To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, RoY W. CA'roHIno, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fairview, in the county of Dawson and State of Montana, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Dumping.
- Buckets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention .is an improvement in self dumping buckets and has for its object to provide a bucket of the character specified, especially adapted for use in concrete work, and wherein the bucket and the dumping doors are both connected with the hoisting cable, in such manner that while the bucket and its contents are suspended during the transportation or hoisting, the weight of the bucket and the material in the bucket will hold the dumping doors closed, the said doors being at such time directly connected with the hoisting mechanism, and wherein means is provided for clamping the bucket to the hoisting mechanism, after the bucket has-reached theplace of disposal and has been lowered to such place of disposal, to
cause the bucket to move relatively with respect to the dumping doors, whereby to dump the load.
' In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a side view i of the improved bucket with the dumping mechanism in section, and showing said' mechanism in dumping position, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the bucket in loading position, Fig. 3 is a side view of the latch mechanism, Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the latch plate, Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the support for the latch plate, and, Fig. 7 is a side view of the trip mechanism detached.
The present embodiment of the invention isshown in connection with a cylindrical bucket comprising a body 1 and sectional doors 2, the said doors being hinged to the body at the lower end thereof, and at dia metrically opposite points, as indicated at 3, and the said doors when in closed position have their inner straight edges abutting, as shown in Fig. 2.
.Each end of the bucket'is provided. with a reinforcing band 4, and the. hinges are secured to the lower band and to the body of the bucket.. The bucket. is provided with l i bails -5, the said bails being 3 in number,
and each bail is connected at its lower end to the upper end of the bucket, as indicated at 6, and. at its upper end to a sleeve or cas1ng,'as indicated at 7.
The casing 8 is hollow,
and the upper end f thereof is provided with an opening 9 for a purpose to be presently described, while the lower end is flaring or frusto-conical as indicated at 10. The lower end of the casing s closed by aplate or disk 11, provided at its center with anopening 12 registering 5 with the opening 9 of the casing, and at its periphery. with openings 13, for receiving threaded stems 14 depending from the lower end of the casing 8.. Nuts 15 are engaged with the stems, 'for holding the plate in 7 place, and a rod or cylindrical bar 16 passes through the 'registerlng openings 9 and 12, and extends above and below the said casing.
A latch plate is supported by the casing and the disk 11, the said plate being in the 5 form of a. disk 17, having a central openmg 18 registering with the openings 9 and '12, but of larger size than the said opening, epd the rod or bar 16 before mentioned passes through the said opening 18 of the so latch plate. The latchplate is also provided with a radial lug 19, and the said lug is received in an opening 20 at the lower end of the'casing 8, the said opening being a notch in the lower end of the portion 10 of 35 the said casing. The engagement of the ug with the opening 20 provides a hinged connection between the latch plate and the casing, and a coil spring 21 is arranged between the latchplateandthesupportingplate 11,the said spring acting normally to press the latch plate upward. The lower end of the spring is seated in a recess 22 in the upper face of the supporting plate 11, and
a spacing or limiting lug 23 is provided on the upper face of the said plate 11, for limiting the downward movement of the latch plate, with respect to the supporting plate 11. It will be noted that the spring 21 nor mally holds the latch plate in the position of Fig. 1, that is in a position to cause the sides of the opening 18 of the said latch plate to grip the periphery of the rod or bar 16, to prevent movement of the said bar with respect to the latch plate. The lug 23 limits the downward movement of the latch plate to a position approximately parallel with the upper face of the plate 11. The'lug 19 supports the hinged edge of the latch plate slightly above the upper face.v of the plate 11,, and the lug 23 is provided for supporting the opposite side.

each chain having one of its ends connected to an eye 32 on the inner face of the door,
and the other end of each of the chains 31 is connected to the lower end ofthe chain 30. It will be evident that when the rod or bar 16 is moved upwardly, the doors will :be closed, asshown in Fig. 2, and the doors are held in such position, by means of the chains.
A stop 33 is connected to the rod or bar 16 at its'lower end, the said stop being approximately" pear-shaped, and arranged I with 'its sma'll end upward. The vertical "rod 16 passes is flaring at its lower end,
epenin ea of the stop through which the as shown, and the stop is secured to the rod or bar'by means of a cross pin 35, in .such position that the flaring end of the opening is at the upper end of the chain 30. The upper end of the rod 16 is provided with a cross head 36, and the lifting rope 37 for the bucket is connected with an eye 38 on the rod or bar above the cross head. The end of the rope is passed through the eye, and a clamp 39 is utilized for securing the said end to the body of the rope. The ends of the cross head are provided with openings through which are passed eye-bolts 40, from below upward,
.and each bolt is engaged by a nut 41 above the cross head. C011 springs 42 are engaged at one end with the eye-bolts, and at the other with perforated lugs 43 which extend upward from enlargements 44 on'the flaring portion 10 of the casing 8. The springs normally hold the casing in elevated position, and also tend to hold the bucket in elevated position.
The improved bucket is especially designed for use with concrete or the like, and is so arranged that the dumping mechanism may be operated with a single line, and may be operated to dump under water or in the open air. without the services of an extra man, and with the single line. The said line is connected with the eye 2701 the lever 24. The dumping mechanism may be used in.

In operation, as for instance in concrete work, the bucket is first filled at the mixer.
,and after it has been filled, the operator operates the trip lever 24, and at the same time signals to the operator in charge of the hoisting mechanism to raise the bucket. The cable 37 as it is wound up draws up the rod or bar 16 and takes up any slack that there may be in the chains 30 and 31. The drawing up of the bar or rod 16 springs 24 under tension, and 1101 s the sections of the bottom tightly in place. The bucket can now be lowered to the place of disposal and may be set down on a supporting surface, so that the entire weight of the bucket is taken from the lifting cable. The cable 37 is now given more slack and the bar or rod 16 moves into the position of Fig. 1, the latch plate offering no resistance to the downward movement of the said rod or bar. The said latch plate, however, prevents upward movement of the bar, and to dump it is only necessary to again wind up the cable 37 The casing 810 is now clamped to the rod or bar 16, and the bucket is lifted, with the chains 30-31 slack, so that the contents of the bucket force the door sections open, and the said contents are dumped. The bucket may be returned to the filling position either open or shut, as may be desired.
I claim:
1. In combination with the bucket having an open bottom, and doors hinged to the side wall of the bucket for closing the bottom, said doors consisting of similar sections, a casing arranged above the bucket, bails connecting the casing to the bucket, said casing having a central vertical opening, a rod or bar slidable through the opening of the easing, chains connecting the lower end of the rod or bar to the sections of the door, for closing the said sections when the rod or bar is moved upward with respect to the casing, said rod or bar having means at its upper end for connection with a hoisting cable, a latch late within the casing and hinged at one side thereofand having a central opening through which the rod extends, a spring between the plate and the bottom of the easing and normally holding the said latch plate in inclined position with respect to the rod to cause the sides of the opening of the plate to grasp the rod, said casinghaving an opening in its side wall at the opposite side to the hinged connection of the latch plate, a trip lever pivoted in the opening and having a nose for engaging and depressing the latch plate into a position perpendicular to the axis of the bar or. rod, a stop in the .casing for limiting the downward movement of the latch plate, a stop on the lower end of the rod or bar for engaging laces the t the bottom of the casing to limit the upward movement of the said rod or bar, a cross its upper end and sides thereof, and a coil spring connecting each end of the said cross head with thef casing.
2. In-combination with the bucket having an. open bottom, and the doors hinged to the bucket for closing the bottom, a rod above the bucket having at its upper end means for connection with hoisting mechanism, flexible connections between the lower end of the rod and the doors, a sleeve slidable on the rod and rigidly connected with the bucket, a latch plate hinged to the sleeve and having an opening through which the rod passes, a spring normally holding the latch plate in inclined position with respect to the axis of the rod to cause the sides of the opening to gripthe rod to clamp the rod to the sleeve a lever pivoted to the sleeve and having a lateral lug for engaging the latch plate to move the sleeve into a position at right angles to the axis of the rod to release the rod when the lever is swung, a cross head rigid with the'upper end of the rod, and springs connecting the ends of the cross head with the sleeve and acting normally to draw the sleeve toward the upper end of the rod.

In combination with the bucket having an open bottom, and the doors hinged to the bucket for closing the bottom, a rod above the bucket having at its upper end means for connection with hoisting mechanism, flexible connections between the lower end of the rod and thd doors, a sleeve slidable on the rod and rigidly connected with the bucket, normally operative means for clamping the rod to the sleeve, trip mechanism for releasing the clamping mechanism, and a yielding connection between the rod and thesleeve for movin the sleeve toward the upper end of the r ROY W.
