J. L. KLAVN. CAR RBPLAGER. APPLICATION FILED JULY 12, 191s.

Josnrn If.. KLAvoN, or sncxso'mirronivenn;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July l2, 1913.` Serial No. 778,809.
To 'all 'whom z'z may con-cem.'
Be it lmownthat I, JOSEPH L. Kurven, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of ltlichignn,` have invented a new and useful Car-Replacer; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such 'as will en-v it apthe present device only the rib has to be renewed, thereby lessening the expense.
In practical fields 1t may be found necessary to subject the details of construction to alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is`clain1ed.
1 The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view 0f a portion of a railroad showing the improved car replacer as applied. Fig.l 2 is a gated rib 6 is constructed. Each i transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig is a detail perspective View of one of the frogs. Fig. 4 is a sectional View Von the -line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the renewable rib.. Fig. 6 is a detail View of the frog. Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 7 7 of Fig. 3. Fig. 8 is a sectional view on the line 8-8 of Fig. l. Fig; 9 is a sectional view on the line 9-9 of Fig. 6. 1 Y
Referring more particularly to the drawings, l designates the rails while 2 denotes the ties, Whereas 3 and 4 denote the repleteing frogs. Each frog is hollowed out upon its underface, as shown at 5, and upon its upper face adjoining one of its sides (which is arranged at an angle to the rail an elonogvis inclinedupwardly from the ties and toward the upper surface of the tread of the rail,
so as to elevate the car wheels 'toward andupon the tread ofthe rail, the rib 6 acting to lguide the wheel toward the `rail. The rib ti of the frog 3 isv rovided with a suppleinentnl rib 8, Whic in side elevation, has its upper portion arranged at an obtuse angle to the uplpei'ffaceof the 4rib 6.. This supplemental ri at one end'is provided with an abrupt incline 9 inclining down toward the tread of the rail.` As a carl wheel rides thev supplemental rib toits highest point, the same then contacts with rail, 'so that the 'flange of the whegel will assume its proper position relativeto the lrail, while the other car wheel is uided This supplemental rib 8 is renewable, owing to the samebeing dove-tailed into the fla-nge 6 of the frog 3, as shown at 12. By means ofthis dove-tailed connection l2 an old supplemental rib 8 may be removed and a new one plaeed in position, thereby renewing the structure of the frog 3. Pivote'd in a recess of the under face of each frog adjacent the side, which recess is denoted by the numeral 13, is vav bar 14, which is provided with a base of the rail, thereby holding the frog in position.
The frog 4`is provided with a bulge 16, between which and t-he rib 6 a gully 18 is wheel; Adjacent the bulge 16, the bottom of the gully 18 begins to incline downwardly and ends below the surface of the tread ofthe rail, as shown clearly in Figs.
will come in contact with tread of the rail. As the ange of the Wheel is moving in the ully 18, the tread of the wheel engages thevulge 16. The end 17, of the ribG of the fro 4, iss'paced apart from the side of the tread of the rail, as shown.
The invention having'beenl set forth, what is clairned as newand useful is l. In a car'or engine replacer, anouter clined upwardly towardthe tread of a rail the angeof a car wheel so as to' guide'the ratenteunwa, reis.
