To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE B. STEE- Bms, a citizen of the United states, residing at Wichita, in thecounty of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented new and use ful Improvements in ltailroad- Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rail-road ties,
and more particularly to that class of ties commonly known as metallic ties, with which are directly associated the rail fastene ing means or devices.
To this end the invention contemplates the provision of a simple and practical I'iLlL;
the tie in such a manner as to prevent lateral spreading thereof, as well as toprevent vertical vibratory movement of the rails during the passage of a trainthereupon, and eliminating to a great extent the necessity of employing numerous bolts and spikes for fastening the rails upon the tie.
With the above and various other objects in view my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 1 either direction.
designatesthe tie-body which is preferably tubular or hollow throughout its entire length, to permit of a wide range of adjustment for the rail-fastening means to be hereinafter fully described, and while the cross-sectional shape of the tie may be varied, the rectangular form, as illustrated, is preferred. The-upper face of the tubular or hollow tie-body is provided with a longitudinally extending'slot 2, within which the fastening means is slid during adjustment of the rails 3 upon the tie.
The means employed for fastening and retaining the rails'3 upon the tie in proper place comprises a rail-chair composed of two independent chair sections 4: and 5. The
section 4 is provided upon its upper and inner face with a flange 6, extending through out the length of the section and adapted to normally engage one face of the rail web and overlap the rail base upon one side thereof. A second flange or projection 7 is provided upon the lower inner face of the said section 4, extending parallel with the rail-engaging flange .6 just described; this flange 7, however, is adapted to fit within cut-out portions 8 provided upon the inner face of the other chair section 5. The lower portion 9 of the section 4, although formed integrally with the main portion, extends transversely thereto, and normally fits within the hollow of the tie body 1, the projections 10 of the portion 9 extending beneath the overlying edges of the said tie. By the above constructiom it will be seen that vertical as well as lateral movement of the chair independent of the tie is rendered impossible, and that adjustment of the said section may be varied as desired by simply sliding the same within the hollow tie. The other chair-section 5 is likewise provided with a rail-engaging flange 11, adapted to normally engage the opposite face of the rail 3 from that of the flange 6, thereby securely holding the rail against movement in The lower portion 12 of this section, however, does not extend transversely to the main portion, but comprises a hollow casing 13, adapted to entirely surround the tie 1, where it is held in place, after proper adjustment, through the medium of a transversely extending bolt 14, ex-
tending through openings 15 of the wall or casing 13, and other openings 16 of the tie, and fitting within a transverse slot 17 provided upon the underface ofthe lower portion 9 of the section 4, thereby materially assisting in the prevention of lateral or sliding movement of the same when properly adjusted and fastened.
A strip of material, preferably wood, is interposed between the two chair sections as at 18, upon which the rail 3 normally rests, thus producing a soft bed for the rail as well as preventing crystallization of the metal adjacent thereto. A cut-out portion 19 is formed within the said strip 18, which cut-out is adapted to receive the flange or projection 7 of the section 4. Lateral movement of the said stri is prevented by reason of its engagement with the side walls of the casing 13.
A second bolt 20, extending transversely to the first mentioned bolt 14, is employed for the purpose of fasteningthe two chair sections together, the said bolt extending throughout the length of the lower portion 9 'of the section 4, and through an opening 21 provided within a clamping member 22, disposed upon the outer face of thechair. The lower extremity 23 of the said member 22 is fitted within an opening or elongated aperture 24 of the tie, while the outer face of the said member is provided with a pair of oppositely disposed parallel vertically extending flanges 25, between which, and upon the outer face of the said member, is fitted a wooden plug 26, held in place through the medium of a washer member 27, provided with inwardly projecting flanges 28 adapted to engage the flanges 25 just described, thereby surrounding the said plug and protecting the same entirely. By the provision of this plug, a turning of the washer member independent of the clamp 22 is Prevented, as well as crystallization of the metal surrounding.
In assembling the various embodiments of my invention, perfect alinement of the rails is at all times insured, as the provision of the apertures 24 and the clamping members 22, will obviate the necessity of measuring the distance between the rails; the ties be ing of one uniform size, and the clamping sections being likewise constructed, absolute alinement of the rails is thus insured.
It will be seen from the above, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, that sliding movement of the chair is impossible by reason of the transversely extending bolt 14, and the clamping member 22; that lateral and vertical movement of the chair independent of the tie is also rendered impossible by reason of the novel and peculiar construction of the tie; and that the laying of rails is simplified to a great extent by reason of the fact that a measuring of the distance between the rails is obviated, as above set forth. 7
Attention is also called to the fact that the provision of the casing beneath the tie will materially assist in preventing movement of the same in any direction; and that the cooperation of the two chair sections is such as to produce a secure fastening of the rails upon the tie. 7
It is thought from the foregoing that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily comprehended.
I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the specific construction of the device as herein disclosed as certain minor changes and variations may be made upon practical application of the invention without departing from the spirit thereof, provided however, such changes or variations fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
' Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a rail-road tie comprising a tubular body having a longitudinal slot upon one face thereof, of a rail chair composed of two independent sections, a lower portion formed integrally with one of said sections adapted to extend transversely to the upper portion of said section, the said lower portion adapted to fit within the hollow of said tie, a lower portion formed integral with the other of said sections adapted to surround the said tie, means carried by said section for fastening the rail in place thereupon and means for fastening said chair upon the tie.
2.1n combination with a rail-road tie comprising a tubular body having a longitudinal slot upon one face thereof, of a rail chair composed of two independent sections, a lower portion formed integrally with and extending transversely to the upper portion of one of said chair sections, said lower portion adapted to fit within the hollow' of said tie, means carried by the upper portion of said chair section adapted to engage one face of the rail, a lower portion formed integrally with the other of said chair sections adapted to surround the said tie, means carried by the upper portion of the said other section adapted to engage the opposite face of the rail, and a pair of transversely extending bolts carried by the said chair sections for fastening said sections upon the tie.
3. In combination with a rail-road tie composed of a tubular body having a longitudinal slot upon one face thereof and an opening in the base thereof, of a rail chair composed of two independent chair sections, a lower portion formed integrally with and extending transversely to the upper portion of one of said chair sections, said lower portion adapted to fit within the hollow of said tie, a flange formed integral with the upper portion of said chair section adapted to engage one face of the rail, a second flange formed integral with the said upper portion and parallel with the said first mentioned flange adapted to engage cut out portions formed within the other of said sections, a lower portion formed integrally with the upper portion of the other of the said chair sections adapted to surround the said tie, the said upper portion having a flange formed integrally therewith adapted to engage the opposite face of the said rail, the two rail engaging flanges adapted to fasten the rail in place upon the chair and means including a clamping member extending through the said elongated aperture and engaging one of said chair sections for fastening the chair in proper place upon the tie.

In combination with a rail-road tie comprising a tubular body having a longitudinal slot upon one face thereof, an elongated aperture in the base thereof, of a rail chair composed of two independent chair sections, a lower portion formed integrally with and extending transversely to the upper portion of oneof said chair sections, the said lower portion slidably mounted within the hollow of said tie and extending through a longitudinal slotupon the top face thereof, a flange formed integral with the upper portion of said chair section adapted to engage one face of the rail, the extremities of the said upper portion adapted to rest upon the upper face of the tie, a second flange formed integral with the said upper portion and extending parallel to the said first mentioned flange, the said second mentioned flange adapted to fit within cut out portions formed within the lower portion of the other chair.

In combination with a rail-road tie comprising a tubular body having a longitudinal slot upon one face thereof and an elongated aperture within the base thereof, of a rail chair composed of two independent chair sections, a lower portion formed integrally with the upper portion of one of said sections, said lower portion having an opening formed therein through which the said tie extends, said lower portion being further provided with cut out portions upon one face thereof, a flange formed integrally with the upper portion of said chair section adapted to engage one face of the rail, a lower portion formed integrally with and extendin transversely to the upper portion of the other of said chair sections, the said lower portion of the other chair section adapted to fit within the hollow of said tie through the opening within the said first mentioned lower portion, a flange formed integrally with the upper portion of said second mentioned chair section adapted to engage the opposite face of the said rail, the said two rail engaging flanges adapted to fasten the rail in place upon the chair, a second'flange formed integral with the upper portion of said second mentioned chair section extending parallel with the said rail engaging flange, the said second mentioned flange adapted to fit within the said cutout portions of the lower portion of the said first mentioned chair section, a clamping member disposed upon one face of said chair, the lower extremity of the said member adapted to fit within the said elongated aperture whereby movement of the chair is limited, vertically extending flanges formed integrally with and upon one face of said clamping member, a washer member provided with vertically extending flanges adapted to engage the flanges of the said clamping member, a plug interposed between the said clamping member and the said washer member whereby rotation of one member independent of the other is prevented, and means including a pair of trans versely extending bolts, carried by the said chair for'fastening the same upon the tie, as and for the purpose set forth.
