RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 4, 1913.
Application filed March 29, 1913. Serial No. 757,555.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILES H. STONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rail fasteners, and the objects of my invention are to provide simple and effective means for connecting the confronting or abutting ends of rails Without resorting to the use of splice bars, bolts and nuts, and to furnish the sides of rails with fastening members that permit of said rails being easily and quickly connected together.
Further objects of my invention are to provide rail fasteners that will prevent lateral and vertical displacement of one rail relatively to another, and to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is strong, durable and easy to install.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a rail joint provided with the fasteners, Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a detached fastener member.
Rail fasteners in accordance with my invention comprise upper members 1 and lower members 2 that are made of resilient or malleable metal, secured to the sides of the rails and interlocked to prevent lateral and vertical displacement of said rails. The members 1 and 2 are practically identical in construction, but the members 1 are arranged the reverse of the members 2, as shown in Fig. l. The upper members 1 have the inner ends thereof riveted or otherwise connected, as at 3 to the web 4 of a rail 5. The inner ends of the members are located directly beneath the heads 6 of said rail and the outer ends of said members gradually taper, as at 7 and terminate in angle heads 8. The outer ends of the members are provided with transverse grooves 9 and the heads thereof with transverse ribs 9 to interlock with similar heads 10 of the '15 are employed,
To facilitate placing the members 1 and 2 I together or separating the same, the members 1 have the upper edges thereof, adjacent to the heads 8, provided with sockets 14: in which can be inserted the end of a crowbar or other instrument used in prying the members outwardly until they are free of the lower members, thereby permitting of the rails 5 and 13 being separated.
There is suiiicient play between the heads 8 and 10 to permit of the heads 8 being shifted relatively to the heads 10 and these two heads cooperate in supporting the heads of the rails 5 and 13, thereby providing a tread for rolling stock.
T o brace the interlocked ends of heads 8 and 10 of the members 1 and 2, angle braces these braces having straight walls engaging the outer sides of the heads 8 and 10 and tie plates 16 that are notched, as at 17 whereby the braces can be spiked or otherwise connected to a'tie.
It is to be understood that my invention is susceptible of such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In a rail fastener for rail joints, the combination with rails, of upper resilient fastening members secured to the sides of the web of one of said rails, grooved and ribbed heads carried by the outer ends of said members, said members having sockets formed in the upper edges thereof, lower members secured to the sides of the web of the other rail, and grooved and ribbed heads carried by the outer ends thereof and adapted to be engaged by the heads of said upper mem bers to prevent longitudinal and vertical displacement of said rails.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GILES H. STONES.
