as to not only guide the rack bar, but to also guide and maintain the oscillatory member in its proper position. The lugs 45 are ofiset upwardly from the closure or cover, so that the rack bar will not engage the closure or cover during its movements.
If desired the member or plate 42 may be adjusted toward the rack bar 32 so as to frictionally engage the same in order to retard the oscillatory member in its movement.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a washing machine, a vertically disposed shaft, a pinion thereon, a bracket member in. which said shaft is mounted, a second shaftmounted in said bracket member having a fly wheel at one end and provided at the other end with an arm, said bracket member having an upwardly extending projection, a segmental oscillatory member fulcrumed to the upper end of said projection,
said oscillatory member havmg a segmental rack to mesh with said pinion and provided with an extension arm, an operating lever, apair of links connected together, the connected ends of said links being pivoted to said arm of the second shaft, one of said links connecting the arm of the second shaft to the extension arm, while the other link connects the operating lever to the arm of the second shaft, thereby constituting means for oscillating the oscillatory member and rotating the second shaft, which maintains a steady movement of said oscillatory member, and a member for guiding the oscillatory member.
2. In a washing machine, a support, a vertically disposed shaft mounted in said support, a pair of brackets mounted on the top of said support, and in one of which brackets said shaft is journaled, a second shaft journaled in said brackets, one end of which second shaft is provided with an arm, while the other end of the second shaft is provided with a gear, one of the brackets having a stud pin, a fly wheel loosely journaled on the stud pin and provided with a pinion meshing with said gear, one of said brackets having an upwardly extending projection, a segmental oscillatory member fulcrumed to the upper end of said projection and provided with a segmental rack having gear connections with the first shaft, said oscillatory member having an extension arm, an operating lever, a pair of links connected together, the connected ends of said links being pivoted to said arm of the second shaft, one of said links connecting the arm of the second shaft to the extension arm, while the other link connects the operating lever to the arm of the second shaft, thereby constituting means for oscillating the oscillatory member and rotating the second shaft, which maintains a steady movement of said oscillatory memher, a plate adjustably secured to the support and provided with lugs including guide notches for guiding the oscillatory member.
